WAITANGI TREATY GROUNDS - The Birthplace of NEW ZEALAND || BAY OF ISLANDS || NORTHLAND NZ

#WAITANGITREATYGROUNDS #BAYOFISLANDS #NORTHLANDNZ #NEWZEALAND

We travel back in time as we learn about New Zealand’s history at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. It is an absolute must-do when you are in the Bay of Islands because it is rich in history and stories of the momentous events which shaped the nation.

The guided tour ended outside the Carved Meeting House where we are given a traditional Maori welcome before moving inside for a full cultural performance which includes songs, traditional war dance, and many more.

That doesn’t end our visit at Waitangi Treaty Grounds, we explored more. To mark the spot where the Treaty of Waitangi was first signed a huge flagstaff has been put up where the first three official flags are flying. We discovered more of history as we entered the Treaty House. It is the home of James Busby who is the first representative of the British Crown in New Zealand. We also went inside the Museum of the Price of Citizenship. This museum commemorates the commitment and sacrifice of Maori in the NZ Armed Forces.

Our final stop was the Museum of Waitangi that features images and artifacts that tell the stories of New Zealand’s past. This is also where different copies of New Zealand’s founding documents can be found.

This was our first out-of-town trip and it was worth an hour drive to be in one of the most historic places of New Zealand to witness Maori culture and of course to gain more understanding of the history of the country where we currently live.

Hope you enjoy our video. Thank you for watching!

Bay Of Islands, New Zealand - Travel Guide

Bay of Islands is one of the most culturally significant locations in New Zealand because it's where New Zealand's founding document the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the Maori Chiefs and the British Crown. On this episode we show you around some of the top places to visit and where to eat at in the Bay of Islands.

This episode starts with some scenic views of the Bay of Islands. We experience a bird's eye view of the area with Flying Kiwi Parasail aka Bay of Islands Parasail. They have New Zealand's highest parasail at 1300ft.

Address: Paihia wharf, Marsden rd, Paihia, 0200
Hours: Monday - Sunday 8am–8pm

Next up we visit a place that every Kiwi should go to at some point, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where we pay tribute to the birth location of our nation New Zealand. Here at the Treaty of Waitangi Grounds we got a guided tour of the grounds, a history lesson, got to see and learn about the world's largest waka taua (war canoe) and then experience an incredibly powerful and moving Maori cultural performance.

Big thank you to the folks from the Treaty of Waitangi Grounds for allowing us to film the performance (you need to get special permission to) and also special shout out to Waima and the crew for the amazing show! You guys are so wonderfully talented, it was a real honor to watch your performance and it was so awesome that Peter got picked to play the role of Chief! :)

You can get your day pass to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds by booking online here:

Address: Tau Henare Dr, Waitangi 0293

Open daily except Christmas Day.
26 December to 29 February: 9am to 6pm
1 March to 24 December: 9am to 5pm
On 6 February each year (Waitangi Day), Waitangi Treaty Grounds closes its buildings for the day and the grounds become the location of a free festival for the public to enjoy.

With both activities behind us it is time to get some food. We found some amazing wood fired pizzas at Charlotte's Kitchen. Not to mention some great views of the Bay of Islands from there too.
Address: 69 Marsden Rd, Paihia 0200
Hours - Monday - Sunday 8:30am–11pm

After that we headed over to the former capital of New Zealand, Russell or otherwise known as Kororāreka (and also Okiato). There was a special hotel that we've wanted to stay at for a very long time - The Duke of Marlborough. Here at The Duke Of Marlborough Hotel, we also enjoyed a delicious meal with rustic hearty flavours.
Address: 35 The Strand, Russell 0202
Hours: Monday - Sunday 7am–9pm

The Waitangi Treaty Grounds in the Bay of Islands is one of New Zealand’s most significant heritage sites and a must-see for history buffs. It’s the location where the country’s founding document between Māori chiefs and the British Crown was signed in 1840. You can visit the Treaty House (where the document was actually penned), and a carved meeting house that was built for the treaty’s centenary in 1940 (as was Ngātokimatawhaorua — the largest Māori war canoe in the country — which is displayed in the treaty grounds). The excellent visitor centre offers a range of multi-media displays.

In this video we chat with Culture North tour guide Kena Alexander about the site and the significance of the treaty signing.
