Town of Vinkovci | Continental Croatia | Destination Guide
The City of Vinkovci is located in the furthermost northeast of Croatia, between rivers Danube and Sava, situated along the river Bosut. The City and its environs are positioned at 78-125 metres above sea-level, covering the area of 102,805 hectares, of which 60,623 are arable lands, and 29,149 hectares are predominantly oak and ash forests, with mild continental climate.
It extends along the Bosut valley, the highway and the railway, which connect the Western Europe with the Far East, and the Middle Europe with the exit to the Adriatic sea. The City has significant and high-quality natural resources as well as developed infrastructure, and it is through this that one may notice that it is an economically and strategically important part of Croatia. All of this resulted in the traditional agricultural/cattle-raising production and developed forestry, the development of industry and trade, and lastly, a very rich traditional culture. The City of Vinkovci boasts much and diverse international cooperation. The beginning of the international cooperation dates from the period of the former Municipality of Vinkovci, before the War of Independence, when the relations with the Ohrid Municipality were established and maintained. The period of a more intensive development of international cooperation began during the War of Independence, when the City of Vinkovci was aided by many friends from abroad, through various humanitarian actions.
Following the end of the destructions of war and the War of Independence itself, the cooperation between the City of Vinkovci and the cities Camponogara in Italy and Kenzingen in Germany was formalized through the signing of a cooperation treaty. A very intensive and excellent cooperation with the City of Široki Brijeg in Bosnia and Herzegovina is maintained. Additionally, in recent years the international cooperation has been established with neighbours from Hungary, the Budapest district - Kobanaya.

Grad Vinkovci | Komadić Raja Hrvatske
Vinkovci se nalaze na najsjevernijem meandru Bosuta, čija je lijeva obala, nadmorske visine od oko 88 metara, bila zaštićena od čestih poplava te pogodna za naseljavanje. Zahvaljujući svom povoljnom položaju Vinkovci su bili prostor na kojem su se nasljeđivale kulture od mlađeg kamenog doba do danas. Nije se uvijek živjelo na istim mjestima, ali gledajući današnji raster grada Vinkovci su kontinuirano naseljeni preko 8000 godina. Većina prapovijesnih naselja smjestila se na toj visokoj lijevoj obali, a najveće i najdugotrajnije naselje nastalo je na desnom ušću potoka Ervenice u Bosut, na „Telu Tržnica“.
Prve zajednice zemljoradnika naseljavaju ovo područje negdje oko 6200. g. pr. Krista donoseći keramiku, pripitomljene životinje i biljke.
Colonia Aurelia Cibalae bile su treći najveći grad u provinciji Panoniji Sekundi, koja se protezala na današnjem području Slavonije, Srijema i Baranje, nakon prijestolnice Sirmiuma (S. Mitrovica) i Murse (Osijek). Grad je osnovan početkom prvog stoljeća i polako se razvija u trgovačko i obrtničko središte. Nije nam poznato kako se grad u početku zvao, ali za vrijeme Hadrijana (117.-138.) dobija status municipija (Municipium Aelium Cibalae), a od kraja 2. ili početka 3. stoljeća grad biva uzdignut na rang kolonije. Osnovu gospodarskog razvoja čine poljodjelstvo i keramičarska industrija, o čemu svjedoči preko 80 keramičarskih peći pronađenih do danas. Grad doživljava vrhunac razvoja kroz 4. stoljeće, kada je u gradu i bližoj okolici živjelo između 5 i 10 tisuća stanovnika, a grad se prostirao na površini od oko 550.000 m2. Osim činjenice da su već prvom polovicom 2. stoljeća bile kršćanska biskupija i da su nam poznata imena jednog od biskupa (Euzebije (?-258.)) i jednog od pisara (Polion(?-304.)), najvažniji ljudi rođeni u Cibalama su Valentinijan (364.-375.) i Valens (364.-378.), braća i jedini rimski carevi rođeni na području današnje Hrvatske.
Prijelaz antike prema srednjem vijeku bilježimo pokretnim nalazima i grobovima datiranim u 5. stoljeće, a vežemo ih uz autohtono romanizirano stanovništvo i barbarske federate.
Na 14 pozicija intra muros Cibala istražena su 52 groba s početka srednjeg vijeka.
Doseljenje slavenskih plemena rezultiralo je pomicanjem centra grada prema zapadu. Na položaju Duga ulica 99 istraženo je deset paljevinskih grobova.
Krajem 11. stoljeća na zapadnoj periferiji Cibala osnovano je novo naselje. Žitelji tog naselja podigli su manju crkvu u romaničkom stilu otkrivenu u temeljima. Ta je crkva po svemu sudeći bila posvećena Sv. Iliji. U isto ime, uz južnu stranu male ranoromaničke crkve, nastaje veća gotička župna crkva za koju s potpunom sigurnošću možemo reći kako je nosila naslovnik Sv. Ilije. U više navrata oko ovih dvaju istraženo je ukupno 329 grobova, od kojih većina pripada razdoblju ranog novog vijeka (17.-18. stoljeće). U 19. stoljeću gotička crkva prenamijenjena je u žitno skladište te predstavlja najstariji samostojeći objekt u gradu Vinkovcima.

East Croatia is easily forgotten by many, including tourists and locals. Join us on this trip where we explored the cities of Slavonia. We found many interesting places, such as Croatian Sahara, and magnificent cathedrals. The preserved fortress ruins in different cities brings us back in history. Going up the Vukovar Water Tower taught us a valuable lesson in Croatia's fight for independence and yet enjoy a marvellous view at the same time.
Other than the sights, we share our accommodation and some restaurants where we enjoyed the food.
