This industrial city in West Flanders came through a revival in the 19th century with the completion of the Roeselare-Leie Canal.
In the decades that followed, Roeselare would be described as the Manchester of Belgium, and has a port on the canal still bustling with activity.
In 1875 a young Albrecht Rodenbach, who later became an important poet, led a protest against the use of French in education at the city’s Klein Seminarie (minor seminary), spearheading the Flemish Groote Stooringe student revolt.
This was a big step in the “Dutchization” of Flemish secondary education.

Bruges is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium, in the northwest of the country.
The area of the whole city amounts to more than 13,840 hectares, including 1,075 hectares off the coast, at Zeebrugge. The historic city centre is a prominent World Heritage Site of UNESCO. It is oval-shaped and about 430 hectares in size.
Along with a few other canal-based northern cities, such as Amsterdam and Stockholm, it is sometimes referred to as The Venice of the North. Bruges has a significant economic importance thanks to its port and was once the chief commercial city in the world. Bruges is well known as the seat of the College of Europe, an elite university institute for European studies regarded as the EU's very own Oxbridge.
Bruges became important due to the tidal inlet that was important to local commerce. This inlet was then known as the Golden Inlet. Bruges received its city charter on 27 July 1128, and new walls and canals were built. Since about 1050, gradual silting had caused the city to lose its direct access to the sea. A storm in 1134, however, re-established this access, through the creation of a natural channel at the Zwin. The new sea arm stretched all the way to Damme, a city that became the commercial outpost for Bruges.

Without a doubt, Belgium's most beautiful track known to man. Incredibly divers and beautiful landscapes, very low traffic, good skating asphalt (most of the time), interesting sight-seeing possibilities along the way ...
This track lead me from the monastery of Munsterbilzen where I visited my aunt to seek her help in asking our Lord for a miracle to the cosy city square in Genk where I enjoyed a musical evening, Jamfred teamed up with legendary architect/drummer Vittorio Simoni.
It was hard and my muscled were cramped up due to reuma. I fell flat on my chest when a small wig blocked the wheel of my left skate. But I enjoyed it nevertheless. Because I felt that the lord was with me and I only had to believe in him. Only a few days later, my miracle happened. Thank you sir.
You can find the track here if you would like to follow in my footsteps. Mind you, it's not a round track but an A to B trip! You can cutoff or prolong it to end up where you started if you'd wish so.

As I was walking up the hill from the bus in Karlskrona, the sky turned black and lightning and thunder started, followed by extremely heavy hail and rain. And this was in June (summer). Incredible.
