Driving Around Kankakee, Illinois in 4k Video
Filmed on Saturday, August 12 2023, I drive around the city Kankakee, IL to see what's going on.
The city's name is probably derived from a corrupted version of the Miami-Illinois word teeyaahkiki, meaning: Open country/exposed land/land in open/land exposed to view.
The Kankakee River runs through Kankakee. It is approximately 133 miles long and serves as a major attraction and defining landmark of Kankakee. The river water is refined at the Kankakee water company, and electricity is generated at the Kankakee River Dam, providing vital resources to the community. Its winding path, including inlets and eddies, creates desirable fishing conditions for outdoor enthusiasts.
Frank Lloyd Wright designed two houses in the Riverview section of the city, located on South Harrison Ave. The B. Harley Bradley House and the Warren Hickox House both still stand today.
In 1999, the city was mocked on the Late Show with David Letterman after being named America's worst place to live. As a gag, David Letterman donated two gazebos to the city in the hopes it would proclaim itself as The home of the world famous twin gazebos. In 2015, the gazebos were torn down and a rocking chair was built from the wood, and was sent to Letterman for his retirement.
As of the census of 2020, there were 24,052 people residing in the city, down from 27,537 in 2010.
The racial makeup of the city was 33.66% White, 38.39% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 3.81% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.95% of the population.
The median household income was $38,869 and the per capita income was $21,134. 28.2% of the population were living below the poverty line.

Hoopeston, Illinois has a very colorful past which includes being home to several POW Camps for German soldiers during WWII. During their confinement in Hoopeston, one small group of prisoners escaped trying to get to South America but were captured nearby just a few days later. This video also reveals stories about how the town became the Sweet Corn Capital; the massive Hoopeston Canning Company which later became part of Stokley-Van Camp, how the term Corn Jerkers came about and how a queen was robbed of her crown.

Chapter 1: What to do in Metropolis IL?
We had a good time seeing all the Superman sights!! Giant statue, museum gifts shops and everything in the town seems to be Superman themed or at least has posters and pictures of Superman or something decorative relating to Superman. There’s a shop called Hidden Gem on main drag near the statue and it has tons of memorabilia that was awesome. We had late lunch at Fat Edd’s Roadhouse it was delicious! The grocery store, Big John is nice and has anything you need grocery related, the bowling alley is newly renovated and really nice, the arcade was still under renovation but bowling was open! Of course the state park, where we stayed was so nice and quiet with friendly campers a wonderful camp host and lots of beautiful scenery, trail for bikes and hiking and a boat ramp! The shower house is new and are singles for one person or families to go in together equipped with toilet, shower sink and a bench, it didn’t get hot inside even with 90 degree weather. The spots here are nice and spacious. We did get eaten alive by mosquitos but oh well we have enjoyed the stay! There are also some antique stores and just cute boutiques and shops! So stop by and check it all out !!

My old house in Alsip
I paid a visit to the house in Alsip, Illinois where my family lived in form 1973 to 1983. My brother and his kids and my kids were there, on the first clip when I told my brother to pull over and I went out with my cell phone obviously taking pictures, the owner went out and berated me for taking pictures. I immediately stopped filming told her that I used to live there and she quickly warmed up to me and invited us all in the front and backyard.
Aside from the backyard and the garage everything in this house remains the same. I asked if I can come inside and she welcomed me in. I snapped some pics of the kitchen and living room. The cabinets in the kitchen are original and aside from their furniture everything look the same.
