JAJCE & VISOKO | Hidden Gems of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Welcome back to another travel vlog through Bosnia! In this vlog we are exploring
Jajce and Visoko.

The first stop on our road trip was in the quaint city of Visoko. We went to this town to see a cluster of natural hills that have been claimed to be the largest human-made ancient pyramids on earth. We enjoyed hiking to the top and taking in the amazing views of the city.

The next day, we left Visoko and drove to a beautiful town called Jajce. Jajce is home to a gorgeous waterfall that cascades down into the very heart of the city. There are many things to do in Jajce such as hiking up to the fortress, visiting Pliva lakes, exploring the catacombs, and eating your way through the beautiful Old Town. We took advantage and did it all!

10 Things to do in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina Travel Guide Video Transcript: (Мостар)

Welcome to Mostar! In today’s video we’re showing you around one of the great gems of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mostar was one of the many stops of our travels through the Balkans, but it ranked right at the very top! This city is as postcard-perfect as they come, complete with Ottoman constructions, soaring minarets, and colourful buildings that overlook the emerald waters of the Neretva River. Our time here was spent wandering through the markets, sampling local dishes, and visiting a few mosques and museums along the way, so come and join us in this travel guide as we show you around Mostar (Мостар) and give you a few ideas for your own trip!

This street is lined with restaurants, cafes, and hotels, but as you approach the famed Old Bridge, it turns into a bit of a bazaar with small shops that are bursting at the seams with souvenirs.

Stari Most, also known as the Old Bridge, which is the city’s main landmark. This 16th-century Ottoman bridge joins the two parts of the city across the River Neretva.

And that’s a wrap for Mostar! This was one of our favourite destinations of 2017.

With its Ottoman architectural wonders, delicious dishes served in heaping platters, and warm locals who take hospitality to a whole new level, there’s a lot to love about the city! Mostar is strikingly beautiful, but it’s the people who give the place its soul.

Yes, the city’s been through a lot, and it still bears the scars of a horrible war fought in the 90s, but Mostar has picked itself up and is showing visitors all it has to offer.

We hope you enjoyed getting to experience this city through our eyes on this travel guide, and as always, if you have any other suggestions of things to do in Mostar, feel free to share your tips with travellers in the comments below.

Platz Nr. 1️⃣ SARAJEVO

Top things to see & do in SARAJEVO, Bosnia & Herzegovina!!

Join us as we continue our Balkans road trip and explore the beautiful city of Sarajevo!

The first stop on our road trip was the small town of Jablanica. This small town is well known for its roasted lamb and we were recommended to stop there by a few locals. This town is also home to a Unesco site, the Bridge on the Neretva. This bridge is dedicated to a famous WW2 battle and definitely worth a stop!

We continued on and made it to Sarajevo. Sarajevo is the capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. On our first day exploring the city we drove up Mount Trebivic, visited an abandoned bob sled track from the 1984 Olympics, and an old observatory tower. Afterwards, we headed back down into town to do a walking tour of the city.

Sarajevo offers several free walking tours of the city. We choose the walking tour called “War scars & new times. This war tour covers many important sights like Sniper Alley, Sarajevo Roses, The Children Memorial, and Markale Market. We were so impressed by this tour and would recommend it when visiting the city. You can find the link to this tour here :

We spent our last day in Sarajevo walking the old town, trying Bosnian coffee, and visiting the eclectic bar called Zlatna Ribica.

5 places to discover in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The picturesque land of Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in the heart of Southeastern Europe and this is an excellent starting point for exploration of the whole region.
Filled with green landscapes, high mountains and historical sites, these are just some of the things which this country has to offer.
Tour Guide Mostar counts down five places you must discover in Bosnia and Herzegovina…
1. Sarajevo
Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a compact city on the Miljacka River, surrounded by the Dinaric Alps. Its center has museums commemorating local history, including Sarajevo 1878–1918, which covers the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, an event that sparked World War I. Landmarks of the old quarter, Baščaršija, include the Ottoman-era Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque.

2. Mostar
Mostar is a city in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, straddling the Neretva River. It’s known for the iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge), a reconstructed medieval arched bridge. The nearby alleys are full of shops and market stalls, and the Old Bridge Museum explores the bridge’s long history. A narrow staircase leads up to the Koski Mehmed-Pasha Mosque’s minaret for panoramic city views.

3. Blagaj
One of the magical places that take us back to the past is Blagaj, situated only 12 km away from Mostar.
The small and magical village of Blagaj is located on the river Buna. The Buna spring is one of the largest and most beautiful springs in Europe and probably the best example of underground karst river.
The beautiful scenery and rich history had been home of dervish house which is one of the most important monuments from the period of early Ottoman culture in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Dervishes are known for their special rituals performed and are still performed – zikir (praise to God). The Turkish sultan was delighted with Buna and so he ordered to build Tekke, the monastery of dervishes.

4. Počitelj
The historic town of Počitelj which is located on the left bank of the river Neretva, on the main Mostar to Metković road, to the south of Mostar, in the territory of Čapljina Municipality.
Back in the the middle ages, Počitelj was centre of governance and its westernmost point, which gave it major strategic importance. It is supposed that the fortified town and its attendant settlements were built by Bosnia’s King Stjepan Tvrtko I in 1383.
The walled town of Počitelj evolved over the period from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. Architecturally, the surviving stone-built parts of the town are a fortified complex, in which two stages of evolution may be observed: mediaeval, and Ottoman.

5. Međugorje
Međugorje is a town located in the Herzegovina region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, around 25 km (16 mi) southwest of Mostar and close to the border of Croatia. The town is part of the municipality of Čitluk. Since 1981, it has become a popular site of Catholic pilgrimage due to reports of alleged apparitions of the Virgin Mary to six local children.

Trip to Piramids in Bosnia Visoko 2010

Is Pyramid in Bosnia is a true pyramid or regular mountain of a strange shape? At the top of the mountain, yes you can find the remains of old buildings. But the pyramid ... I do not think

Best Cities in the World to Visit: Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina

In a world that never ceases to amaze me, I found myself in awe of Mostar. One who thinks of this city may be familiar with its unfortunate past but one visiting today may come away with so much more. In today’s video, I want to tell you about Bosnia & Herzegovina’s, Mostar and why I think it would be a shame for anyone to not experience this stoically charming city in the future.

When looking up Mostar, you may be greeted with the magical images of Stari Most - the 16th Century Ottoman bridge that was rebuilt in the early 2000’s. Digging a little deeper, and you’ll likely learn of a city that was forever impacted in the early to mid 1990’s during the Siege of Mostar fought during the Bosnian War. Yet walking around in 2023, it’s a city that’s been rebuilt by the amazing people who never stopped calling this part of the world their home, but a grittiness remains that serves as a reminder to not have history repeat itself either.

For anyone planning to visit, housing will likely be your most expensive cost, but fortunately in Mostar, there shouldn’t be a problem having affordable options. Prices could range from as low as $10 dollars a night generally offered as homestays via popular apps such as Booking.com or Airbnb. These prices could also be found nearby Mostar’s Old Town which serves as an incredible value considering most activities to do will likely be found here as well.

But speaking of things to do, it would be like visiting visiting NYC and not heading to Central Park, but Mostar’s Old Town is worth the trip alone. One coming here will have options such as free walking tours, that always serve as a great primer of a new neighborhood, and one with as most history as Mostar only makes this more fitting. Mentioned earlier but Stari Most or also known as Mostar Bridge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to the effort to rebuild it in 2004. Depending on the day or time visiting, you may also find professional divers checking this location off their bucket list as people plunge into the water for spectators to see. I will note that this isn’t for the faint of heart as it takes incredible skill for one to attempt this but if you’re like me and happy staying dry, a slowly building crowd near the center of the bridge generally indicates one is preparing to make their own leap.

As the Old Town of Mostar does serve as relatively small, getting around could be as easy as walking but the options for bicycles, scooters and cars are also generally used by locals and visitors alike. For farther commutes, busses, trains and taxis are also an option for visiting nearby cities of Mostar. There’s also an airport that’s served the city and country for international transport since 1984 to accommodate the influx of travelers visiting nearby Sarajevo during the Winter Olympics.

This brings up the topic of currency. The Bosnian Mark is the currency of choice here and despite the occasional option to pay with credit cards, cash will likely be the easiest form of payment used during your visit.

Due to the location of B&H, Mostar also serves to be a fairly diverse city with people also coming from nearby countries such as Croatia and Serbia. You’ll likely meet people of all ages that have called Mostar home their whole lives, but tourists like myself are also sprinkled in here and there too.

Food is something that will never be challenging to find and furthermore, even harder to be disappointed by. As Mostar lacks many fast food chains that are common in the west, instead you’re greeted with more local options that lean heavier on the meat side versus vegetarian dishes. Meals per person were generally about 6 to 7 dollars but fortunately, the portion sizes were almost always generous. This made it common to have a meal, and not even think about food for at least several hours later.

Safety

Regarding safety, despite what this city has gone through, I never felt uncomfortable at any point in time. The grittiness of the past could be seen on some older buildings through shelling marks and the occasional murals seen throughout as well. But one thing I could say without question, is that some of the kindest people I’ve ever met were people who called Mostar home, and I’m confident most will experience the same exact thing.

It’s easy to talk about a city with such a storied past as if it’s’ still that same place. Terrible things happened here not very long ago, but Mostar is a city that’s worked hard to move forward, without necessarily forgetting what was. There are books, articles and anything you could think of to tell you what took place here in the 90’s, but I hope this video showed that Mostar is so much more than this. It’s a city where people are proud to call Mostar home. It’s a city that has incredible food as well as thoughtful and kind people. Mostar is a city that I fully intend to return to one day for all the reasons I spoke to today. I loved my time in Mostar, and I hope this video showed why.

Bosnia & Herzegovina - EP. #14 Bosnian Pyramids of Sun Visoko from Indiana Jones Movie

Visoko, around 35 kilometres north of Bosnia’s capital Sarajevo, is the site of a cluster of hills that it is often said look like pyramids.

Many locals claim, however, that it’s more than just a passing resemblance.

For people like Semir Osmanagić, the hills are actually the largest man-made pyramids.

The Pyramids of Bosnia & Herzegovina - Ravne Tunnels

What are the Ravne tunnels all about?!?

1500 meters of underground tunnels has been excavated by Dr Semir Osmagic and his team about 3 km for the pyramid we saw in the last episode

These tunnels are at least 12 000 years old and were completely filled with loose gravel about 5000 years ago. It was first believed to be natural caves, but as the team was clearing more and more lose gravel, using only shovels and wheelbarrows, strange things started showing up.

As we will see, there are sever alartificially made ceramic rocks in here that are just full of mysteries. Some point in the direction of the pyramid, anotherone have cracks in it, that coincide with water running 22 meters below it, and they are all a composite of clay, dirt an water baked at over 1000 celcius.

The air is super fresh with perfect oxygen levels and filled with abnormal ammounts of negative ions. There is also water in here with som pretty astounding qualities! Many mean it has helaling qualaties and there have been plenty of scientifical analasys and measurments made on all of these things!

Our guide, Amelia, said this was going to be the purest air we would breath today. Placebo or not, it felt so comfortable to be in here! Not only the air, but we all felt fresh and alert in general! We also totally lost trak of time and it never felt more natural to be present in the moment.

A we walked even further into the tunnels Amelia told us they were hoping the tunnels would lead them underneath the pyramids, so maybe they would find something there to explain why all all the tunnels had been filled with gravel and closed 5000 years ago
