Some of the best attractions to see in Minnesota and Wisconsin on the Great River Road Trip are The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, The Glensheen Historic Estate, and Jay Cooke State Park in Minnesota. The Lower Wisconsin Riverway, The Taliesin Estate, and The National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Wisconsin.
The Great River Road Trip was one of the United States’ first scenic byways. Starting in 1931, it wound along the Mississippi River from New Orleans to St. Paul and on up to Lake Superior.
The idea for this trip came from a man named Horace King who wanted to create an American equivalent of the famous European driving tour known as The Grand Tour. He thought that following America’s longest river would be perfect for such a trip but had no way of knowing what people might expect or enjoy seeing along the way. He turned to his friend John Nolen and asked him if he would come up with some suggestions for places that could be added to make it into a true scenic byway, like those found in Europe. Today it is a famous place for scenic road trips.

Lost Creek Falls. A 15-foot drop within the Lost Creek located in Cornucopia, WI. One of the only waterfalls in Wisconsin that gives you the option to walk behind/underneath it. [46.834185N 91.12056W]
LaSalle Falls. A 20-foot drop within the Pine River, located in Florence, WI. This waterfall has about a half mile of rapids that run into the gorge at the bottom. Waterfalls like this that are longer than they are tall are called “slide falls” and this one you can even take a kayak down. [45.8312N 88.29W]
Parfrey’s Glen. Located in Merrimac, WI and Wisconsin’s first State Natural Area, created in 1952. The glen is a deep gorge cut through the sandstone of the south flank of the Baraboo Hills, and is the most visited state natural area as a part of Devil’s Lake State Park. Some of the waterfalls form the border between Wisconsin and Michigan, such as Superior Falls and Peterson Falls, while others wind their way through spectacular gorges such as Piers Gorge, Brownstone Falls, and Lasalle Falls.
