La provincia de Barahona tiene muchas playas y rios encantadores, a unos 180 kilómetros de Santo Domingo, la capital de la República Dominicana. Playas de arena gris, guijarros, arena blanca que son frecuentadas principalmente por los lugareños, los habitantes de las provincias vecinas y los habitantes de la capital.
¿Qué se produce en la provincia de Barahona?
Agricultura y la producción de caña, plátanos, café, frutas, sorgo, ñame, yautía y otros, también como la extracción de minerales como Larimar, mármol, yeso, alabastro, kaolinite (para la producción de botellas), sal mineral y materias de construcción, cuentan entre las actividades principales de Barahona.
Ríos en Barahona
El principal río es el Yaque del Sur, que desemboca a pocos kilómetros al norte de la ciudad de Barahona. El segundo río de importancia en la provincia es el Nizaíto. Otros ríos, de corto recorrido, son el Palomino, Bahoruco, San Rafael, Sito y Los Patos. La laguna de Rincón o Cabral es compartida por las provincias Barahona e Independencia. Anteriormente existían las lagunas Caballero y Pescadería pero han sido desecadas ya prácticamente han desaparecido; han sido desecadas para uso agrícola y ganadero
Playas en Barahona
Hay un paisaje maravilloso a lo largo de la carretera 44, en la Costa Azul de Barahona, en la República Dominicana. De un lado la exuberante vegetación de la selva tropical de la Sierra de Bahoruco y del otro las playas de aguas azul turquesa del mar Caribe. Juan Esteban, Bahoruco, Paraíso y Enriquillo son algunos de los pueblos pesqueros que se encuentran en la costa. Las principales playas son la de San Rafael, el Quemaíto, Saladilla, los Patos y Paraíso. La de San Rafael es de las más concurridas. Sus aguas son bravas y los jóvenes se divierten con el ir y venir de sus olas.

La presa de Tavera fue la primera en su género en el país, la misma se utiliza para irrigación, generación de energía eléctrica y el suministro de agua para los acueductos de Santiago y Moca. Después de represar las aguas al río Yaque del Norte, es la principal fuente de abastecimiento de agua para la producción agrícola de los municipios de Navarrete, Villa González y los pueblos de la línea Noroeste, a través de los dos principales canales de riego, como son el Ulises Francisco Espaillat y el Monsieur Bogaert.
El estudio y diseño de la presa de Tavera fueron iniciados en 1966 por la firma alemana Lahmeyer International, que también estuvo a cargo de la supervisión en todo el proceso constructivo.
La construcción de la obra fue iniciada en 1969 por la empresa estadounidense Emkai, y fue inaugurada el 27 de Febrero de 1973, convirtiéndose en el primer gran embalse construido en República Dominicana.
La presa de Tavera está ubicada en el municipio de Jánico. Las aguas del río Yaque del Norte han sido represadas en el poblado de Tavera y el Bao en Sabana Iglesia, inaugurada en 1983.
El embalse de Tavera tiene capacidad para 170 millones de metros cúbicos de agua, estas dos presas tienen una capacidad total de 417 millones de m3 de agua, y se comunican a través de un canal a cielo abierto y mediante un túnel de 4.70 km a la central de Sabana Iglesia de 98 megavatios.
Tiene un muro de contención de 77 metros de altura. Forma un lago de 150 millones de m3 de agua y 7 kms de longitud, tiene seis compuertas de desagüe con capacidad para desfogar mil metros cúbicos por segundo, mas un vertedero de emergencia con una capacidad de siete mil metros cúbicos por segundo.
Y otro vertedero de servicio para desaguar tres mil metros cúbicos por segundo, estos vertederos pueden soportar más de diez mil metros cúbicos por segundo de desfogue. La cota para el vertedero de servicio operar es de 327.50 y la cota para verter agua de emergencia, es de 328.90.
