Wakkanai, Hokkaido｜Japan Walking Tour【4K】
I took a walk around Wakkanai City from Wakkanai Station.
Wakkanai City is the northernmost city in Japan with a population of about 32,000.
There used to be a ferry service between Wakkanai Port and Korsakov in Sakhalin, Russia, but it has been suspended since 2019.
The North Breakwater Dome, a landmark of Wakkanai, was built in 1936 and used as a pier for railroad liaison ships connecting Hokkaido and Sakhalin.

Wakkanai is located on the island of Hokkaido and also has the claim to fame of being the northernmost city in all of Japan. It also encompasses the neighboring Soya region and many domestic travelers come here to check out the snowy scenery and the slower pace of life here.
As this is the northernmost spot in the country, there are a range of attractions dedicated to marking this feat of geography, and you can also check out a range of northern animals such as cute seals. As you would imagine, you can also enjoy winter sports here such as skiing and there are a range of resorts that are located close to Wakkanai.
The scenery in this part of the country is also unparallel and you can spend time biking in the region and whizzing up and down rolling green hillsides that look out over sparkling waters as #wakkanai is located next to the sea.

The picture frame view from the Hotel room is really amazing and waking up with the beautiful sunrise by the seaside. Food is good too with great service. Top seafood in Hokkaido's northern most town, Wakkanai!
While in Wakkanai we stopped by the famous Take-chan. Famous for it's fresh seafood and rice bowl dishes.
We tried the creamy potato salad, ten-don prawn rice bowl, washed down with a Japanese whiskey high-ball.
Great food. Try for yourself!

Island Inn Rishiri is said to be the most beautiful hotel on Rishiri Island.

Today we travel to the Northern area of Hokkaido known as DoHoku..
From Abashiri to Sounkyo and along the Sea of Okhotsk all the way to Wakkanai.
Cape Soya and the white shell road were both absolutely beautiful. They're only 4km apart so If you happen to plan a trip to Wakkanai, definitely consider visiting both of them.
Sounkyo was great too. I was the type of place that you have to see with your naked eye since I'm sure that the camera definitely didn't do it justice.
Overall, today was a long day/drive but I can assure you it was a fantastic one. Please enjoy watching.

I've been to Hokkaido before for the snow festival a few years ago, and now I'm back in summer to see the beautiful flowers!! Hokkaido is Japan's northernmost prefecture, and it's absolutely MASSIVE. Seriously, we barely even touched a corner of it...I'll have to come back a few more times ????
Hokkaido is famous for its summer flower fields, especially lavender (though we missed it by a few weeks! but less crowds!), so it's definitely a great place to add to your travel list if you want to get out of the Tokyo-Kyoto loop on your next visit!!!
I have a Japanese license, but you're able to rent a car if you have an international driving permit too. Make sure you study the rules beforehand! But driving in Hokkaido is probably the easiest place I've driven in all of Japan! The roads here are wider, probably for snow accumulation in winter or something ????
But even if you don't drive, I would recommend taking a bus tour ???? You can get to some of these places by public transportation, but some (like the lake) you can't get to by train ????

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married 2013 and were super “normal.” I was a teacher and Nate started a small printing business from the spare bedroom of our apartment.
We discovered the world of “travel hacking” while planning our honeymoon & became addicted ;)
So after 2 years of obsessively saving $35k and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016 for a “one year” trip around the world.
Our goal was to see as many places as possible before we ran out of money and went back home to “normal life.” We started this travel vlog to share our experiences with friends and family, but quickly fell in love with living on the road and found a new passion for capturing our travels through video. So we did everything we could to keep going.
4 years later, we achieved our new goal of visiting 100 countries and all 7 continents. We had no plans to slow down, until 2020 forced us to ;) Which is when we bought a converted van to start exploring our own country for the first time.
After ~2 years of van life, we are back to full time traveling! And now we are finding the best adventures the world has to offer :)
We are incredibly grateful to be able to continue doing something we love every day. ???????????? Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey :)
