Waterloo : A City of Students | Ontario | Canada | Major Attractions | Explore | Travel

Waterloo

Located in the heart of Southwest Ontario, Waterloo Region provides the perfect balance between new and old, rural and urban, nature and technology, classical and contemporary, tranquility and adventure.

Waterloo is home to two of the highest-ranked universities in the country and attracts some of the best and brightest talent from around the world. Think tanks like the Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics, Centre for International Governance Innovation and the Mike and Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum Nano Centre are helping to translate great ideas into some of the most successful and innovative businesses in the country. Uptown Waterloo is a thriving urban centre with award-winning architecture, unique shops and fantastic restaurants.

With two universities and a college, Waterloo is a city for students. Between shops, restaurants, parks, and activities, there’s so much to do and see outside of your studies at the University of Waterloo.

With more than 50,000 university and college students and one of the youngest populations in Canada, Waterloo region has many restaurants, shops, and services geared to students!

The cities of Waterloo and Kitchener blend into each other and are really one big city. People distinguish between the two by calling one uptown (Waterloo) and the other downtown (Kitchener).

There are more than 400 restaurants, shops, and boutiques, and Uptown is home to several festivals and events each year. There's always something to do!

One extremely popular event that attracts people from all over is Oktoberfest, Canada's greatest Bavarian festival. This event includes a Thanksgiving Day parade and over 40 cultural events. Enjoy food and beverages, and dance the night away!

Eating out

In Waterloo, there are many restaurants, pubs, cafés, and bars for you to enjoy a nice meal and hang out with friends. There are many options that will surely satisfy your cravings!

Right beside our main campus, the University Shops Plaza is filled with dozens of restaurants that offer a variety of food from different cultures. And if you don't have cash on you, fear not. Some shops at UW Plaza will accept flex dollars from your student card as payment!

Some popular spots in Waterloo include Phil's Grandson's Place, Molly Bloom's, and Morty's Pub. Many places also host live bands or other entertainment.

Welcome to Waterloo: a city filled with students, made for students. Prepare yourself for an unforgettable university experience and get ready to indulge in the dynamic environment that comes with being a student in the region of Waterloo.

There are students all around Waterloo, which creates a good atmosphere.

In Uptown Waterloo

You will find shops, restaurants, places to explore and lots of coffee shops!

There’s night life too, you can see bands, DJ’s, music festivals or check out North America’s largest OKTOBERFEST.

If you are looking for a place to relax or play, the city has 150 kilometres of trails and many parks to explore.
In fact Waterloo park is right next to the campus — go for a bike ride.

The area is also a great place to launch a career. There are over a 1000 technology companies located here. And start-ups are launched everyday, many of them founded by the students

Waterloo has one of the youngest and most multicultural populations in Canada.

Waterloo, IA | A 4K City Walking Tour

Waterloo was originally known as Prairie Rapids Crossing. The town was established near two Meskwaki American tribal seasonal camps alongside the Cedar River. It was first settled in 1845 when George and Mary Melrose Hanna and their children arrived on the east bank of the Red Cedar River (now just called the Cedar River). The name Waterloo supplanted the original name, Prairie Rapids Crossing, shortly after Charles Mullan petitioned for a post office in the town. Since the signed petition did not include the name of the proposed post office location, Mullan was charged with selecting the name when he submitted the petition. Tradition has it that as he flipped through a list of other post offices in the United States, he came upon the name Waterloo. The name struck his fancy, and a post office was established under that name.
