20220813 Travel Talk Series- MADAGASCAR by Mr. Vincent WONG (part 1)

Countries in Pictures – Travel Talk Series

Traveling to world’s ancient countries through talks and rich collections of pictures

MADAGASCAR by Mr. Vincent WONG

Following the breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana, Madagascar split from the India Peninsula around 88 million years ago, allowing native animals and plants to evolve in isolation under a very diversified geological and climatic environment. Consequently, it has become a biodiversity hotspot with 250,000 species of plant and animal, over 90% of which cannot be found anywhere else on earth. Unfortunately, the island’s complex ecosystems and unique wildlife are now seriously under threat due to local human activities as well as global climate change, which will require much political will and commitment from the government as well as international communities to overcome.

Testimonials from participants of previous travel talks and study tours led by Vincent:

“I have learnt a lot on this subject!”

“Very comprehensive indeed. Thanks!”

“Very useful guide for my future trip!”

”Now what I have seen makes much more sense. Thank you!”

Madagascar: Analakely market (Antananarivo)

Walking through the market where you can see local prices for fruits, vegetables, bread and meat.

An ice cream stick sells for $0.10, mangos for $0.10 per kg ($0.05 per lbd)

About me:

My notes about Madagascar:

Madagascar, 8th poorest country.
What makes a country poor?
Mismanagement (same for unsuccessful companies).

Contributing factors:
Education investment (%GDP): 2.8
Fertility rate (children born/woman): 4.45 (bad, the US is 2.06)
Literacy rate (age 15 and over can read and write): 64.5% (bad, the US is 99%)
Population below poverty line: 50% ( bad, the US is 15%)
Distribution of income (Gini index): 47 ( not that bad, the US is 45)

Deciding factors:
1975: Admiral Didier Ratsiraka adopts Soviet- style ideology and severs ties with France, leading to economic decline.
2001 election contested nearly causing secession of half of the country.
2006: victory in free and fair elections. Foreign investment and trade opens. World Bank forgives debt. Roads paved. Prosperity begins

Madagascar-tourism
One of the most pleasant and charming countries you'll ever visit (LP)

Wonderful country and people. The capital is safe (more so that most other cities of similar size). Great value (food, hotel).

James Cameron built the first Christian temple and the first Western-style school in Madagascar. He employed and educated 600 young Malagasy in the construction of machinery and other public works projects. Also he introduced brick-making in 1826, a technology that was later to be used in a new Malagasy architectural style that was widely adopted throughout the Highlands of Madagascar.
