WEST AUCKLAND NZ - The Magnificent Waitakere Ranges (Mercer Bay + Karekare) | NEW ZEALAND

This was the last vlog we made shortly before Auckland went into lockdown again. The Waitakere Ranges is a regional park out in West Auckland that includes more than 16,000 hectares of native rainforests and beautiful coastline as well as stunning secluded treasures like Karekare waterfall and Karekare beach.

Our first stop of the day though was to fuel up at Jemima's Kitchen with some scrumptious toasties. Jemima's throwback (Peter's toastie) is a finalist in The Great New Zealand Toastie Takeover competition and we hope Jemima takes out the winner's top spot :) FYI, Jemima's Kitchen is the last food stop before Piha if you're headed out to West Auckland.

Jemima's Kitchen
Address: 470 West Coast Road, Glen Eden, Auckland 0602
Hours: Sunday - Monday: CLOSED
Tuesday - Friday: 09:30 - 17:00
Saturday 09:30 - 15:00

==UPDATE== unfortunately Jemima has had to close up her kitchen since.

Next we made a short stop off at Arataki Visitor Centre which is a really cool spot to get some sweet views of the Waitakere Ranges, learn about NZ's wilderness, plants and creatures, pick up some souvenirs and also see some interesting displays. The Arataki Vistor Centre is basically your gateaway to the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park with friendly staff there to help recommend great walks and sights to check out in the area.

Arataki Visitor Centre
Address: 300 Scenic Drive, Oratia, Waitakere 0604
Hours: The Arataki Visitor Centre is open 9am to 5pm every day except Christmas day.

Thanks to Joss who works at the Arataki Visitor Centre and Kevin (one of our viewers that we happened to bump into there on the day!) we were recommended the Mercer Bay Loop walk. This was on our list of places we thought we would check out but it was great to have it confirmed as a must-see by them too. It was a wonderful walk where we could see the spectacular West Auckland coastline with the likes of Piha beach too.

Mercer Bay Loop Walk
Address: Log Race Road, Auckland 0772

After our hike through Mercer Bay, we took a short drive over to Karekare. From the carpark it's a short walk to both Karekare waterfall and Karekare beach. The two are in opposite directions and secluded away. Well worth checking out when you're out in West Auckland for more scenic sights. Karekare beach is a gorgeous black sand beach (close to popular Piha beach) and it was lovely going in winter since the sand was soft and warm to cool (not hot like it would be in summer due the high iron content from its volcanic origin).

Karekare Falls
Address: Huia, Auckland 0772

Karekare Beach
Address: 2 Karekare Road, Auckland 0772

With both Karekare falls and Karekare beach being in close proximity to each other, it's worth checking the two out while you're there. Be sure to stay for the sunset! It's amazing from the top of the sand dunes.

3 FREE MUST DO Activities in Waitomo, NEW ZEALAND | NZ Travel Vlog 1 of 3

It's road trip time again! This is a 3 part series from Waitomo to New Plymouth in the Taranaki region of New Zealand. In this first vlog, we're in the Waitomo District which is most famous for its glow worm caves however on this trip we visited three hidden free attractions in the Waitomo area - after grabbing some lunch first! ????

It was a 2 hour + drive from Auckland to Waitomo. We had lunch at Huhu Cafe which was very tasty and satisfying. It was definitely a great start to our time in Waitomo before we headed out to do our activities.

Huhu Cafe
Address: 10 Waitomo Caves Road, Waitomo 3943
Hours: Mon–Sun 12–8pm

The 3 free activities/attractions were:

1. Mangapohue Natural Bridge
The entire way leading up to the Natural Bridge felt like a magical hidden gem. An enchanting natural wonder. We did the walking loop through the farmlands too but if you just want to see the Mangapohue Natural Bridge, that alone is definitely worth the visit. The natural bridge is the remnants of an ancient limestone cave system. Getting to the base of the viewing platform is wheelchair friendly so anyone can enjoy this captivating unique part of New Zealand. Apparently at night you can see glow worms!

2. Marokopa Falls
A fierce and ferocious waterfall made even more spectacular by a beautiful little rainbow off on its side when we visited that day. Marokopa Falls is a short scenic drive from Waitomo Caves. After a nice short stroll through a native forest you get an incredible dramatic view of this secret hidden waterfall. There's a viewing platform to soak in and appreciate the beauty of this truly magnificent NZ waterfall.

3. Piripiri Cave Walk
Go prepared with a torch (flash light) or your mobile phone torch light when visiting Piripiri Cave. Piripiri Cave is one of the few free caves open to the general public in the Waitomo area. Most of the Waitomo caves are paid attractions with a variety of activities you can do inside them. However Piripiri Cave simply requires a short bush walk followed by a staircase down to the bottom viewing platform where you get to marvel at the size and formations inside the cave. Be careful though, it can be a bit slippery so watch your footing!

These 3 free Waitomo attractions are all in very close driving proximity to each other too which makes it a great sightseeing day of low effort and high reward activities that can be enjoyed by solo travelers and families alike.

Our accommodation for the night was in Otorohanga - Chris and Dave's B&B. We met Chris who was a warm, friendly and welcoming host. Their B&B was very clean, comfy and cosy with ample parking space inside their property. We booked their place via Booking.com.

???????? Waitakere Ranges, New Zealand - Nueva Zelanda

Today's episode Ruben Alonso travels to Waitakere Ranges, a nature reserve about 40 kilometers from Auckland. There are many natural attractions that this reserve of over more than 16,000 hectares offers, but we will visit the Kite Kite waterfalls and Piha Beach.

To reach the Kitekite waterfalls, you must go through a disinfection process first, because they're obsessed with biological contamination in Oceania. Once your shoes are free of threats, we'll take a 45-minute walk on a delightful wooded path to reach this small piece of paradise - the Kitekite waterfall.

And we can't leave the Waitakere Ranges reserve without going to Piha beach, an ideal place to contemplate the immense beauty of New Zealand.

If you are coming from Auckland CBD, it will take about 40 minutes to the Te Henga Walkway carpark found just opposite the Lake Wainamu Car park. The Te Henga Walkway, between Bethells and Muriwai, is part of the Hillary Trail named after Sir Edmund Hilary, which connects a number of existing tracks in the Waitakere Ranges

This hiking track can be divided into 3 parts:
From the entry to O'Neill Bay: 2.1 km / 40 min one way
From the entry to to Raetahinga Point: 4.1 km / 1 hr 20 min one way
From the entry to Constable Road: 10.3 km / 3 hr 20 min one way

We only got to O' Neill's Bay as it was scorching hot summer day on the day we went. The view was so stunning though and it was truly worth the hike! We will definitely be back to complete the track!
