Volkach mit seinen vielen mittelalterlichen Sehenswürdigkeiten ist eines der bekanntesten Ausflugsziele in Unterfranken. Die Stadt liegt im fränkischen Weinbaugebiet direkt an der bekannten Mainschleife mit der 750 ha großen Weininsel, die mit Tausenden Rebstöcken bepflanzt und von einem Wanderwegenetz durchzogen ist.
Rund um den Volkacher Marktplatz gibt es eine Vielzahl historischer Bauten wie das 1544 erbaute Rathaus zu sehen. Besonderheiten hier sind die beidseitige Außentreppe und der Verkünd-Erker. Das Rathaus wurde für Versammlungen, Gericht und Handel genutzt. Im Zentrum des Marktplatzes steht der über 500 Jahre alte Brunnen mit einer Marienskulptur.
Das markante Fachwerkhaus am Markt aus dem 16. Jahrhundert war ursprünglich eine Färberei, ehe es 1892 zum Gasthof umgebaut wurde. Ein weiteres prachtvolles Gebäude ist die im Rokokostil erbaute alte Würzburger Amtskellerei. Repräsentativ sind auch das Schelfenhaus in der gleichnamigen Gasse und die schönen Bürgerhäuser aus unterschiedlichen Epochen rund um den Marktplatz.
Wenige Meter weiter ragt der 54 m hohe Kirchturm der im 18. Jahrhundert erbauten Kirche Sankt Bartholomäus über den Stadtkern. Die reichhaltige Innenausstattung mit prachtvollen Barockaltären und Deckengemälden ist absolut sehenswert.
Von der alten Stadtbefestigung sind noch das Obere und das Untere Tor vorhanden. Beide wurden im 13. Jahrhundert erbaut und später erweitert.
Zu den beliebten Ausflugszielen rund um Volkach zählen die Vogelsburg, die Hallburg und die Wallfahrtskirche Maria im Weingarten. Die heutige Wallfahrtskirche hoch oben auf dem Bergrücken wurde im 15. Jahrhundert im spätgotischen Stil erbaut. Die „Maria im Rosengarten“ wurde vom Meisterschnitzer Tilman Riemenschneider geschaffen. Die heute komplett sanierte und bewirtete Vogelsburg steht auf den Resten einer prähistorischen Wehranlage und bietet vom Biergarten einen herrlichen Blick auf die Mainschleife. Auch die Hallburg bietet eine Aussenbewirtschaffung. Von der einst großen Burganlage sind nur noch das Wohnhaus, der Bergfried und eine Kapelle erhalten.
Das reizvolle Ambiente von Volkach ist die Grundlage für den kleinen bedeutenden Wein- und Touristenort in Unterfranken. Eine breit gestreute Gastronomie mit der beliebten fränkischen Küche und dem guten Wein führen jährlich zu über 100 000 Übernachtungen. Auch die gesamte Umgebung der Mainschleife mit Orten wie Sommerach und Nordheim mit der Weininsel im Zentrum tragen zur Beliebtheit der Region bei. Bestens ausgeschilderte Rad- und Wanderwegen in einer reizvollen Landschaft tun ein übriges dazu.

???? Mainradweg Etappe 3
Vom Campingplatz in Sand am Main starten wir zur 3. Etappe auf dem MainRadweg. Nach wenigen Kilometer erreichen wir Zeil am Main. Der Mainradweg führt weiter entlang der B 26 nach Haßfurt. In Haßfurt treffen wir auf die Ritterkapelle, die älteste Wallfahrtskirche im Bistum Würzburg. Von Haßfurt fahren wir vorbei an Wülflingen, Obertheres, Untertheres, der Schleuse Ottendorf, Gädheim, Schonungen, Mainberg und kommen nach Schweinfurt. Da Schweinfurt auch die Stadt der Industrie genannt wird, findet man einige industrie- und technikgeschichtliche Denkmäler entlang der Gutermann Promenade. Wir radeln weiter durch die Mainwiesen in Richtung Bergrheinfeld. Der Radweg führt nach Bergrheinfeld. Am linken Mainufer erkennen wir das Kernkraftwerk Grafenrheinfeld. Wir durchqueren Garstadt in Richtung Wipfeld. In Wipfeld werden wir mit der Fähre ans andere Mainufer setzen. An der nächsten Kreuzung machen wir einen Abstecher zum nahegelegenen Kloster St. Ludwig. Zuerst war St. Ludwig ein Kurbad, das sogenannte Ludwigsbad. Später gründeten die Benediktiner hier ein Kloster und heute befindet sich dort das Antonia-Werr-Zentrum, eine Jugendhilfeeinrichtung.
Auf dem straßenbegleitenden Radweg fahren wir entlang der Kreisstraße in Richtung Stammheim. Unmittelbar am Radweg befindet sich das Museum für Militär- und Zeitgeschichte.
An den Hängen wachsen die besten Trauben im Fränkischen Weinland, denn wir befinden uns an der Volkacher Mainschleife, die für den Weinbauanbau bekannt ist. Sie erstreckt sich rund 20 km lang unterhalb von Wipfeld über Volkach bis nach Schwarzenau. Die Mainschleife ist Teil des Maindreiecks. Das Klima an der Mainschleife begünstigt nicht nur den Weinanbau, sondern auch den Obst- und Gemüseanbau. Die Fährverbindung zwischen Fahr und Untereisenheim, die auch heute noch besteht, gab vermutlich dem Ort seinen Namen Fahr.
Ein besonderer Ort mitten in den Weinbergen ist die Wallfahrtskirche Maria im Weingarten. Berühmtheit hat die Wallfahrtskirche erlangt durch das imposante Schnitzwerk Madonna im Rosenkranz, es war eines der letzten großen Werke von Tilmann Riemenschneider.
Volkach liegt am Scheitelpunkt der Mainschleife. Auf dem Marktplatz in der Altstadt steht das hübsche Rathaus. Es ist ein typisch fränkischer Renaissancebau mit einem hohen Dach und einem Treppengiebel. In den 1950er Jahren wurde der Mainkanal zwischen Volkach und Gerlachshausen erbaut, der die Mainschleife umgeht. Wer die Route verkürzen möchte, kann weiter entlang dem Kanal fahren. In Sommerach trifft die Alternativroute dann wieder auf die Hauptroute.
Wir folgen dem Mainradweg weiter auf der Hauptroute in einem weiten Bogen und erreichen Nordheim. In Nordheim gibt es ebenfalls eine Fährverbindung über den Main und zwar nach Escherndorf mit einer Besonderheit. Denn hier können Heiratswillige den Bund für`s Leben schließen. Weiter geht`s entlang der schönen Weininsel und wir erreichen Sommerach, ein kleiner Winzerort an der südlichen Mainschleife.
An der Mündung der Schwarzach entstand 788 eines der ältesten Klöster Frankens, die Benediktinerabtei Münsterschwarzach.
Von Schwarzach fahren wir zum Ortsteil Schwarzeau und übernachten auf dem „Camp Mainblick“.
