Located in the state of Tamil Nadu, Kodaikanal is one of the most famous honeymoon destinations in India. When you think of Kodaikanal, you think of a wonderful climate, cliffs covered in mist, cloud-capped mountains and beautiful lakes and valleys, and once you visit this hill station, you will find that every bit of what you have imagined it to be is true. Theni western village of Tamil Nadu, a state in Southern India, near the border to Kerala. It is the headquarters of Theni District. It is known for the large-scale trading of garlic, cotton, cardamom, grapes and chilli. Lovily route in Kodaikanal Theni.

Kodaikanal is a hill town in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It’s set in an area of granite cliffs, forested valleys, lakes, waterfalls and grassy hills. At 2,000 meters above sea level, the town centers around man-made, star-shaped Kodaikanal Lake, bordered by evergreen forest. Rowing boats can be hired, and hikers and cyclists follow the 5k Lake Road path around the shore.

Everybody has at one point of time hummed ‘Kanmani anbodu kadhalan. .’ from Kamal Hassan’s critically acclaimed movie ‘Guna’. In addition to the song itself, the song’s location was much talked about which eventually became a tourist favourite.
Following the death of tourists owing to the location’s dangerous setting and lovelorn people resorting to suicide, the cave was closed for tourists about ten years back. However, now the tourism department in response to the requests of tourists have decided to reopen the famous ‘Guna’ cave after 10 years.
Currently, works are ongoing to restructure the way to the cave so that the public could gain entry. It is reported that works are ongoing in the construction of a wooden bridge. The cave is situated about 10 kilometres from the hill sattion of Kodaikanal.
Kodaikanal (Tamil: கொடைக்கானல்) is a city[1] and a Taluk division of Dindigul district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.
The earliest residents of Kodaikanal were the Paliyan tribal people. The earliest specific references to Kodaikanal and the Palani Hills are found in Tamil Sangam literature of the early Christian era.[2]
Modern Kodaikanal was established as a hill station by American missionaries in 1845, as a refuge from the high temperatures and tropical diseases of the plains.[3]
In the 20th century a few elite Indians came to realize the value of this enchanting place and started relocating here. Kodaikanal is sometimes referred to as the Princess of Hill Stations. Much of the local economy is now based on the hospitality industry, serving national and international tourists.[4]
The legacy of this epic Sangam love poetry is maintained by Arulmighu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Thiru Kovil, Palani at The Kurinji Andavar Temple in Kodaikanal. This holy place is famous for the Kurinji flowers which blossom nearby only once every 12 years.
The deity here is called Sri Kurinji Easware. He is in fact Lord Murugan.[11]
Agricultural settlers of the Palani Hills, mainly Mannadiyar (king's servants) caste, were allotted these hill lands about the 14th century by the Madurai Nayak Dynasty, according to some local people[citation needed], though others claim that their ancestors came later as refugees from the Palani foothills who escaped from the invasions of Tippu Sultan.[10]

The district borders the Kerala districts of Pathanamthitta to the south, Kottayam to the southwest, Ernakulam to the northwest and Thrissur to the north and Coimbatore, Dindigul , Thiruppur and Theni Districts in Tamil Nadu to the east. The district is accessible only by road. Rail and airlink is not available. National Highway NH 49 and State highways 13 and 33 passes through the district.

Madurai is one of the many temple towns in the state which is named after the groves, clusters or forests dominated by a particular variety of a tree or shrub and the same variety of tree or shrub sheltering the presiding deity. The region is believed to have been covered with Kadamba forest and hence called Kadambavanam.The city is referred by various names including Madurai, Koodal, Malligai Maanagar, Naanmadakoodal and Thirualavai. The word Madurai may be derived from Madhura (sweetness) arising out of the divine nectar showered on the city by the Hindu god Siva from his matted hair. Another theory is that Madurai is the derivative of the word Marutham, which refers to the type of landscape of the Sangam age. A town in the neighbouring Dindigul district is called Vada Madurai (North Madurai) and another in Sivagangai district is called Manamadurai. The different names by which the city has been referred to historically are listed in the 7th-century poem Thiruvilayaadal Puraanam written by Paranjothi Munivar.[18][19] Vaishnava texts refer to Madurai as the southern Mathura, probably similar to Tenkasi (southern Kashi).
Koodal means an assembly or congregation of scholarly people, referring to the three Tamil Sangams held at Madurai. Naanmadakoodal, meaning the junction of four towers, refers to the four major temples for which Madurai was known for.Tevaram, the 7th- or 8th-century Tamil compositions on Shiva by the three prominent Nayanars (Saivites), namely Appar,Sundarar and Thirugnanasambandar, address the city as Thirualavai.
