We're nearing the end of our upstate New York trip away from NYC, and one of the furthest regions in the state someone can get from the city is known as North Country, a backwoods and rural covered in forests and farmland; an area more culturally similar to Canada than downstate. In this region stands a small city with a charming past of classic American industry and historic tourism for the wealthy. Filmed on Sunday, May 28 2023, I drive around Watertown, Wisconsin to see what's happening.
Watertown was founded in 1836 by Timothy Johnson, who purchased land at the site where the Rock River cascades down a small waterfall. He envisioned the area's potential for water power and named the settlement Watertown. The city grew rapidly due to its advantageous location along the river, which facilitated the development of mills and other industries.
Watertown has a significant German heritage. In the mid-19th century, German immigrants flocked to the area, bringing with them a strong work ethic and contributing to the city's industrial growth. Watertown became known as Klein-Wien or Little Vienna due to its German cultural influence.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Watertown emerged as a thriving industrial center. It was home to numerous industries, including manufacturing of machinery, foundries, and textiles. One notable industry was the manufacture of wooden wagons and carriages, which earned Watertown the nickname The Carriage City.
Watertown is recognized for having the first kindergarten in the United States. Margarethe Meyer Schurz, wife of prominent German-American statesman Carl Schurz, established the first kindergarten in Watertown in 1856. Today, the site is marked by a historical plaque.
As of the census of 2020, the population was 22,926.
The racial makeup of the city was 87.9% White, 1.2% Black or African American, 0.8% Asian, 0.4% Native American, 3.5% from other races, and 6.2% from two or more races. 9.6% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The median household income was $59,111 and the per capita income was $28,710. 8.7% of the population lived below the poverty line.
