ABOUT US
We are Jed and Sandy Hall, the creators of Wanderful Revolution. Jed was born in a small town on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Sandy was born and raised in Maryland. We met in Washington State, while serving our country in the United States Navy. After separating from military service, we both went back to school and became nurses, which ultimately led to us selling our home in 2015 and hitting the road as travel nurses working in Emergency Departments throughout the USA.

During our travels, we lived in an Airstream travel trailer and made it our goal to become debt free. At the beginning of 2020, we paid off the last of our debts and quit our jobs so we could follow our long time dream of traveling the world. Of course, COVID-19 brought us to a screeching halt. So, we decided to build out a 2019 Mercedes Sprinter van, which we plan to drive on one of the longest road trips in the world: the Pan-American highway from Alaska to the tip Argentina (and possibly beyond).

We are excited and very fortunate to be able to live this amazing lifestyle! So, we want to share it with you! Join us to check out some amazing places, go on exciting adventures, eat delicious food, and perhaps learn some tips and tricks about living full-time in a van. We hope you will join us on our Wanderful Revolution! We will see you out there and we hope we inspire you to STAY WANDERFUL!!

Arizona Road Trips: Route 66 - Ep. 2

We continue our trip through Arizona's Route 66, this time traveling from Winslow to Holbrook, Arizona.

Stand on the corner in Winslow, Arizona, and snap a shot of that iconic road sign. Then, follow along as we meet two Harvey Girls, at La Posada, who share the history of the original Harvey Girls of the 1880s and how they helped build the West. Thirty-three miles (or about 40 minutes) east, with little fanfare and lots of dedication, Atsuo Sakurai makes some of the best sake outside of Japan in the small town of Holbrook. Don't believe us? Arizona Sake, Sakurai's brand, was awarded the title World's Best Sake Made Outside Japan at Tokyo's Sake Competition in 2018.

Winslow, Arizona

Today we traveled to a couple of places on Historic Route 66 that some of you might of heard of. One was the Wigwam Motel where each room is a large Wigwam, or Teepee, and the animated movie Cars was influenced by. We then traveled to Winslow, AZ to 'stand on the corner' famous by the 1970's song 'Take it Easy' by the Eagles (I actually had this song in my video but YouTube made me remove it!), as well as visit Winslow's 911 Memorial! While there we also visited the La Posada motel and its unique 'train stop' heritage!

Our next installment of the Cactus Atlas Camping Guide brings us to Homolovi State Park Campground located in Winslow, Arizona. In our guide, we show our site, explore some of the other sites with electrical hookups, and check out the facilities. Later on, we walk to the Visitor Center, ponder time around an old Mormon cemetery, stand on a corner in Winslow and check out the fireworks show for Independence Day.

Homolovi State Park Campground is a great place to stop and temporarily call home if you're traveling along I-40 in an RV or are exploring a lot of the nearby destinations. The campground is conveniently located inside Homolovi State Park just off I-40 and a short distance away from popular attractions such as Petrified Forest National Park, Meteor Crater, Homolovi State Park, Winslow, and more.

The campground has 53 campsites capable of accommodating RVs of different lengths and needs. At the time of filming (July 2020) the following site info was valid:

Non-Electric campsites: 7, 14, 16, 35, 40-42, 44, 46
30/50 Amp campsites: 5, 12, 20, 24, 28, 33, 39, 43, 47, 52
(all sites not listed above are 30 Amp sites)
ADA Accessible campsites: 8, 10, 12, 24, 38, 52, 53
Campsites with tent pads: 6-10, 13, 14, 16, 21, 26, 27, 30, 38-42, 44, 46, 49, 51

Campsites are well spaced apart so privacy is plentiful at the campground.

Facilities include restrooms with flushing toilets and showers with hot water. Accessible stalls and showers are available.

A dump station is located at the front of the campground and is available for registered guests. Non-campers will need to pay a $15 fee.

A 1.2-mile trail leads from the campground to the Visitor Center. Within the Visitor Center are a gift shop and museum exhibiting pottery and artifacts of the ancient people of Homolovi.

Five other trails within the park provide plenty of hiking opportunities. Numerous species of birds call this area home and bird watching is a common activity.

There aren't many restaurants downtown other than eating at the hotel, we had dinner at Olde Towne Grill and it was amazing and you should try it if you're in the area; cheaper than the hotel restaurant for sure!

The 9/11 Memorial was a surprise for us and we felt honored to visit it.
You can learn more about Winslow's memorial here

La Posada Hotel embodies the visions of both Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, the hotel’s renowned architect, and Allan Affeldt, its current owner. But the story really begins with Fred Harvey, who “civilized the west” by introducing linen, silverware, china, crystal, and impeccable service to railroad travel. (He was so legendary that MGM made a movie called The Harvey Girls starring Judy Garland.) Harvey developed and ran all the hotels and restaurants of the Santa Fe Railway, eventually controlling a hospitality empire that spanned the continent.

La Posada opened May 15, 1930, just after the stock market crash of 1929, and remained open for just 27 years. In 1957, the hotel closed to the public. The museum-quality furnishings were auctioned off in 1959. In the early 1960s, much of the building was gutted and transformed into offices for the Santa Fe Railway. Several times over the ensuing 40 years, the building was nearly demolished, as recently as 1994 when the railway announced its plans to move out for good.

Allan Affeldt purchased it from the Santa Fe Railway after learning that the property was in danger. He visited the hotel in 1994 and decided to help local preservationists save it. This daunting task entailed negotiating for 3 years with the railroad and resolving various legal, environmental, and financial obstacles. He established La Posada LLC to take on the enormous risk and complexity of the estimated $12 million restorations. Allan and his wife Tina Mion moved in on April 1, 1997. Daniel Lutzick became the third partner and General Manager.
(history and information are taken from the La Posada website

The Meteor Crater was a fascinating spot and the exhibits were well put together and informative. However, we felt the $24 entrance fee plus $14 to hire the pet ramada was a little high for what it was. It doesn't take more than thirty minutes to visit the crater. Although this is a National Landmark it is and always has been on private land.

The Homolovi State Park was a fabulous place to base ourselves while we explored. “Homolovi” is Hopi for “Place of the Little Hills” — the traditional name for Winslow, Arizona.

Homolovi State Park now serves as a center of research for the late migration period of the Hopi from the 1200s to the late 1300s. While archaeologists study the sites and confer with the Hopi to unravel the history of Homolovi, Arizona State Parks provides the opportunity for visitors to visit the sites and use park facilities including a visitor center and museum, various trails and a campground. Several covered picnic tables are located throughout the park. Pullouts provide the opportunity to observe wildlife in this park of over 4,000 acres at an elevation of 4,900 feet.

There are 53 sites at the campground, some of which have full hookups

Santa Fe To Winslow Arizona - Route 66 Quick Vlog From The Road Part 10

The longest days drive of our Route 66 trip from Santa Fe New Mexico the famous La Posada Hotel in Winslow Arizona.

On the way we stopped at another famous hotel, El Rancho in Gallup New Mexico. This was where all the film stars stayed when they were filming westerns including Ronald Reagan, Burt Lancaster and of course, John Wayne. They have signed photographs all over the walls.

After Gallup we crossed the border into Arizona and visited the Petrified Forest National Park and to see the Painted Desert. Thousands of ancient trees which soaked up the silica become quartz of the years leaving these rock trees which litter the desert. There is also a monument to the Old Route 66 which ran through the park.

After the national park it was back on to Route 66 to the Holbrook Wigwam Motel and then onto the famous ‘Here It Is’ sign at the Jack Rabbit Trading Post.

We finally got to Winslow and La Posada Hotel, one of the best hotels on Route 66.

Tomorrow we take a side trip to Sedona, Arizona.
