Places to see in ( Whitehaven - UK )

Whitehaven is a town and port on the coast of Cumbria, England. Historically a part of Cumberland, Whitehaven lies equidistant between Cumbria's two largest settlements, Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness, and is served by the Cumbrian Coast Line and the A595 road. Whitehaven is the administrative centre of the Borough of Copeland and an unparished area.

Located on the west coast of the county, outside the Lake District National Park, Whitehaven includes a number of former villages, estates and suburbs, such as Mirehouse, Woodhouse, Kells and Hensingham. The major industry is the nearby Sellafield nuclear complex, with which a large proportion of the population has links.

Whitehaven was, with Falmouth, the first post medieval foundation in England. It is the most complete example of planned Georgian architecture in Europe and recently has been pursuing growth through tourism. Whitehaven's planned layout was with streets in a right-angled grid. James Robinson is officially credited as the original architect but some (including Alex James) contest the claim.

Whitehaven has a rich railway history. It used to be a terminus of the Furness Railway, and still has two railway stations, Whitehaven (Bransty) and Corkickle, both on the Cumbrian Coast Line, which runs from Carlisle to Barrow-in-Furness. The harbour was once riddled with railway lines, when steam engines would shunt trucks full of coal, iron, gypsum and many other cargoes onto the quays for ships to take elsewhere in the world. The railway reached Whitehaven in 1847 – steam powered engines finally reached the town following an agreement between the Earl of Lonsdale and George Stephenson.

Whitehaven has also played host to a Maritime festival, which started in 1999 and was held every two years, and now annually, the last being in 2013, attracting an estimated 350,000 people to the small town. The existence of a harbour or landing place at Whitehaven can be traced back to the early 16th century when quay-dues – otherwise known as wharfage – were recorded in 1517. Also in 1677 an historical description of Whitehaven refers to “a little pier, in shallow water, built with some wooden piles and stones”. So, there was probably a man-made harbour structure at Whitehaven before the Lowthers started to develop the area.

( Whitehaven - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Whitehaven . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Whitehaven - UK

Beauty of Cumbria, Whitehaven Beach | 4K Virtual Tour

In Georgian times the settlement of Whitehaven was a bustling hub of mining and shipping. Salt and coal were exported from the town’s harbour and rum and tobacco came into the country here. These industries are now long gone, but there is much in the area to remind visitors of the town’s past.

The small sand and pebble beach curves around the bay. The area is quite popular with sea-anglers and fossils are sometimes found amongst the shingle on the shore line. Just behind the beach lies the town, with its Georgian buildings, shops, places to eat and parking.
At the southern end of the beach there is a breakwater and the historic harbour of Whitehaven, which dates back to 1633. The chimney of Wellington Pits towers majestically over the harbour. There are also some interesting museums in the area, telling the story of Whitehaven’s industrial past. The Beacon Museum is dedicated to telling visitors about local history. The Rum Story visitor centre is set in an original 18th century building and brings the history of rum vividly to life.
From the beach it is possible to take an exhilarating cliff-top walk along the coast to St Bees Head and beyond to the RSPB Reserve. Look out for terns, guillemots and even puffins along the way. From the cliffs, on a clear day there are views over to the hills of Dumfries and Galloway to the north and over to the Isle of Man.

Whitehaven Walk: Town Centre & Harbour【4K】

Located on the west coast of Cumbria (although historically in Cumberland), and around 35 miles southwest of Carlisle, is the town of Whitehaven.

From around 1120 the Priory of St Bees owned the small fishing village of Whitehaven, up until the priory's closure in 1539 as part of Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. In 1630 the merchant Christopher Lowther purchased the monasterial estate and began to transform Whitehaven into a port town.

In 1634 the first quay was built, which was originally used for the export of salt and coal to Ireland. Christopher Lowther's son John acquired a market charter for Whitehaven in 1660. A phase of urban expansion began in the 1680s when the rectangular grid of streets that makes up the town today was first laid out.

By the beginning of the 18th century, Whitehaven was importing large quantities of tobacco from Virginia and Maryland in exchange for manufactured goods. To keep up with trade, a second quay was built. It is claimed that, by the mid 18th century, Whitehaven had the deepest coal mines in the world, and was the second busiest port of England by tonnage behind London.

In 1778 the last invasion of England occurred when Scottish-born U.S. navy commander John Paul Jones raided Whitehaven. He knew the town well since he had started his career as an apprentice here at the age of thirteen. During the raid, Jones began to set fire to the wooden ships in the harbour. A fire alert was sounded and large numbers of people came running to the quay where they forced the Americans to retreat, and managed to extinguish the flames.

In 1847 the railway arrived in Whitehaven. The station was opened by the Whitehaven Junction Railway as the terminus of their line from Maryport. Today it is situated on the Cumbrian Coast Line which runs from Carlisle to Barrow-in-Furness.

The coming of the railways effectively brought about Whitehaven's decline as a port since its initial advantage was its proximity to the coalfields. Other ports such as Bristol, Liverpool and Glasgow outgrew Whitehaven around the 19th century since they could, by this point, transport coal by rail. By the 1980s coal mining in Whitehaven had ceased entirely with the closure of the last mine - Haig colliery. Today the main industry in the town is the nearby Sellafield nuclear complex.

In 1974 the historical counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, along with the Furness Peninsula of Lancashire, merged to form the ceremonial county of Cumbria. Since then, Whitehaven has been part of the Borough of Copeland in Cumbria.

Whitehaven is represented in sport by rugby league team Whitehaven R.L.F.C. They play their home games at the Recreation Ground.

Whitehaven, Cumbria (The Essential Travel Guide)

Facing the Irish Sea in the far north west of England, historic Whitehaven was built on coal, shipping and elegant Georgian architecture. Modern Whitehaven is a revitalised town with a yacht filled harbour and a plethora of public artworks. Visit the Rum Story and the Beacon as well as meeting local artist Natalie Burns. You'll be surprised by Whitehaven, and not just because it fought back a raiding party led by John Paul Jones and his nascent American Navy. Enjoy the film and subscribe to the channel!
