WESTGATE ON SEA: Thanet Parish #10 of 11

The penultimate parish in Thanet sees TVI take on the newest one in the district. This did not exist as a civil parish until 2015, so it's only six years old, but the settlement we find occupying this small two square kilometres of the North Kent coast has been here for a lot longer. This place was originally nothing more than a farm and a coastguard station in the 19th century, but these days it is far far more.

Built relatively quickly between 1860 and 1901 for the upper and middle classes, this town was designed to be a seaside resort for the wealthy, and as you walk around it, you get the impression that's exactly what it once was. Things have altered a little since then, but you can still see some evidence in the old architecture around the place that this was certainly not a place that just anyone could rock up at. In the modern day though it certainly is.

Come and explore the lovely Victorian canopied shops, the picturesque buildings and the gorgeous West Bay seafront, all within a short walk of the train station which links this part of Kent to London Victoria Station, an hour and a half down the line. It's certainly much quieter than neighbouring Birchington. It shares a golf course with its neighbour on the clifftops between the parishes.

If you come here, you will inevitably come across the history surrounding the B24 Liberator crash, like I did. On the clifftop, you're treated to a wonderful view across the sea, but in 1944 that was the scene of tragedy as two planes which attempted to land at RAF Manston ended up crashing into the sea here. A piece of local history that is marked by the memorial not too far away from the crash site.

A good couple of hours was spent walking around this small town, the newest parish in Thanet, and I hope this sixteen minutes is a good summary of the place known as WESTGATE ON SEA.

Best 10 Places To Visit In Kent 2023, England

Best 10 Places To Visit In Kent 2023, England
Often referred to as the Garden of England due to its endless acres of orchards and lush gardens, the county of Kent offers no end of fun things to do for those willing to wander a little further off the beaten track.

Not only is Kent well-known for its relatively mild climate, it also boasts some of England's oldest and most important historic attractions. It was in Kent that the Romans launched their invasion of England some 55 years before the birth of Christ, and where, over 500 years later, the Christian faith was first introduced to the island nation. As a result of these events, you'll often find Roman ruins brushing up against important religious sites, as is the case in the cathedral city of Canterbury.

Kent also boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in England. Visit the east coast of Kent, and you'll see the famous White Cliffs of Dover looking out towards neighboring France, visible in the distance. This same coastline is home to some 50 or more Kentish beaches, most of them easy day trips from London.

Places to see in ( Birchington - UK )

Places to see in ( Birchington - UK )

Birchington-on-Sea is a village in north east Kent, England, with a population of around 10,000. It is part of the Thanet district and forms part of the civil parish of Birchington. It lies on the coast facing the North Sea, east of the Thames Estuary, between the seaside resorts of Herne Bay and Margate. As a seaside resort, the village is a tourist and retirement destination. The village's Minnis Bay is a family beach with attractions such as sailing, windsurfing, a paddling pool and coastal walking routes. Its three smaller beaches are surrounded by chalk cliffs, cliff stacks and caves.

The village was first recorded in 1240. Its parish church, All Saints', dates to the 13th century and its churchyard is the burial place of the 19th century Pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Quex Park, a local 19th century manor house, is home to the Powell-Cotton Museum and a twelve bell tower built for change ringing. The museum contains a large collection of stuffed exotic animals collected by Major Percy Powell-Cotton on his travels in Africa, and also houses artefacts unearthed in and around Birchington by his daughter, Antoinette Powell-Cotton, a keen archaeologist.

Birchington was first recorded in 1240 as Birchenton, a name derived from the Old English words 'bircen tun', meaning a farm where birch trees grow. Birchington-on-Sea is located in northeast Kent, on the coast of the Thames Estuary. The village is 14 kilometres (9 mi) to the east of Herne Bay and 6 kilometres (4 mi) to the west of Margate. The small town of Westgate-on-Sea lies between Birchington and Margate.

Minnis Bay is a popular family beach with attractions such as sailing, windsurfing, cafes, beach huts, public houses, restaurants, a paddling pool and coastal walking/cycling routes. The beach has gained a European Blue Flag Award for its cleanliness and safety. The village has three other smaller beaches, which are surrounded by chalk cliffs and cliff stacks. Wildlife that can be observed in the Thames Estuary includes seals, velvet swimming crabs and the migrant turnstone.

Paintings by local artists are displayed at the David Burley Gallery in Birchington Library. Community activities take place at the Birchington Village Centre, including adult education classes, drama productions by the Birchington Guild of Players and concerts by the Birchington Silver Band. In 1989, Birchington-on-Sea was twinned with the town of La Chapelle d'Armentieres, near Lille in northern France; Birchington Twinning Association arranges events between the two communities, such as school trips, concerts and war remembrance services. Since 1932, Birchington has held a street carnival each summer.

Birchington-on-Sea railway station is on the Chatham Main Line which runs between Ramsgate in East Kent and London Victoria. Other stations on this line include Broadstairs, Margate, Herne Bay, Faversham, Gillingham, Chatham, Rochester and Bromley South. Birchington is around 1 hour and 40 minutes from London by Mainline train. A National Express coach service also runs between London Victoria and Ramsgate via Birchington-on-Sea.

Westgate-on-Sea Walk: Town Centre & Beach【4K】

Located in the county of Kent, and just under two miles west of Margate, is the town of Westgate-on-Sea.

The town's name comes from Westgate Manor, which was located nearby in the medieval era. The 'on-Sea' suffix was added following the arrival of the railways to promote its seaside location on the north coast of the Isle of Thanet. The area is not a literal island, although it used to be up until around the 17th century or later based on the last known account of a ship traversing the Wantsum Channel in 1672. The Wantsum Channel had previously separated it from the mainland.

Before the 2nd half of the 19th century, the area comprised of a farm, a coastguard station, a few houses for the workers and very little else. This began to change from the 1860s when businessmen began to develop the area into a seaside resort specifically for the middle to upper classes. A stretch of sea wall was constructed to help prevent coastal erosion, and the town became a gated community for the wealthy families therein, in somewhat of a contrast to neighbouring Margate.

The town's growth was boosted by the opening of Westgate-on-Sea railway station in 1871. Today the station forms part of the Chatham Main Line. Trains from London typically take just under two hours. Trains to and from Margate take just three minutes, although it should be noted that it is possible to walk along the coast between the two towns in just over half an hour (barring mobility issues).

A beautiful English seaside town: Westgate-on-Sea

Westgate-on-Sea is a beautiful seaside town in Kent county, in the SE of England.
The town is notable for once being the location of a Royal Naval Air Service seaplane base at St Mildred's Bay, which defended the Thames Estuary coastal towns during World War I.
It has a long beach when the tide is out, with nice sand and plenty of rock pools too.

V17 Westgate-on-Sea, Minnis Bay, Reculver, Kent C8 Makeshift Camper Travelling the UK Coastline

Part 3 of my recent Kent Coast Adventure
After a walk around West Bay at Westgate on Sea, I headed to Minnis Bay. A good walk to Reculver along a concrete foot path, taking in the farmland and wetlands as well as the sea, and stopping at The King Ethelbert pub for beer and a baguette. The walk back ended with a very heavy rain and hail storm.
The trip ended with a mesmerising sunset. The colours of the sky, sea and beach were ever changing and I watched for hours.

Local beers were procured from the Algar Lodge Farm Shop near Sandwich.

Westgate Canterbury City Centre

The Westgate is a medieval gatehouse in Canterbury, Kent, England. This 60-foot (18 m) high western gate of the city wall is the largest surviving city gate in England. Built of Kentish ragstone around 1379, it is the last survivor of Canterbury's seven medieval gates, still well-preserved and one of the city's most distinctive landmarks. The road still passes between its drum towers. This scheduled monument and Grade I listed building houses the West Gate Towers Museum as well as a series of historically themed escape rooms.

At beautiful Westgate Gardens in Canterbury!

@pocketwanderings Westgate Gardens, situated on the banks of the River Stour in Canterbury, Kent, England, is a picturesque public park spread over an approximate area of 11 acres. It is a sought-after destination for both locals and tourists, providing a tranquil and calming ambiance in the midst of the bustling city.
The park has a fascinating past, dating back to the medieval era when it was employed as a market and fairground. In the 1800s, it evolved into a preferred spot for relaxation and amusement, and in the early 1900s, it was converted into a public park.
