Vigevano is a town near Milan, in northern Italy. It’s known for the portico-lined Piazza Ducale, dating from 1492. A staircase under the Torre del Bramante tower gives access to the courtyard of Castello Sforzesco.
The vast castle houses several museums, including the Leonardiana, with reproductions of works by Leonardo da Vinci. The town's renowned shoemaking history is highlighted at the Museo della Calzatura.

Top 5 cose da vedere a Vigevano
Piazza Ducale - Piazza Ducale a Vigevano, nel cuore della città, è una delle più famose piazze d'Italia. Venne costruita per volere di Ludovico il Moro su disegno di Leonardo Da Vinci in soli due anni, tra il 1492 ed il 1494 come anticamera del castello divenuto residenza ducale.
Si presenta a pianta rettangolare di 138 metri per 46, con orientamento prevalente nord-ovest/sud-est; è racchiusa su tre lati da edifici porticati omogenei e sul quarto lato dalla facciata della cattedrale. All'angolo sud-ovest si trova la rampa che conduce al cortile del castello passando sotto la torre del Bramante. L'aspetto attuale della piazza è dovuto in buona parte agli interventi del 1680, compiuti dal Vescovo Caramuel e da opere successive.
Torre del Bramante - L'origine della Torre, situata nel punto più alto della città, presso il castello, risale al 1198 e fu terminata dal Bramante alla fine del XV secolo, mentre nel XVII secolo venne aggiunto il cupolino barocco a cipolla in sostituzione dell'originaria guglia conica. La Torre ha una forma originale che, nel '400, fu il modello per la torre del Filarete nel Castello Sforzesco di Milano; è costituita da sezioni che si restringono avvicinandosi alla cima. DaI terrazzi è possibile ammirare un'ottima visuale della Piazza Ducale, del Castello e di tutta la città.
Alta ben 75 metri dal livello della piazza (57 metri dal livello della corte)[6], la Torre del Bramante è l'attuale Torre Civica della città di Vigevano, di cui da sempre è il simbolo. Inoltre con i suoi 57 metri è la struttura più alta della città di Vigevano. è realizzata dalla sovrapposizione di tre piani digradanti verso l'alto. Il primo terrazzo è racchiuso dalla merlatura ghibellina, la sezione superiore accoglie l'orologio, mentre l'ultima, contiene la campana seicentesca. In cima si eleva il belvedere ottagonale di coronamento della torre.
Cattedrale di Sant’Ambrogio - La cattedrale di Sant'Ambrogio o duomo di Vigevano e il principale edificio religioso di Vigevano.
Consacrata il 24 aprile 1612, fu iniziata da Francesco II Sforza nel 1532, su progetto di Antonio da Lonate dopo aver demolito in gran parte quella precedente (della quale fu salvata la parte absidale) risalente alla seconda metà del Trecento, ma edificata su fondamenta ben più antica. Sono presenti infatti documenti del 963 e del 967 che parlano della basilica di Sant'Ambrogio in Vigevano e pertanto le origini della chiesa primitiva affondano a prima dell'anno mille. Del precedente edificio si conservano alcuni frammenti degli archetti decorativi del cornicione di stile gotico-lombardo, appartenenti all'antica basilica. Francesco II morì poco dopo aver intrapreso la costruzione della cattedrale.
Strada Coperta - La “Strada coperta” o “Livello Superiore” è un manufatto unico in tutta l’architettura castellana europea e rappresenta una delle più formidabili opere di ingegneria militare medievale.
La strada coperta, chiamata anche strada serrata o pensile, ha proporzioni gigantesche: è lunga 167 metri e larga 7. Supera un dislivello di 10 metri tra il maschio del Castello e il luogo in cui un tempo sorgeva la Rocca Vecchia, fortilizio affacciato sulle campagna, al limite delle mura.
Fu realizzata nel 1347 da Luchino Visconti per consentire ai signori di Milano di entrare e uscire dal Castello senza essere visti dagli abitanti del borgo, e di fuggire in caso di pericoli incombenti.
E’ una costruzione possente che é rimasta intatta nella sua colossale struttura: i militari vi fecero transitare pesantissimi cingolati fino alla metà degli anni '60 del secolo scorso senza alcun danno per la struttura.
Il Castello Sforzesco - Il Castello Sforzesco è un complesso di edifici della città italiana di Vigevano. Il perimetro si estende su un'area di oltre due ettari, nel punto più alto della città. Il castello si estende su una superficie di 70.000 m² per 5 piani. Ospita la Pinacoteca Casimiro Ottone, il Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Lomellina e il Museo internazionale della calzatura Pietro Bertolini.

A historic art town, it is also renowned for shoemaking and is one of the main centres of Lomellina, a rice-growing agricultural district.
Vigevano received the honorary title of city with a decree of Duke Francis II Sforza on 2 February 1532.
It is famed for its beautiful Renaissance Piazza Ducale in the centre of the town.

Vigevano - Italy Walking Tour
Vigevano is a not well known by tourists, but very charming town in the heart of Lombardy’s Lomellina valley, very near Milan.
It's Piazza Ducale is a jewel of the Italian Renaissance and it’s often said to be Italy’s prettiest piazza, a gorgeous rectangular-shaped piazza surrounded by elegant arcades on three sides and by the town’s Duomo on the fourth side.
It always reminds me of Venice's Piazza San Marco.
Built between 1492 and 1494 at the wishes of Ludovico il Moro, Piazza Ducale was built to add lustre to the town, the antechamber to the entrance of the imposing Visconti-Sforza Castle, one of the largest fortified complexes in Europe.
The group of monuments composed of the Piazza Ducale and the Visconteo-Sforzesco Castle as seen today, is the result of construction works which lasted over two centuries during the reigns of the Visconti and Sforza in Milan.
Not to miss is the great view at the top of the Bramante Tower, the local landmark and one of the gates to the Castle, and a stroll through the impressive Covered Road.
The roofed Road or Strada Coperta is the only example of such a structure existing in the whole of European castle architecture and represents one of the most formidable works of medieval military engineering.
It was built in 1347 by Luchino Visconti to allow the dukes of Milan to enter and exit the Castle without being seen by the inhabitants of the hamlet and to flee in case of looming danger.

Vigevano is very much worth visiting for a day because of its very beautiful, impressive square, la Piazza Ducale. Vigevano is a major center of shoe production. Vigevano is a wealthy town which dates back to the 10th century. There are many shoe-factories in the area.
It has some interesting fortification from the 15/17th century and a beautiful and huge porticos piazza from 1490.

The best way is to take Regional train from Milano San Cristoforo to vigevano. Its just 3 stops. and takes 24 minutes rides.Ticket cost 4.80 euros one way.
