Aussies flock to Longreach in central Queensland to encounter some of the greatest legends of the outback. Located in the vast heart of the state (13 hours’ drive from Brisbane or seven hours from Rockhampton) Longreach has forged a place for itself in Australian folklore, thanks largely to the presence of the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Qantas Founders Museum.
In this episode of our YouTube travel series, we bring you tips for ten top things to do Longreach and Winton. While they’re almost two hundred kilometres apart, Longreach and Winton are often done as a duo by visitors to the region. Winton is the smaller of the two, but offers plenty to see and do in its own right.

While there have been various discoveries of dinosaur bones and tracks in Australia over the past century, a more complete picture of our once mighty megafauna is only now beginning to emerge. Much of it centres around the ‘Winton Formation’ of sedimentary rock in Queensland, which is yielding incredible evidence of the prehistoric past.
At the forefront of that research is the Australian Age of Dinosaurs, which sits on a rocky plateau known as a ‘jump-up’, a few kilometres east of the outback town of Winton. Established by David and Judy Elliott following the discovery of a giant femur from a sauropod in one of their paddocks, this impressive not-for-profit facility now holds the largest collection of fossilised Australian dinosaur remains in the world.
In this video we catch up with education co-ordinator Grace Elliott to learn more about what visitors to the museum can expect.

This episode we travel over 400km from Mary Kathleen to Winton, in the heart of Outback Queensland. This town is awesome with so much on offer for every style of traveller and is one of the safest and welcoming towns we have visited during our travels! We set up camp at the local’s favourite off grid waterhole just on the outskirts of town, and share our top experiences and must do’s when visiting this vibrant outback town.
Our top picks include the Australian Age of Dinosaurs, the Lark Quarry Dinosaur Stampede with Red Dirt Tours, the world class Waltzing Matilda Centre, and the quirky Musical Fence.
And with 4 pubs on the main street including the famous North Gregory Hotel and the quintessential Australian, there are plenty of great options when grabbing a meal or drink during happy hours.
Our epic road trip from South East Queensland to the incredible Red Centre – Uluru and Kata Tjuta – the beating heart of Central Australia, is underway!

Number 5. Hanging Rock State Park
Hanging Rock State Park is one of the best state parks in North Carolina! There are 9,000 acres of natural wonderland near the city full of diverse terrains. It’s one of the most fun things to do in Winston-Salem (though it’s a 40-minute drive from the city).
There are 20 miles of trails traversing steep climbs to stunning views, flowing streams, and waterfalls, the Dan River for paddling, and a sparkling lake for swimming and canoeing. There are opportunities to rock climb or mountain bike within the grounds. It is one of the best things to do in Winston-Salem for outdoor activity enthusiasts.
Number 4. Black Mountain Chocolate Factory
As close to a trip to Willy Wonka’s as you might ever get, this chocolate factory tour at Black Mountain Chocolate is sweet as can be. It’s open to the public for a self-guided tour that tastes as good as it smells. If you take a guided tour, you are sure to learn a lot about chocolate and the intensive process behind creating it.
You can buy all the treats you want to try at the end, and they have everything from hot chocolate to gelato to pastries. They even offer classes where you can learn to make cocktails or pair chocolates with wines.
Number 3. Broad Branch Distillery
Set in a former tobacco warehouse in the Arts District, a visit to Broad Branch is a fun and indulgent experience and one of the best things to do in Winston-Salem.
The distillery is grain to glass, focusing on old-world artisanal techniques of the area. You can sneak a peek at their technical and thoughtful process behind the scenes and treat yourself to a tasting as well.
They create a variety of delicious whiskeys and rums using fresh and local ingredients. The Sungazer Tropical Transcendence Rum is a revelation, along with the Smashing Violet NC Infusion Whiskey.
Number 2. Graylyn Estate
Graylyn is one of the largest private homes in the whole state. Visitors can enjoy a romantic weekend in North Carolina in this private estate. Mr. and Mrs. Bowman Gray built it in the 1930s. It’s currently an opulent hotel offering the most refined luxury in town. They host many events, including a tour of the estate and tastings of their house wines.
It’s in a Norman Revival style on 85 acres of vast and verdant grounds. Each room is extraordinary, with its unique decor for the ultimate individualized experience.
If you can’t stay overnight, consider coming for one of their regular Tour Pour du Jour events, which includes a tour of the property and a sampling of Graylyn’s house wines. Fair warning: these monthly events are popular and often sell out in advance.
Number 1. Salem Lake
Often called the hidden diamond of Winston-Salem, you’d never know this oasis was tucked away right in the heart of the city. Salem Lake Trail circumnavigates the sparkling body of water for a delightful seven-mile hike with a constant view.
It is a fantastic lake in North Carolina to visit. Pier fishing is a popular pastime here; try your hand at angling or watch for the catch of the day. The paths are easy to walk, and there are plenty of boating opportunities out on the water as well.

National Road Trip Day became an official holiday in 2019, thanks to Pilot Flying J, the largest travel center operator in North America. They chose the Friday before Memorial Day because of the long weekend ahead and, with May being the start of summer, it kickstarts the travel season, too. Since travel stories are ingrained into the very history of America, with wagon trains heading out West in the 1840s — it makes sense to observe a day that celebrates travel by road.

It was way back in 1753 that a twenty year old George Washington was entrusted with an important letter telling the French that they must leave the settlements along the Ohio River. Washington rode over 1000 miles on horseback, then walked the last 60 miles. This probably makes this the first road trip in American history.
Washington almost lost his life on two different occasions. Once an Indian shot at him at close range and narrowly missed. Later, he fell into the freezing water of the Allegheny River while trying to cross it on a makeshift log raft. Washington saved himself from drowning by throwing an arm across the raft.
The first successful North American transcontinental trip by automobile took place in 1903 and was piloted by H. Nelson Jackson and Sewall K. Crocker, accompanied by a dog named Bud. The trip was completed using a 1903 Winton Touring Car, dubbed Vermont by Jackson. The trip took a total of 63 days between San Francisco and New York, costing $8,000. The total cost included items such as food, gasoline, lodging, tires, parts, other supplies, and the cost of the Winton.
The first woman to cross the American landscape by car was Alice Huyler Ramsey with three female passengers in 1909. Ramsey left from Hell's Gate in Manhattan, New York and traveled 59 days to San Francisco, California.
Motorists ventured cross-country for holiday as well as migrating to California and other locations. The modern American road trip began to take shape in the late 1930s and into the 1940s, ushering in an era of a nation on the move.
The 1950s saw the rapid growth of ownership of automobiles by American families. The automobile, now a trusted mode of transportation, was being widely used for not only commuting but leisure trips as well. Travelers from Europe countries, Australia, and elsewhere soon came to the US to take part in the American ideal of a road trip.
