In my opinion Varazdin is the most beautiful and interesting city in Northern Croatia, and it’s definitely worth the visit!

Nowadays, Varazdin is known as the Baroque capital of Croatia. Its economic and political power made it the most significant city in the continental part of the country in the 17th & 18th centuries, and was Croatia’s capital city from 1767-1776.

Unfortunately, in April of 1776, a huge fire took Varazdin by storm and completely destroyed the city, which was the motivating factor of moving the administrative capital to Zagreb, which remains the capital to this day.

An interesting tidbit is that in an effort to help the residents of Varazdin through this time, citizens were exempt from paying tax for several years after the fire.

Today in Varazdin, you can still recognize the beautiful Baroque architecture from the past throughout the “old town” and learn about the (tumultuous at times) history of this unique city.

The most significant and prominent structure in Varazdin is of course, the Old Castle & Fortress (which was historically, the Old Town of Varazdin).

The recognizable high, hilly banks surrounding the fortress were built in the 16th century for protection from the Turks. Inside the fortress is a Renaissance aristocratic palace which is now home to the City Museum of Varazdin.

The main center square in Varazdin is King Tomislav Square, or “Korzo” as it is known. Many of Varazdin’s citizens gather there and have coffee at one of the many cafes that are scattered around.

The central building on the square is the town hall, which was originally built in the 15th century, but was redone in the late 18th century.

Gregory of Nin Statue

Gregory of Nin was a famous Bishop who made reforms in the Catholic Church. He made church services in Croatian (instead of Latin), and opposed the pope on certain issues.

The statue was made by the famous Croatian sculptor, Ivan Mestrovic, and was erected in 1932.

It’s believed that if you rub the statue’s toe, it will bring you good luck. You’ll see that the toe has actually changed colors as a result of everyone trying to rub a little luck into their lives.

It’s a fun monument and iconic figure to learn about and visit.

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

This famous cathedral was built in the mid 17th century by the Jesuit Order (Architect George Malot). It’s not a huge place, but still very beautiful and intricate with its rich baroque decorations and design.

Not only is it a church & cathedral, but it also doubles as a concert hall in Varazdin with its stunning organ, and ability to host an orchestra!

Angels Museum

The Angels Museum in Varazdin is a unique place in Croatia. It’s a themed museum where visitors can meet with angels in various artistic forms. There are statues, paintings, and other fascinating art installations throughout that are very beautiful and intriguing.

There are actually no entrance fees, so you can walk through, admire the beauty for free! They do sell little gifts, though, if you’re looking to pick up some gifts for friends back home.

My personal favorite things to do in Varazdin include walking around the high banks surrounding the castle, stopping for coffee at a cafe, then heading to the craft square to pick up some locally made products!

A day in Varaždin | Continental Croatia

What makes Varaždin special is its unique monumental and historic heritage preserved in the intact and opulent Baroque architecture of the historic City core. Its unique urban identity shows not only the opulent Baroque architecture of the historic core but also the warmth of its squares and romantic streets. The historical City core stages numerous events throughout the year.

You can’t see, feel and experience all that Varaždin has to offer in a day, but love at first sight is guaranteed.

Enjoy the artistic and architectural messages of the past
The preserved baroque historic City core is rich in monuments and art heritage and a walk down the City’s streets reveals numerous palaces, villas and the oldest city hall in Europe.

Varaždin was built over the centuries and different stylistic influences, varying fashions of certain historical periods and wishes of the investors created an interesting and somewhat unusual harmony of flora and fauna, mythical animals and unusual characters built into the facades of the houses and palaces in the historic City core.

If you are a lover of sacral art and architecture, Varaždin reveals to you the richness of its eleven churches, three monasteries and its cathedral. A good guide to this is the ‘The Path of Angels’ Brochure.

Varaždin’s churches are actually the best places to start what is, in many ways, a unique tour of the City. The Tour shows off Varaždin’s Baroque splendour and the Baroque angels are messengers of this splendour.

In addition to the churches, this Central European seductive, playful and historical period will reveal itself to you whilst walking around the historical City core admiring its facades and streets. The charm of a City that has nurtured a pleasant, smart, profound yet cheerful and fun ambience will certainly not leave you indifferent.

The Strossmayer Promenade (the Old Town complex), the Vatroslav Jagić Promenade, the Pope John Paul II Park, the Youth Park and the inevitable Varaždin Cemetery shall be your green intermezzo whilst walking around town.

Test your skill and creativity
Visit the Square of Traditional Crafts, opposite the Ursuline Church. In this corner of Varaždin you can feel the spirit of the City’s traditions and get to know some of its creative skills: at the milliner you can decorate your own hat or buy a new one. A hatter, blacksmith, beekeeper, shoemaker and potter in a historically inspired environment of a small square in front of the Ursuline Church will show you what and how they work. Take a peek into their corners and don’t forget to mint a coin – for good luck!

Varaždin’s everyday life is best experienced on the City market, known as ‘Varaždinski plac’ or you can peek at the intimacy of Varaždin’s backyards and listen briefly to their stories. If your day in Varaždin is a Saturday, be in front of the City Hall at ‘Korzo’ (the main square) at 11 AM when you can see the Ceremonial Exchange of the City Guard known as ‘the Purgars’. On March 23, 2017, the historic unit of the City of Varaždin – Varaždin Citizens’ Guard received a decision of the

A visit to the Permanent Museum Exhibition in the Old Town – the Cultural History Department of the Varaždin City Museum preserves important historical documents, valuable collection of guilds, weapons, stone monuments, glass, ceramics and clocks, whilst a walk through the twenty rooms decorated in different styles of previous periods revives the spirit and the lifestyle of previous centuries.

A visit to the ‘World of Insects’ Entomological Collection – a unique European exhibition in the Hercer Palace, which traces a marvellous aspect of nature

A visit to the Miljenko Stančić Gallery – in the Gallery of this great Croatian artist, for whom Varaždin was ‘his measure and his form’ there are 40 exhibits: paintings, prints and the personal belongings of the artist.

A visit to the Museum of Old Testament and Old Techniques – go back to childhood and remember how did old bicycles, engines, toys, and so on looked like.

A visit to the Museum of Croatian Fireworks – The story of voluntary firefighting in Croatia came from Varaždin, the founding of the First Croatian Voluntary Fire Department in Varaždin in 1864, and the story of fire history is kept in the Museum of Croatian Fire Department.

A visit to the Museum of Angels – after nearly three decades of painting motifs of Baroque angels and artistic work under the banner of ‘Varaždin: the City where Angels Sleep’,

From spring to winter the historic City core becomes the stage for many musicians, actors, performers and artists who invite you to become a part of the City in lot of Varaždin events.

Varaždin County | Croatia | Travel Guide

Varaždin County is located in northwestern Croatia between the Ivančica, Ravna Gora and Kalnik mountains, bordered by the rivers Bednja and Drava. The center of Varaždin County is baroque Varaždin, a city steeped in history and culture.
Varaždin:
Baroque capital of Croatia
Today, in the historical necklace of Central European cities, Varaždin reveals itself to its guests as a rare urban pearl - a city of harmony and intimacy, a city that shows its specific urban identity not only by the enduring beauty of the old baroque architecture, but also by the warmth of its lovely squares, streets and parks, and above all by its wealth—preserved museum collections.

Thus Varaždin preserved some of the essential features of the Croatian Vienna, as a city of baroque, music, and flowers.

Many of today's cultural and historical landmarks of the city bear witness to its rich history of more than eight centuries, where they were lavishly decorated, especially at the end of the 18th century. Century, at its greatest prosperity, was also the capital of Croatia, where many Croatian nobles, landowners, artisans, and artists lived.

As a kind of city museum, but also the modern seat of today's diocese and Varaždin County and the crossroads of the routes from Central Europe to Zagreb and the Adriatic Sea, Varaždin is an attractive tourist destination. In the heart of its ancient city center, every visitor can feel the spirit of past centuries and the beauty of living in our era.

Varaždinske Toplice
Source of health
Varaždinske Toplice is located on the northeastern edge of Hrvatski Zagorje, in the green surroundings of gentle hills dotted with meadows, vineyards, orchards, and forests, just above the valley of the river Benja.

A natural gift - a great source of thermal water - determined the city's location, gave it its name, and conditioned the continuity of people's habitation and treatment throughout all cultural epochs, from the time of the Roman Empire when the Romans gave them the name Aqua Iasae, to the present day, when the spirit of the fashionable health resort is reviving, a modern thermal riviera.

Ivanec:
A city that preserves the memory of the old orders of chivalry
The area next to one big mountain will offer exceptional landscape beauty and memorable attractions. Enjoy a gentle idyll - visit the town of knights of Ivano-Frankivsk
Ivanec and Ivančica, Ivanečko polje or Potok Ivanšček, are just some of the names in the Ivaneč area that still today preserve the eight-century-old memory of the order - Ivanovic.

Beauty head:
Cradle of Croatian culture
Lepoglava is located in an idyllic landscape, at the foot of Mount Ivanščica and by the river Bednja. Lepoglava, often forgotten or little known, is essential for Croatian art, culture, science, history, and religion.

This is largely due to the Paulines, who founded the first Croatian high school in Lepoglava in 1503, and in 1656 the Faculty of Philosophy and then the first Croatian university. In addition, luxurious architectural buildings (parish church, monastery) with richly painted walls and equipment (frescoes, altars, church furniture) were built there, which have been partially preserved to this day.

If you want preserved nature and its untouched beauty, visit the Bednjanski region, located in the northwestern part of Hrvatski Zagorje, at the foot of Ivanščica, Strahinščica, Maceljska, and Ravna Gora.

Vineyards, forests, meadows, orchards, and green hills emphasize the picturesqueness of the region with its specific speech, cultural traditions, and hospitable hosts. If you come to Bednja, be sure to visit the pearl of Hrvatski Zagorje, Trakošćan Castle.

Ludbreg
Miracles and legends at the Center of the World
If you visit Ludbreg, you can say that you are in the center of the world! Here you will discover interesting historical stories about inexplicable miracles, old legends, and ancient vows. Experience a city with a fascinating and mystical history. Come to Ludbreg!

Discover what happened in the chapel of the Ludbreg castle at the beginning of the 15th century and why Ludbreg has been a unique sanctuary recognized by Pope Leo X's bull for centuries.

New Marof
A landscape of artistic inspiration
Experience the vivid landscape painted by our greatest fine artists. Discover old forts and Templar churches, visit intriguing historical sites, and enjoy almost untouched nature and its benefits. Enjoy the landscape of artistic inspiration!

Gornji Kneginec:
The municipality of Gornji Kneginec is located on idyllic hills in the very vicinity of Varaždin, but still far from the everyday hustle and bustle. This area has always attracted lovers of nature, good local cuisine, and even better drops of wine.
