Places to see in ( Edwinstowe - UK )

Places to see in ( Edwinstowe - UK )

Edwinstowe is a large village in Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire, England, with associations to the Robin Hood and Maid Marian legends. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 5,188.

The village name meaning Edwin's resting place recalls that King (and Saint) Edwin of Northumbria's body was hidden in the church after he was killed in the Battle of Hatfield Chase, near Doncaster, probably in 633. The battle against King Penda of Mercia occurred near the present-day hamlet of Cuckney, some five miles north-west of modern Edwinstowe.

Edwinstowe is referenced twice in the Domesday Book. It records that there were five households, in addition to one priest and his four bordars, living in the hamlet in 1086.

Legend has it that Robin Hood married Maid Marian in St Mary's Church. Edwinstowe's present-day popularity is due mainly to the presence near the village of the Major Oak, a feature in the folklore of Robin Hood.

Thoresby Colliery served as Edwinstowe's main source of employment until July 2015, when the mine was permanently closed. The loss of the colliery, one of the last remaining and part of a national closure of the British deep-mined coal industry, has left tourism as the primary branch of the local economy. Nottinghamshire County Council's nearby Sherwood Forest Visitors' Centre is scheduled for redevelopment and improvement, with a contract awarded to RSPB, intended for completion by late 2017 at a projected cost of £5.3 million.

Edwinstowe has six pubs: the Black Swan, the Dukeries Lodge, Forest Lodge, Hammer and Wedge, the Manvers and the Royal Oak. Other catering facilities include the Edwinstowe Bistro Restaurant, the Cottage Tea Rooms, and Launay's Restaurant.
Environmental concerns are addressed at the Maun Valley Project Conservation Area.

Edwinstowe had a railway station between 1897 and 1955. A goods line remains. The nearest railway station today is at Mansfield (6 miles, 10 km). The village is served by twice-hourly, daytime Monday–Saturday bus services to Mansfield and Ollerton, six buses Monday–Saturday to Worksop, and one bus Monday–Friday to Nottingham. Services run twice a week to Newark and once a week to Lincoln.

( Edwinstowe - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Edwinstowe . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Edwinstowe - UK

MANSFIELD

Mansfield (near Nottingham) is a large market town and the administrative centre of Mansfield District in Nottinghamshire, England. Let's have a look around the town centre!
Also watch our video of Nottingham Christmas Market -

We thought we'd venture to Nottinghamshire to wander round Mansfield Town Centre to see what's there, what shops and markets we can find and see what's happening there today!

Mansfield is the largest town in the wider Mansfield Urban Area. It gained the Royal Charter of a market town in 1227. The town lies in the Maun Valley, 12 miles north of Nottingham and near Sutton-in-Ashfield

Mansfield is Nottinghamshire’s largest market town, located right on the edge of the beautiful countryside, perfect for relaxing walks and easy access to woodland areas of Sherwood Forest. Spend a few hours exploring Thieves Wood and Fountaindale, both located a few miles to the south of the town centre with close links to the Robin Hood legend.

On the outskirts of Mansfield as you venture closer to Sherwood Forest, you’ll find Robin Hood's Wheelgate Park, a theme park with lots of rides and activities for children aged 5-12. Take a ride on the Mini Mine coaster or squirt each other on the bumper boats. Close by is White Post Farm Centre, giving you the opportunity to get up close to some beautiful animals, including goats, deer, pigs, meerkats and even wallabies.

Take the short walk down Leeming Street in Mansfield into the town centre where you will be greeted with an excellent shopping experience. The market in Mansfield is still a very vibrant place for traders and remains at the heart of the town centre.

Just outside of Mansfield, in Mansfield Woodhouse, you'll find i-Jump Trampoline Park, which is the perfect place for all the family to get fit and have fun. With over 55 interconnected trampolines, this is the perfect place for you to put your aerobatic skills to the test!

With a very vibrant nightlife, a large range of shops and a wealth of attractions close by, Mansfield remains a popular and proud place for many residents. We love Mansfield and if you head there, you’ll understand why.

Mansfield, town and district, administrative and historic county of Nottinghamshire, England, on the River Maun. Mansfield was the chief town of Sherwood Forest—the legendary base for the activities of Robin Hood, the medieval robber and popular hero—and the forest court was held in the town’s Moot Hall (built 1752).

The population of Mansfield grew with the 19th-century expansion of coal mining and the hosiery industry, and both remain major local employers of labour. Hard red and white sandstone quarried near the town of Mansfield Woodhouse, 2 miles (3 km) north of Mansfield, was used to build the Houses of Parliament at Westminster. The district also includes the town of Warsop and part of Sherwood Forest.

Shirebrook Valley Walk / Explore - Lost Industry in Sheffield

We walk and explore around the Shirebrook Valley Nature Reserve in South East Sheffield. Home to lots of lost industry in sheffield.

The nature reserve includes remains of old sickle and sythe forges and mills, two disused dams (Rainbow Dam & Carr Forge Dam), an old sewerage works (Coisley Hill), a former colliery (Birley East Colliery) and a reclaimed landfill site.

The site sits next to the A57 between the villages of Beighton, Woodhouse and Hackenthorpe in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

A very common place for walkers, runners and cyclists, the Trans-Pennine Trail cuts right through the heart of the nature reserve.

If you explore away from the main paths, you can find evidence of the lost industry that has allowed nature to reclaim.

The nature reserve also includes a visitor centre and picnic area.

My channel was set up in 2020 mainly to feature my running adventures. I planned to film and showcase the days out and destinations my running travels took me. Mainly the Peak District and the sights and marvels of Sheffield and the surrounding regions.

However due to Covid restrictions, I found a new interest in researching and exploring old abandoned places - railway lines, canal, woodland, parks to name a few.
So the videos you'll find will be mainly be of those things. Of course, where possible I'll be running to my destination.

The Creepy Lamppost in the Woods

Disused Railway Explore LD&ECR Beighton Branch - The Spinkhill Lamppost Mystery

***link to previous video on the LD&ECR

I take a walk along the former Lancashire, Derbyshire & East Coast Railway between Killamarsh and Spinkhill (also known as the Beighton Branch) - on the outskirts of Sheffield.

Situated just outside the old station at Spinkhill is the the entrance and junction to Westhorpe Colliery, which closed in the 1980s. Up until it's closure, the line was still used by freight trains as far as Spinkhill to access the colliery.

Now claimed by nature, the area of the old sidings hide left over railway infrastructure such as sleepers, concrete installations, signalling timbers. Now dwarfed by the surrounding trees is an old double lampost. Looking rather out of place and lost, this abandoned piece of one busy yard remains untouched, but well hidden in the foliage and rows of Silver Birch trees.

The Alps, Cockpit Country, Trelawny, Jamaica

19:15 The Alps Cave

⭐ Brief History:
The Alps is situated on a major geological fault. In 1840, the Jamaica Almanac reports that the Alps consisted of 551 acres. The abrupt landscape and the winding road presumably reminded the British colonists of the European Alps hence the name.

According to the locals the Alps has seven caves, two springs, one lake, and a river.

The South Trelawny Edu-Skills Centre was actually the Alps Primary School.

The Alps Primary School had to close its doors due to its dwindling student population. At the time the school had 56 students and three teachers, to including the principal. The students and teachers were transferred to nearby schools, including the Ulster Spring Primary, located approximately five miles away from Alps.

The South Trelawny Edu-Skills Centre then took the place of the Primary School, to teach young people about farming and other disciplines.

The Alps School closure was some time in 2015

The Alps Baptist Church was the second to be consecrated in Trelawny. it is really a converted Coffee House which was the only building available to the Rev. William Dexter of the London Baptist Missionary Society who came to Jamaica in 1835.

20:28 Former Arkwright Town Station & LD&ECR line

We explore the former Great Central Railway Derbyshire lines in North East Derbyshire. Starting at entrance to the former Staveley Town (Staveley Central) station, we look at what is on the site now.

Originating as the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (MS&LR), the company later changed it's name to the Great Central Railway (GCR) and constructed it's Derbyshire lines in the 1890s, before pushing south to London.

Staveley opened in 1892 and closed in 1963/1964.

From Staveley we follow the line south towards the junction with the LD&ECR (Lancashire Derbyshire & East Coast Railway). At Duckmanton we see a triangular junction where we find some left over evidence of infrastructure and former signal box at Duckmanton North Junction.

The line ducks under the road bridge near Arkwright Town before crossing the LD&ECR.

We also take a look at the site of the former railway station at Arkwright Town on the line between Bolsolver and Chesterfield Market Place stations. Nothing remains of the station these days and the trackbed is difficult to trace.

Historic British Dockyard Gets New Lease on Life

For more than 400 years, the Chatham Dockyard was at the heart of British Maritime history. When it closed in 1984, thousands were put out of work and the dockyard fell into disuse. But now it is emerging as a tourist destination, an educational center and a hub for young entrepreneurs. Jennifer Glasse reports from Chatham Dockyard, which supplied a desk for the President of the United States.

Doncaster Disused Railway & Disused Doncaster York Road Station

Doncaster Disused Railway & Disused York Road Station
Hull & Barnsley and Great Central Join Railway Explore

We take a walk on the former HB&GCJR from the fomer Doncaster York Road station towards the River Don near Warmsworth. The old ine is now part of the Trans-Pennine Trail network. The Doncaster end is also known as the Doncaster Greenway.

The York Road station opened in 1916 however it didnt actually see any scheduled passenger trains. The station sat there until the 1960s where it was closed and demolished. The site of the station sat at the junction of the old A1 (Great North Road) and A19 (Selby Road), just to the north of Doncaster.

The line itself closed in stages from 1939 to the 1960s.

From the old Doncaster York Road station, we head north and see the site of the old crossing at Pipering Lane, around a mile from Doncaster.

From here we head back down the other side of the triangle towards Warmsworth. Passing under the old Great North Road and skirting alongside the Cusworth Hall estate. A short time later we pass on our right hand side the site of the former Sprotbrough Foundry. The foundry boasts a key role in the 2nd World War where is make track links for some of the world's best known tanks.

After diving under Sprotbrough Road, the line emerges from a cutting towards Sprotbrough Junction, where the line linked with the Doncaster avoiding line.

We then emerge from the trees on to the large steel structure bridge which spans the River Don. One of 3 large bridges crossing the river. The others being the A1 motorway and the Doncaster Avoiding line.

The line then disappears in to the landscape. From here through the village of Warmsworth, the route of the line has been developed and very little evidence is visible of any sign of railway.
