The present Tenkasi district was a part of erstwhile Tirunelveli district. Tenkasi district was formed in 2019.
Tenkasi shares its boundaries with Virudhunagar in the North, Thoothukudi in the East, Tirunelveli in the South and Kerala in the West. The district is nourished by two major rivers namely Chittar and Anumanadhi, because of which agriculture flourishes in this area. More than 65% of the population is engaged in agriculture and related activities. Water sources such as Gundar, Adavinayinar, Karupanadhi and Ramanadhi dam along with more than 800 tanks succour irrigation.
The waterfalls formed by the rivers attract a lot of tourists to the district. The famous Coutrallam falls situated in the river Chittar is well known across the state. The water from this falls is believed to have medicinal properties, because of which the falls is considered as a “medical spa”. Among 8 other falls in the district, Peraruvi, Aindharuvi and Puli aruvi are prominent ones.
Tenkasi is known for some of the significant spiritual places in South Tamilnadu. The Kutraleeshwarar temple (Chitra Sabha) is located in Tenkasi. It is one of the five sabhas of Nataraja, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Tamil poet Thirikooda Rasappa Kavirayar describes the imposing beauty of this place in his poem “Kutrala Kuravanji”. The Kasi Viswanathar temple, Sankarankoil temple, Pottalpudur darga, Ilangi Kumarar temple are the spiritual places located here.

We travelled from Tiruvalla to Tenkasi on a pilgrimage trip to Tenkasi Viswanathar Temple . Tenkasi is the Thekkan Kasi or Southern Kasi. It is believed that darsan of Tenkasi Viswanathar Temple is equivalent to visiting Kasi ( Varanasi) Temple. It was a splendid journey , especially, the journey from Thenmala to Tenkasi.This video depicts the enchanting beauty of nature on the way to Tenkasi from Thenmala . It portraits the mesmerising beauty of nature on the way. Also you can see the royal look of the Kasi VISWANATHAR Temple Rajagopuram. The Rajagopuram is built in the Dravidian architecture by the then Pandya king Parakrama pandian after getting the darsan of Kasi VISWANATHAR during his sleep. Kasi VISWANATHAR gave the directions to the king in his dreams.

The temple can be accessed through both steps as well as by side road.The feel that gets through steps is different as compared to the road. The temple is situated in an altitude so it gives as a nice scenic view.The breeze gives freshness and the silent atmosphere makes a better place for meditation.
Superb sceneric places around this area..well maintained neatly by them..You can go by walk through steps for temple & Separate ways for bike ,car but it is chargeable reasonably...Free Restroom available for both men & women & Not too much crowded

The lord Murugan in this temples shrine is called 'Thirumalai kumarasamy' or 'Thirumalai murugan'. Because of the lords name most of the people in this region have the name 'thirumalai'. There is one more goddess temple within this temple, called 'Thirumalai amman'. This hill temple is surrounded by lot of coconut plantations and small villages. Earlier there was no road to connect to the temple which is present on the hill. Devotees reach the dovone shrine by walk. The temple is also famous for its many n umber of steps. It has more than 600 steps. Recently, road was constructed which enables people to go by two and four wheelers till the temple at the top.
Thirumalai Kovil is a Murugan temple situated at Panpoli,[1] Tenkasi taluk, Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, South India. It is about 120 km from Madurai. The temple is situated on a small hill surrounded by the Western Ghats near the border with Kerala.

The popular Tamil song ‘Andang Kaka’ in Shankar’s Anniyan was shot here. Earlier, it was known as Roja para, as a few scenes from the movie were shot on that rock, but its real name is Keelapuliyur para.The art team of Anniyan did this. Tenkasi Kasi Viswanathar Temple - Travel Guide
Tenkasi Kasi Viswanathar temple Kasi Viswanathar Temple Tenkasi - At a distance of 1.5 km from Tenkasi Bus Station, 5 km from Courtallam and 55 km from Tirunelveli, Sri Kasi Viswanathar Temple is one of the main attractions of Tenkasi. Built by the Pandya Kings, the massive gopura of the temple is the second largest in Tamil Nadu. This temple is also known as Ulagamman Temple.
The temple was built by Parakrama Pandyan in Dravidian style. The construction of Rajagopuram was completed in the year 1505. The gopura caught fire in 1824 and was in a bad condition till 1966. Then the renovation began and was completed in the year 1990. The Rajagopuram is 180 feet tall and is a masterpiece of aesthetic beauty. A pathway is also provided up to tower in the 9th tier to have an aerial look of Tenkasi.
The temple is dedicated to Kasi Viswanathar a form of Lord Shiva in a self-incarnated form (swayambu). It is believed that worshipping the Lord in this temple is as equal to worshipping the Lord in Kasi. The consort of Kasi Viswanathar is known as Ullagamman in this temple.
This temple has three shrines - Siva, Amman and Murugan. This temple boasts beautiful sculptures and also has musical stone pillars that produce different sounds when tapped with fingers. There are twin statues of Veerabhadra, Nataraja, Rathi-Manmatha, idols of Thirumal and Kali Devi are wonderfully carved. Name of the town is derived from this temple and known as Kasi of South. The nearby river Chittar is considered equivalent to Ganga. People here believe that those who worship in Tenkasi get the same benefit of worship undertaken in Kasi.

Tenkasi is one of the municipalities in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, India. Tenkasi, South Banaras is also famous for its temple. The story of its temple is narrated in an inscription on a four sided pillar set up in front of the gopuram. It is said that God Viswanatha appeared in the dream of Arikeari Parakrama Pandyan who was living in the fort constructed by him at Vinthankottai which is in the east of Tenkasi the frequently visited Banaras to worship Lord Viswanatha, and Lord ordered him to build a new temple at Tenkasi.The king started the work in 1446 A.D the central shrine, the ardhamantapam and the mahamantapam were finished and the god was established in this shrine. Ten years later the building of the nine stories gopuram began and in six years it was completed. In the same year 1463 A. D the king died. Lord Shiva graces in the temple as a swayambumurthi. Worshipping the Lord in this temple is as equal to worshipping the Lord in Kasi – Varanasi. Presiding deity Lord Kasi Viswanatha is visible to the devotee even from a distance of one Km. The temple is so vastly constructed with this facility to the devotees. While Mother Durga faces South in almost all temples, She faces west in this templ.

The critically and commercially successful Tamil movie Roja, by the acclaimed director Mani Ratnam, was also shot here. About four kilometers before we reach Sundarapandiapuram town, you can see a lot of rocks on the right side. This is called ‘Annyan Para’. Its old name was ‘Puliyur Para’. The popular Tamil song ‘Randaka randaka’ in Shanker’s Tamil movie ‘Annyan’ staring Vikram and Sada was picturised on this rocks along with hundreds of co-dancers. Because of that, this rock became ‘Annyan Para’. Sundarapandiyapuram is home to three important temples. The Sri Meenakshi Sundareshwarar temple dates back to the early 19th century. However, the Rukmani Sathyabama Sameda Sri Rajagopala Swamy temple is the oldest place of worship in the town, purportedly around 4000 years old. Sundarapandipuram also has a Brahmin colony which was a popular setting for many Tamil and Malayalam films. The traditional agrahara with intricate sculptures, complex pillars, colorful kolams and the huge pond will give you a kooky feeling.
