Great British Market Towns - Ware 4K
In the 18th century, Ware was the premier malting town in England, specialising in brown malt for the brewing of a beer known as `porter'. Fortunes were made (and lost) in the malting industry and men were drawn to the town to work in the maltings or on the barges which took the malt to the breweries of London. Ware is full of architectural jewels - many of them timber-framed. English Heritage has listed four of its buildings as Grade I, fifteen as Grade II* and 181 as Grade II.

Ware Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Hertfordshire, and just over 20 miles north of central London, is the town of Ware.
It is claimed that Ware is one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in Western Europe. This is based on archaeological excavations near Ware Lock which revealed settlements going back to the Mesolithic or Middle Stone Age 5,000 to 10,000 years ago.
Geographically Ware is situated on the point where the old Roman road between London, Lincoln and York known as Ermine Street, and later the Old North Road, crossed the River Lea. The Romans had a settlement here consisting of several buildings, a temple and two cemeteries.
During the Saxon era Ware was positioned at the frontier between Wessex and the Danelaw. King Alfred is said to have travelled from London to Ware via the River Lea to engage the Danes in battle but was beaten off. So Alfred, using the Danes' own tactics, built fortifications on either side of the river and started work on diverting the rivers course so that the Danes could not row their ships down the Lea again to the Thames. The town's Saxon name 'Waras' allegedly comes from the weirs Alfred built.
The layout of Ware's town centre as it appears today was designed at the end of the 12th century. Between the 15th and 18th centuries, many coaching inns were established on what is now the High Street, owing to Ware's key location along the Old North Road. These inns began to disappear with the emergence of the malting industry. The passage of wagons bringing barley into the town for malting made the roads almost impassable for much of the winter. Samuel Pepys travelled to Cambridge via Ware, often complaining about the state of the road, particularly when he had to get down from the coach and fell into a ditch. But after the erection of the turnpike, he preferred to go via Bishop’s Stortford.
Whilst the coaching industry declined, the malting industry thrived. Its position between London and the barley-growing counties of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, along with easy access to London via the River Lea, made it ideally situated. Eventually the malthouses began to disappear with the last one closing in 1994. The Maltmaker Statue outside St Mary's Church pays homage to this industry.
During the late 19th century the pharmaceutical company Allen & Hanburys built factories in Ware, specialising in infants' foods, medicated pastilles and malt preparations among others. In 1958 the company was absorbed by Glaxo Laboratories, who later became GlaxoSmithKline as the result of a merger. Presently they are the main employer in Ware.
In 1843 the railway arrived in Ware. Today it lies on the Hertford East branch line to London Liverpool Street, making it a viable commuter town for those working in the capital.

Hertfordshire Village Walks. Part 6: Hertford to Ware.
This walk takes us from the county town of Hertfordshire along the Riverside Walk to the neighbouring town of Ware. First we take a walk around Hertford to view its historic buildings and other curiosities before taking the Riverside Walk along the River Lea to Ware. We stop for a much-needed drink at one of Ware's most popular pubs, The Waterside Inn, before taking a stroll up its High Street. We take a brief look inside the church, where a notorious figure from English history is reported to be interred, and then back along the Lea to Hertford.

What are the most populous cities in the United Kingdom? Let us go again into the census. We want to dissect the population as we wade through the four constituent countries making up the UK. We’re highlighting the 15 most populous cities in the UK. While we’ll travel around all the cities in the UK, we won't find any of the cities in Northern Ireland among the 15 largest cities in the UK.
London, doubling as the capital of England and the UK is the largest and most populous. The ranking here is based on the latest population figures of the cities in the United Kingdom as released by the Office for National Statistics. Now let’s go into the discussion of the 15 most populous cities in the UK.
15. Sunderland
Let’s begin with Sunderland as the 15th most popular city in the UK. This is a metropolitan borough in North East England with city status is named after the largest of its settlements. It is home to over 127,000 households which are spread across 60 neighborhoods. The city which is an industrial heritage of coal mining and shipbuilding is today a global manufacturing powerhouse. Sunderland's residents constitute over 10% of the North East's population and over 24% of the Tyne and Wear population. The population of Sunderland is 342,427.
14. Stoke-on-Trent
It shouldn’t surprise anyone living in the UK that Stoke-on-Trent is among the most populous cities there. In fact, its omission among the largest cities in the UK will be shocking to anyone who knows Stoke-on-Trent well. The city in the county of Stafford in central England is a major pottery manufacturing center and the location of the British ceramic industry. The Potteries District is an area of the city known for machinery, and chemicals. With an area of about 36 square miles, the city’s population is 387,785.
13. Coventry
A city more populous than Sunderland and Stoke-on-Trent is Coventry, a cathedral city in Warwickshire, England. The city which is home to the famous Warwick University has since been a car manufacturing center. The metropolitan county of West Midlands is the next one of the most populous cities in the UK. This city on the River Sherbourne has for centuries been a large settlement. Though it wasn't founded as a city centuries ago, it attained city status later during the Middle Ages. The current population of Coventry is 432,386.
12. Cardiff
The next on the list of the 15 most populous cities in the UK is Cardiff, the capital, largest, most popular, and most populous city of Wales. Cardiff is the home of the Welsh Assembly. Also an important industrial center, the city is the sole representative of Wales on this list of the largest cities in the UK. Known as the city of castles, it has more castles than any other city. The land area of this city is 54.2 square miles and it has a population of 481,082.
11. Edinburgh
The next one of the 15 most populous cities in the UK is Edinburgh. The city this time is the Scottish capital located. Apart from its being the seat of government, the position it has occupied since the 15th century, the University of Edinburgh adds to the population of this beautiful and dynamic capital city. The Old Town and New Town of Edinburgh together are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 542,599 people currently population of Edinburgh live on a land area of 100 square miles.
10. Manchester
Manchester, a city in England is another one of the most populous cities in the UK. The city about one hour from Liverpool experienced the most rapid growth rate during the Industrial Revolution when it got its reputation for textile manufacture. It thus became the first industrialized city in the world. Mancunians, as those living in Manchester, are called, enjoy great footballs as they are entertained by their lovely clubs with worldwide staunch supporters. The city sitting on an area of 44.65 square miles has a population of 552,858

Hertford is the county town of Hertfordshire, England, and is also a civil parish in the East Hertfordshire district of the county. Forming a civil parish, Since 1974, Hertford has been within the East Hertfordshire district of Hertfordshire.The headquarters of Hertfordshire County Council is at County Hall in Hertford. East Herts District Council's offices almost adjoin County Hall, and there is also a Hertford Town Council based at Hertford Castle.
Hertford is at the confluence of four river valleys: the Rib, Beane and Mimram join the River Lea at Hertford to flow south toward the Thames as the Lee Navigation, after Hertford Castle Weir.The shared valley of the Lea and the Beane is called Hartham Common and this provides a large park to one side of the town centre running towards Ware and lying below the ridge upon which Bengeo is situated.
The town centre still has its medieval layout with many timber-framed buildings hidden under later frontages, particularly in St Andrew Street. Hertford suffers from traffic problems despite the existence of the 1960s A414 bypass called Gascoyne Way which passes close to the town centre. Plans have long existed to connect the A10 with the A414, by-passing the town completely. Nevertheless, the town retains very much a country-town feel, despite lying only 19.2 miles (30.9 km) north of Central London. This is aided by its proximity to larger towns such as Harlow, Bishop's Stortford and Stevenage where modern development has been focused.

In the town are the remains of the original Hertford Castle, principally a motte. The castle's gatehouse, the central part of which dates to a rebuild by Edward IV in 1463, is the home to Hertford Town Council. The Motte, from the original Motte and Bailey castle in Hertford, can be found just behind Castle Hall, a short distance from the modern castle.
In Railway Street can be found the oldest purpose-built Quaker Meeting House in the world, in use since 1670. The Hertford Corn Exchange was built on the site of a former gaol. Hertford Museum is housed in a 17th-century historic town house, with a Jacobean-style knot garden. A stained-glass window in St Andrew's Church is part of a fringe theory that links Hertford to the Knights Templar and the Holy Grail.
Hertford serves as a commuter town for London, and has two stations. Hertford East (on the Hertford East Branch Line). Hertford North (on the Hertford Loop Line) . Hertford also lies just west of the A10 and the Kingsmead Viaduct which links it south to London and the M25 and north to Royston and Cambridge.

The Most Beautiful Walk? - Roydon to Ware Hertfordshire (4K)
Walk following part of the Harcamlow Way from Roydon Station in Essex to Ware in Hertfordshire. Along the way we visit the mediaeval moat in Moat Wood and cross the River Ash while passing through some of the most beautiful countryside I’ve seen on my walks. Heading to Europe & Not Sure What to Pack? Here are a few things that my fellow US travelers may want to avoid packing if they are traveling to Europe.
1. Baseball Caps: Europeans in general do not wear baseball caps, especially backwards. You would be better served to wear a more traditional hat. You will see an occasional NY Yankee hat, but why not buy the fancy hat you always wanted instead?
2. Athletic Wear: Europeans tend to wear athletic wear to do sports, not to wear around town. There is a trend of more athleisurewear in Europe, but it is not to the extent that there is in US.
3. Khakis: the omnipresent US male pant choice is not something you will see too often in Europe. Go for colored pants or jeans. If you want khaki like pants wear Chinos instead of Dockers. The pants you will see are a thinner cut or skinnier fit than in the US.
4. Oversized US University Sweatshirts.
5. Sport Shoes or High Heals: US sport shoes and white socks are not quite as popular in Europe as they are in the US. You may be better off with Urban Street shoes like Vans instead. Also, women should be careful with high heels as with all the cobblestone it is easy to hurt your ankles.

Things to see in Exeter So much more than the University in this history filled city...
We took a day trip to Exeter a great place to visit in the UK. With so much history, from its stunning Cathedral to it's beautiful Tudor buildings. Exeter has so much to offer for everyone and so much to see.
We spent the day walking around the historic sights and walked down the quirkiest, smallest, street in England. We enjoyed the sunshine at Exeter quay side and even saw a house that moved !!!. We were humbled by the well preserved St Catherines Almhouses the badly bombed church from world war two.
Exeter even has a dark history involving witches and was the last place in the UK that women were accused and executed for witch craft.
We can recommend visiting Exeter enough, there is so much more to Exeter than the university.

Hertford is the county town of Hertfordshire, England, and is also a civil parish in the East Hertfordshire district of the county. The town has a population of approximately 26,000, according to the 2011 census.

Hertford serves as a commuter town for London, and has two stations :
Hertford East (on the Hertford East Branch Line) provides a half-hourly service to London Liverpool Street (taking 52 minutes), via Tottenham Hale (which takes 35 minutes). The line is operated by Greater Anglia.
Hertford North (on the Hertford Loop Line) has a service every 20 minutes off-peak to London Moorgate station (taking 54 minutes), via Finsbury Park , (it takes 37 minutes to Finsbury Park station) (change for King's Cross) and hourly northwards to Stevenage (for onward connections via the East Coast Main Line) and Letchworth (change for Cambridge). Services are operated by Great Northern. This service uses Class 717 trains.
The A414 main road now bypasses the town centre to the south and runs east to Harlow, the M11 and Chelmsford and runs west to Hatfield, the A1(M), St Albans and the M1. Hertford also lies just west of the A10 and the Kingsmead Viaduct which links it south to London and the M25 and north to Royston and Cambridge.
