The Best Camping in Florida
There’s no doubt that Florida is an RVer’s paradise. Filled with beautiful beaches, theme parks, national parks, wildlife watching, warm weather, and more, this destination attracts travelers of all kinds throughout the year—especially during winter months. While popular campgrounds book quickly as RVers escape cold weather across the U.S., Florida’s state and county parks offer an abundance of camping opportunities with scenic views, outdoor activities, and fewer crowds.
Florida has more than 170 parks located throughout the state, including 50 with campgrounds. Here are a few to check out the next time you plan a visit to the Sunshine State.
Myakka River State Park. Located in Sarasota, this state park offers diverse landscapes, wildlife, and more than 100 species of birds for premium birdwatching. There are three campgrounds with 90 RV sites, some of which offer full hookups and space for larger rigs.
Manatee Springs State Park. Home to picturesque freshwater springs, you can find this state park in Chiefland, Florida. From hiking trails to water activities, you’ll find plenty to do outside, and in the winter this is the perfect place to watch the manatees swim. There are RV campsites with hookups, and shower and restroom facilities within each camping loop.
Fort Desoto County Park. This county park is located in Saint Petersburg, Florida, and it offers more than 230 RV campsites. Many of the sites provide water and electrical hookups, as well as spectacular water views. Enjoy 7 miles of beachfront, and be sure to check out the park's historical Fort Desoto. Reservations can be made up to 6 months in advance.
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Make your way to Key Largo to stay at this Florida Keys destination. The park has plenty of RV campsites with hookups, and there’s a playground, cafe, laundry facilities, and a boat launch at the campground. Visitors can book snorkeling tours, hike a nature trail, kayak, and catch incredible sunsets.
Paynes Prairie State Park. With sites accommodating rigs of all sizes, this park is a great stop for seeing a different side of Florida’s diverse landscapes. Wild horses and bison roam through the prairie lands of the park. It’s also a great place to canoe, kayak, hike, and bike. Stop by the visitor center to learn more about the Indigenous history of this region.

Vero Beach is a city in and the seat of Indian River County, Florida, United States. It is thirty-four miles south from Melbourne. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2010 data, the city had a population of 15,220.
n 1715, a Spanish treasure fleet wrecked off the coast of Vero. Eleven out of twelve Spanish ships carrying tonnes of silver foundered in a hurricane. The remains of the silver attracted pirates. A group of 300 unemployed English privateers led by Henry Jennings stole about £87,500 in gold and silver in their first acts of piracy.
In 1872 Captain Allen W. Estes officially established the first land patent between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon, after settling in the area in 1870.
In 1893 Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway began operation through the area.
The town of Vero was chartered on June 13, 1919.
Vero was officially renamed Vero Beach and was switched from being part of St. Lucie County to become the county seat of Indian River County when it was formed in June, 1925. There are many theories on possible origin of the city name, but there's no consensus.
During the war year of 1942 the U.S. Navy selected 1,500 acres (6.1 km2) surrounding the Vero Beach Municipal Airport as the site of Fort Pierce Naval Amphibious Training Base, a Naval Air Station. Due to the bombing practices conducted during the WWII, there are many buried explosives and the Army Corps officials have conducted ongoing search & clearing exercises for the potentially dangerous items since 2014.
In 1951 Barber Bridge was built from mainland to barrier islands. It was later demolished and replaced in 1995 with the Merrill P. Barber Bridge. It is named after Merrill P. Barber who was the mayor of Vero beach in 1947.
In 1957 Piper Aircraft began research and development in Vero Beach. In 1961 Piper Aircraft moved administrative and manufacturing operations to Vero after completing building additions.
In 1965 the A1A bridge over the Sebastian Inlet connected the two barrier islands. In 1979, the 17th Street Bridge was completed, allowing a second point of access from Vero Beach mainland to the barrier islands.

All of the best restaurants and shops are within walking distance, and the streets are shaded by beautiful oak trees creating a beautiful cool breeze perfect for an afternoon stroll. Central Beach, also defined as the plant and tree streets. The roads are named in alphabetical order and are named after native plants and trees depending on which side of beach land you're on! If you’re looking for a walkable neighborhood by the beach, Central Beach is for you!
Number 2… Castaway Cove!
This neighborhood is popular with young families, it is a gated community with larger homes for families with most having a pool. The neighborhood is broken up into 5 waves or sections, east and west of A1A so residents get beach and river access! If you’re looking for a safe neighborhood close to Vero Beach’s amenities to raise a family in, Castaway Cove is for you!
Number 3…. Cache Cay!
A birds eye view of cache cay will remind you of your favorite pair of sunglasses. This small community is tucked away on the intercoastal and is perfect for boaters who want a dock in their backyard on the river or those who love water views as the homes also wrap around 2 sparkly lakes. We went to Vero Beach today, and the beach was full of seaweed that we could smell before we even hit the beach. Please check before your next beach vacation so that you are not disappointed! Seaweed could impact beach tourism this season due to the large amounts of seaweed that are predicted to hit the shores of the Florida Coast. There is currently a 5000 Mile wide blob of sargassum heading towards the coastline of Florida and the Caribbean.
