10/2020 Denkmal des Monats: Jüterbog
Am 30. Oktober war die AG Historische Stadtkerne in Jüterbog zu Gast, um das Torwächterhaus am Dammtorturm als Denkmal des Monats auszuzeichnen. Bei Regen und guter Laune freuten wir uns, dass die Veranstaltung trotz Corona doch noch im kleinen Rahmen stattfinden konnte.
Das Torwächterhaus diente dem Torwächter als Unterkunft, der das Tor öffnete und schloss und für die Erhebung des Geleitzolls verantwortlich war. Seit 1939 ist es im Besitz der Kirche und beherbergt heute eine offene Jugend-Begegnungsstätte.

Happiness is ... sang Hanne Krogh in 1971. It's not the big thing. I enjoy traveling and meeting new, strange people is great. In Germany they must be above average nice. In a small town, Schweinrich, on my way to my first overnight stay, northwest of Berlin, I stopped when I saw a picnic table by the road. Neighbors were out and saw me. They asked if I wanted a cup of coffee. Of course I answered yes please. Five minutes later they came with a tray of both coffee and cakes! Makan to people. Got a good insight into their lives. They were both 58 years old and two years ago a tumor was discovered in the wife's head. She was now completely dependent on help. Was at a day center when the man was at work. For the rest of the day he was in charge of the wife. He was tired. But as he said: So is the living. He just had to make it! Many of us have a lot to be grateful for.

Travel oldest cities in Europe. Monschau in Autumn, Germany.
The small old town Monschau is located in the west of Germany, on the border with Belgium. The city is located on the banks of the Rur River, in the Eifel mountains. The town has not changed the last 3-4 centuries and is mostly built traditional timber framing houses, which attracts large number of tourists. In the town a lot of souvenir shops and shops with food of the Eifel region. The little old town of Monschau especially attracts photographers in autumn.

In 1675, the Battle of Fehrbellin was fought there, in which the troops of Brandenburg-Prussia defeated those of the occupying Swedish Empire. In 1758 during the Seven Years' War Prussian and Swedish forces clashed at the Battle of Fehrbellin (1758). One of the most important skydiving dropzones of Germany is located at the local airport. By area, Fehrbellin is the second-largest rural municipality (Gemeinde) in Germany, trailing only Nuthe-Urstromtal. The Hakenberg Victory Column is a 36 metre tall monument with an observation deck at Hakenberg near Fehrbellin in Brandenburg, Germany. It was designed by Christian Daniel Rauch and built between 1875 and 1879. It commemorates the victory of Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg, over the troops of occupying Sweden in the Battle of Fehrbellin (1675).
I am starting this walk at the Town Hall (Rathaus), then follow an simple route to the Evangelic Church of Fehrbellin. I will then drive towards the Hakenberg Victory Column where I end my walk.

Visiting Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp - E3 - Three Days in Berlin
Sachsenhausen concentration camp was a Nazi camp in the town of Oranienburg just outside of Berlin. It operated between 1936 and 1945, sadly 200,000 people were imprisoned there and 30,000 killed. On our last day in Germany we took a tour of what is now the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum to learn more about the horrific crimes that took place there.
