Exploring MIAMI / SOUTH FLORIDA in 5 DAYS! // A Travel Itinerary Challenge Adventure

For our first ever visit exploring #Miami, #SouthFlorida in 5 days, we embark on a trip without planning a list of things to do, unlike our previous Travel Itinerary Challenge video series in Hawaii. On this travel adventure, we also search for key lime pies in #KeyWest and discover the #ManateeLagoon in West Palm Beach among other things that we try to eat, see and do.

~~~~~~
If this is your first time viewing our videos, welcome ????and thank you ????! For some background about this series:
For our first ever visit to the Miami and South Florida, we embarked on a 5 day spontaneous and impromptu trip without preparing a list of attractions, restaurants, and activities to see, eat and do.
In our years traveling together, we found the way we tend to travel is more akin to “power exploring” than “peaceful vacationing”, which often results in us trying to pack as many things into an itinerary that we can handle. And for our trips, we usually plan a rough itinerary or list of things we want to do, see, and eat at our destination.
Unlike our previous 2-week trip to 4 Hawaiian islands ( ), for this trip to Miami we didn’t create a travel itinerary list of things to do. We wanted to chronicle our adventures visiting Miami and other locations in South Florida as part of our Travel Itinerary Challenge Series--even though we don’t have a predetermined itinerary--to share our experience doing, eating, and seeing a number of attractions in a set amount of time in hopes it might help others deciding to visit Miami for the first time or for a return visit.
Below is the itinerary of things we were able to do during our 5-day trip to Miami & South Florida. If you have suggestions for things we missed out and should check out for a future visit, we’d love to know! Thank you! ✌️
Secret Waterfall Just East of the Catskills--Hanging Rock Falls (and Nevele Falls) in Ellenville, NY
Just a short, downhill walk to Beer Kill from Route 52 in Ellenville, NY is a massive waterfall that is practically unheard of, Hanging Rock Falls. Yes, you will find it online—that was how I found it—but what few websites you’d likely find were posted only in recent years some as recent as this year. Indeed, a December 2020 post says they’ve “lived here for almost 8 years now and have never heard of or been to this waterfall”. It’s a powerful waterfall formed by massive rocks tiered in a stair-step cascade approximately 100 feet in height that is not much talked about either through intent—the locals might want to keep such gem to themselves—or scorn after the automobile then the airplane diverted New York City vacationers away from Ellenville to other far-flung destinations thus ending Ellenville’s glory days as a vacation hotspot when rail was the only means of long-distance travel on land.
This region east of the Catskills—the Rondout Valley and the nearby Shawangunk Mountains—is riddled with waterfalls and Hanging Rock Falls just 2.5 miles north of the Ellenville village center on Route 52 is just one. Two miles south also on Route 52 is another waterfall, Nevele Falls, sometimes called Buttermilk Falls by locals. The name “Nevele” came from the name of an inn owned by an early Jewish farmer renting out rooms. In 1903, he named his inn “Nevele” after the number of his children, eleven, spelled backwards.
The name “Ellenville” itself has a storied origin. Local lore has it that in the early 1800s the villagers needed to name their village to apply for their own post office. Coming up blank they settled on the name of one of them, Ellen. So Ellenville it was and Ellenville since.
If you’re ever in the area, I strongly suggest visiting these two waterfalls as they are practically by the roadside with Hanging Rock Falls offering a deeper trek into nature with many possible off-trail—with caution of course as the terrain can be steep—attractions and adventures.
PROSPECT MOUNTAIN/Lake George, NY/Adirondack Mountains/Grand Travelers/Gate 24 Travel
Hey, Grand Travelers! Robert and I first visited #prospectmountain in 2020, and absolutely enjoyed the scenery. At that time, the summit was closed due to construction. This year, we couldn't wait to drive the mountain again. It was so beautiful with the reds, golds, and oranges of Autumn. AND the summit was open! Yay! I seriously didn't think I'd make it to the top. Being out-of-shape with an ankle that never healed completely from a massive break didn't help matters. BUT, I made it! And it was worth the effort and the climb to get to the top. I hope you enjoy traveling up this mountain with us. Thanks for watching!
Visit Wawarsing / Ellenville
Wawarsing, NY: Stony Kill Falls & Lake Minnewaska
Met up with my friend Beth - who I have not seen since March 2020 because she lives in NYC and is an ER nurse [ Thanks Beth :) ]. Had a fun day exploring Wawarsing in the Hudson Valley. We hiked in Stony Kill Park to see the Stony Kills Falls with her Pomeranian, Grayson. We then headed over to Lake Minnewaska, where everyone asked us if they could swim in the lake. I let everyone know that I was **ok** with them doing so...but they needed to watch out for...the snakes in the lake!!
Sam's Point Preserve - Epic Day Hike! - Scenic Views, Ice Caves, Huge Waterfalls, and Pygmy Forests!
Come along for an adventure through one of New York State's premiere day hiking locations. Sam's Point Preserve is part of the expansive Minnewaska State Park Preserve located high atop the Shawangunk Mountain Range in Ulster County, New York. On this hike I arrived at 845 AM - gates open at 9, to do an out and back hike of approximately 7 miles featuring loads of cool features. After parking at the visitor center - currently closed - ( restrooms open) and paying the 10 dollar parking fee I quickly began my ascent up a wide carriage road to Sam's Point Overlook. The huge rock overhang features an expansive view of the valley 1000 feet below. The viewpoint is only about 15 - 20 minutes walk from the visitor center, and the climb is really not that bad. From there I continued along the carriage road along the top of the ridge towards the Ellenville Ice Caves natural feature. It is during this section that the trail / road transitions from broadleaf deciduous forest to the extremely rare and unique pitch pine ridge top habitat. Eventually the carriage road leads to the amazing ice caves trail loop. This was my favorite part of the hike, a half mile trail loop through chasms, passages, and caves. Snow and ice that builds up in this area during the winter is known to last well into the summer time and the temperatures are remarkably cooler and refreshing in and around the caves. At the time I was there, various ground water streams were traveling through and around the trail, which also featured a ladder and several bridges. This area truly felt like an adventure and was worth the price of admission in it's own right. Next, I pushed on to the nearby Verkeerderkill Falls trail. This trail was rocky and dry and really leads through the heart of the pygmy pines. Unfortunately, many of the pines were burned in a forest fire in 2016. The landscape here is desolate and wild with long unobstructed views upon the Shawagunk Ridge beyond, as the trees fail to grow beyond a height of 6 to 8 feet! I loved this section of trail but the afternoon sun and lack of shade had begun to wear upon me as I made my way the 1.7 miles towards Verkeerderkill Falls. Finally arriving at the 187 foot tall falls was amazing. The views into the massive amphitheater were epic and unforgettable. An excellent place to relax, recover, and reflect before making the return journey to the car.
