Ponta Delgada, the capital, is home to the 18th-century City Gates, Gothic St. Sebastian Church and 16th-century Fort of São Brás. The twin crater lakes of Sete Cidades, one green and one blue, lie to the northwest. To the east, Furnas has fumaroles and hot springs.

The bullfights and running of the bulls in the streets are an essential feature of the main festivals of the region, such as the October Fair and the Festival of the Colete Encarnado (Red Waistcoat), which is held every year in June. This is also the region where the legendary Lusitano horse is bred.

Located in the middle of the Atlantic, 1,369 km west of mainland Europe, the Azores archipelago consists of nine islands spread over three groups.
The volcanoes that gave birth to these islands also created small islands or islets, located just off the main coast.
Perhaps the most famous of these small formations is Islet Vila Franca do Campo, located about 500 meters from the coast of São Miguel Island, the largest and most populous island on the Azores archipelago.
The Islet is named after the town of Vila Franca do Campo, the former capital of São Miguel, located opposite the islet.

Vila Franca do Campo displays its municipal motto, Quis sicut deus?, on its flag and on its coat-of-arms. This Latin phrase means Who is like God? It is a reference to St. Michael the Archangel for whom the island of São Miguel is named; in Hebrew, the name, Michael, means he who is like God.
Founded in the middle of the 15th century by Gonçalo Vaz Botelho, the settlement was elevated to the status of vila (town) in 1472; Vila Franca do Campo quickly grew into the largest settlement and administrative seat of the island of São Miguel.

Hi from Sao Miguel!
This is a video about one of my days on Sao Miguel, Azores.
We are hanging out at home and then going to Vila Franca di Campo (there was a purpose and specific reason, however, the result was a fail, everything is explained in the video).
We also decided to get one of the most typical sweets (and one of the best ones as well) here on the Azores. Originally they come from the town of Vila Franca. It's a nice experience to visit the shop you see in the video!
Vila Franca was the former capital of Sao Miguel, however, there was a huge earthquake and the town got destroyed. Then, they rebuilt the town, so it's a very nice seaside town with a port - which we visited!
There is also one thing I recommend you to visit in Vila Franca the place is absolutely charming and perfect for snorkelling.

Vila Franca do Campo, ERMIDA de Nª Sª da PAZ, S Miguel, Açores
A Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Paz localiza-se no alto do Monte de Nª Sª da Paz, no concelho de Vila Franca do Campo. Este templo foi construído em 1764 e classificado de Interesse Público pelo Governo Regional dos Açores desde 1991.
The Chapel of Our Lady of Peace is located on top of the Mount of Nossa Senhora da Paz, in Vila Franca do Campo municipality. This temple was built in 1764 and classified Public Interest by the Regional Government since 1991.

Les plus belles plages des iles des Açores se trouvent, comme on pourrait s'y attendre, sur la cõte sud la plus protegée.
Et la voilá: la Riviera des Açores, la partie de la cóte sud de l'ile de Sao Miguel (Saint Michel) entre Caloura et Ribeira Quente, environ 15 km centrés sur Vila Franca do Campo.
L'eau est à 25 C en Août, et presque toujours si calme que dans une piscine.
Ici, dans une des plus belles plages, il faut prendre une douche sous une chute d'eau les pieds sur le sable de la plage ..
La vue sur cette plage est dominée par une autre cascade ...
... et par l'ilot de Vila Franca do Campo, oú on trouve une autre plage de rêve.
