#sonsbeck is a municipality in the district of #wesel in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated approximately 20 km west of Wesel, and 25 km south-east of Cleves as well as 8 km from the historic city of Xanten.
It is one of North Rhine-Westphalia's wealthiest municipalities.
A watchtower was constructed on the Balberg by the Romans for protection of the road between Castra Vetera (near modern Xanten) and Blerick (Netherlands). The area around Sonsbeck was settled by the Germanic Cugernii tribe.
Middle Ages
The watchtower of the Romans was later reconstructed as a keep for the Dukes of Cleves. The remaining round tower (c. 1417) is called Römerturm (Roman tower) today, in reference to its early history.
In close proximity to the watchtower, the first settlement Suangochesboch emerged. The name of the settlement has two possible origins; the first from Latin sus (= pig) and the second from the Low German word soneman (= arbiter), so the name means either Schweinebach (pig stream) or the stream where the arbiter resides.

Wesel is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is the capital of the Wesel district. This city is the Riverside town of Rhine and it have beautiful scenario. Last 26th March 2021, I have visited Wesel city as a solo traveller and Bangladeshi Vlogger in Germany. This is very clean city and in my visiting most of time I have asked my self that why this city is look like new but later I have discovered that on 2nd world war almost 97% was destroyed and later it was built by new Germany. Berliner Gate is the main attraction of this city although this city have far distance from Berlin.
In This video I have try to cover main part of wesel but it’s not possible to take all the video clips in one vlog. I love to do vlogging that’s why every week I try to explore one city, it’s either big city or small city. Wesel one of medium city which I have visited and enjoyed for it’s nature and cleanliness. Peoples are very good because I have tried to talk with some local German and they are willing to talk with me but they are shy to come in camera and without their permission I couldn’t show them. If I am giving the explanation about wesel in one line than I can say, Wesel is a nice and clean city.

Xanten is a town in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located in the district of Wesel.
Xanten is known for the Archaeological Park, one of the largest archaeological open air museums in the world, built at the site of the Roman settlements Colonia Ulpia Traiana. Other attractions include the medieval town centre with Xanten Cathedral, many museums and large man-made lakes for various watersport activities. Xanten is visited by approximately one million tourists a year.
In the 5th century the Franks began to settle in the area of today's Xanten, but no urban settlements have been found from this time as the Franks did not build in stone, unlike the Romans. Only graves from this time have been discovered.
According to the legend of the Nibelungs, the mythical Siegfried of Xanten was born ze Santen an dem Rhîne.
After being taken by the Dukes of Cleves, in the wake of war and crop failure, the number of inhabitants slumped from 5,000 at the beginning of the 16th century to approximately 2,500 by the end of the 18th century. The Rhine had been a basis of Xanten's status as a trading town until the river bed shifted away from the town, causing its economic situation to deteriorate. The river even flooded and destroyed the locality of Birten several times.
The borough Marienbaum, however, became the main place of pilgrimage on the Lower Rhine between 1430 and 1441. In 1460 a monastery of the Bridgettines was established, with an abbey church called St. Mariä Himmelfahrt (Assumption of Mary) which nowadays serves as a parish church.

Das Ruhrgebiet zu Fuß: Walk Wesel ; Von der Zitadelle durch die City, grenzt an Duisburg,Xanten
Like und Abo nicht vergessen! Es sind 10 Grad Celsius (Winter 2022 Jahresende), stürmisch und nass. Eigentlich sollte man zu Hause sein, aber auch gut das nicht soviel unterwegs ist.
Wie heißt der Bürgermeister von Wesel? Prompt kommt die Antwort des Echos: Esel
Der Volksliederforscher Anton Wilhelm von Zuccalmaglio dokumentierte im 19 Jahrh. den Schmähruf.
Laut einem Reisebericht aus dem Jahr 1819 wurde der Spruch ursprünlich als Echoruf auf Rheinschifffahrten verwendet und bezog sich damals nicht auf das niederrheinische Wesel, sondern auf die im Mittelrheintal gelegene Stadt Oberwesel. Es wird aber lange überwiegend mit der Stadt Wesel in Verbindung gebracht. Das eigentliche Wappentier ist das Wiesel, auf dem Stadtwappen sind drei silberne Wiesel dargestellt, welches ja auch eine Ähnlichkeit zum Stadtnamen gibt.
Der Esel von Wesel ist das Symboltier der Stadt. Man wundert sich wie oft man den sieht und selbst in privaten Gärten. Aber auch jährlich wird der Eselsorden verliehen (Karnevalsorden) und findet das EselRockFestival statt.
Ich laufe in Wesel von der Zitadelle los am Bahnhof vorbei über das Berliner Tor durch die ganze Innenstadt zum großen Markt, wo das Wahrzeichen der Stadt (das historisch barocke Rathaus steht) welche die Fassade bis 2011 rekonstruiert wurde und dem Willibrodi- Dom, der nach verschiedenen Bauphasen wieder das Erscheinungsbild des 16 Jahrh. hat. Dann einfach weiter durch die Stadt.
Was man Wesel leider ansieht und deshalb nur sehr wenige alte Häuser erhalten sind, die Stadt am Rhein und wo die Lippe in den Rhein mündet wurde wegen seiner strategischen Lage im zweiten Weltkrieg fast komplett zerstört (97%). Ab Mitte 1946 begann die Enttrümmerung und der Wiederaufbau welche mit Hilfe des Notstandswerks Wesel hilft sich selbst realisiert wurde.
Die Stadt gehört zum Kreis Wesel , zur Metropolregion Rhein- Ruhr im Reg.Bez. Düsseldorf. Wesel entwickelte sich 1407 zu einer bedeutenden Handelsstadt und erreichte die Aufnahme in den Hansebund.
Geschichte:
Von hier aus unternahm Kaiser Karl der Große mehrere Feldzüge gegen Sachsen und Dänen. Als Ursprung wird ein fränkischer Gutshof vermutet. Anfang des 8. Jahrh. erwähnt eine Urkundabschrift im Kloster Echternach erstmals den Namen Wesele
Während des Achtzigjährigen Krieges wurde Wesel von Spaniern besetzt bis die Stadt von Holländischen Truppen 1629 erobert wurde. Im Holländischen Krieg 1672 von Französischen Truppen erobert und die Stadt bis1680 bestezt hielten und ausplünderten.
Unter Kurfürst Friedrich Wilhelm wurde Wesel zu einer Festung ausgebaut. Am 12 August 1730, eine Woche nach dem gescheiterten Fluchtversuch begegnete Kronprinz Friedrich von Preußen, der spätere Friedrich der Große, auf der Festung Wesel seinem Vater, dem Soldatenkönig, der ihn infolge eines heftigen Wortgefechts umbringen wollte. Nur das Dazwischentreten des Kommandanten, Generalmajor von der Mosel, verhinderte eine Tragödie.1805 trat Preußen Wesel an Napoleon Bonaparte ab. Am 16 Dez 1809 wurden 11 Schillische Offiziere hingerichtet und von der französischen Besatzungsmacht 148 Studenten des Priesterseminars Gent in der Zitadelle gefangen gehalten, 35 verstarben. Preußen erlangte seinen vormaligen Besitz beim Wiener Kongreß 1815 zurück und wurde unter anderem mit der Zitadelle Wesel zur Garnisionsstadt ausgebaut.
Peter Minuit (Kolonialpionier) Gründer des heutigen New York
Er wurde nach 1584 und vor 1595 in Wesel geboren. 1615 ist Minuit nach Utrecht als Diamantschleifer gegangen mit seiner Gemahlin. Warum er Wesel verlassen hat ist unbekannt. Vermutet wird, dass er vor der Unterdrückung der spanischen Truppen floh. Nach 1621 stand er wohl schon in den Diensten der gerade gegründeten holländischen Handels- und Kolonialorganisation WIC (Westindische Compagnie).
Dann erhielt er einen Auftrag, segelte nach Nieuw Amsterdam (heute New York) kaufte dort für 60 Gulden das heutige Manhattan und ließ eine Schutzmauer errichten, welche auch der heutigen Straße Wall Street den Namen gab. A day trip with a small group from Wesel (Germany) to Arnhem in the Netherlands on 29 April '17. You see the city centre with the shops, bars and restaurants. We came by of the preparations for the Cup final winner's celebration of Arnhem football club 'Vitesse'. Along the river Nederrijn (Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta) we met some vintage military vehicles. And on the way back to the Station the local Trolly Busses get my attention.
