Discover Oita: 15 Best locations and activities

In the south of Japan, on the island of Kyushu lies Oita prefecture. Famous for its many onsens and a thermal pool (Hell of Beppu), Oita is a unique destination. We will help you discover what we believe are the top priorities when visiting. If you love nature and history then the Kunisaki peninsula offers everything you need and more. I have such fond memories of the area and could easily see myself retiring there. But of course, Oita cannot be limited to Kunisaki. You will see in our video, it has so much to offer!

Note. If you ever visit Oita you have to have Futago-Ji Temple on your list. Make sure to book a table at the restaurant near the temple. There is only one. Order some Toriten, short for Tori Tempura, this is truly AMAZINGLY GOOD!

Note 2: This video replace and fix a previously uploaded glitchy one.

Japan: Oita Trip [Kitsuki & Usuki]

Last month my husband and I took a trip to Oita prefecture, where we explored the cities of Kitsuki and Usuki. Kitsuki had the old, historical slopes and Kitsuki Castle and Usuki offered Rekishi no Michi (Road of History) and Usuki Seki Butsu (The Usuki Stone Buddhas).

Note: I'm sorry for occasional shaking camera and bad sound. My new camera is a lot more sensitive than my old camera when it comes to movement, but the microphone records at low volume. This is things I have to work on for the next videos.

Thank you to all the people who have subscribed lately.

This time, our host visited Kitsuki City in Oita Prefecture.

Kitsuki, nicknamed “Kyushu’s Little Kyoto,” is a castle town full of Edo era charm, including the samurai residences running north and south on the inland high ground, the old stone-paved slopes, and Kitsuki Castle, which stands upon the tip of a cape.

You can see the castle tower of Kitsuki Castle from the top of the Kanjoba-no-Saka Slope, which connects Kitsuki Castle and the Kitadai samurai residences.
On the 24th step from the top is a cobblestone resembling Mt. Fuji - walk slowly while looking down, so you don’t miss it!

Kitsuki was also the first place in Japan to be acknowledged as a “historical townscape perfect for kimono,” which can be found at rental stores to stroll through the spots with Japanese atmosphere in Japanese style.
The view from the castle tower of Kitsuki Castle, which is built upon a small hill, overlooks the beautiful Morie Bay, earning it attention as a photogenic hotspot.

First, our host visited Tomaya Tea House, which was the first-ever tangible cultural property of Japan registered in the city for being a definitive Kitsuki-style merchant home with white walls, a tiled roof, an inner parlor, and a courtyard.

While relishing the traditional machiya (townhouse) architectural style, you can purchase from carefully selected tea leaves and tea roasted using over 280-year-old methods, while also joining a matcha experience to learn about the history and etiquette of the tea ceremony, and more!

Next up was a visit to the long-established confectionary store Matsuyamado, founded in 1941.

Using painstakingly sourced local ingredients, the taste of freshly-made treats can be enjoyed, such as Sanman-Nisen Goku, Kitsuki’s famous confection embodying its local history, or the popular Miso Manju, made with miso from time-honored local brewery Ayabe Miso.

Dai no Chaya, located within the Noumi Residence of the historical Kitadai samurai residences, also serves up high-quality Japanese sweets along with the Shokado Bento Box, which is designed to draw out the intrinsic flavors of ingredients, all in a space overflowing with Japanese allure.

We hope this video will inspire you to visit and take a stroll amongst the rich history and culture of the Kitsuki City castle town!

Japan Trip: Usuki Samurai District, Residence Historical Road, Oita36 Moopon

Usuki's samurai district is located at its city center, and parts of it keep the flavor of an old castle town with their stone paved alleys lined by premodern looking houses.

The main attraction is the Nioza Historical Road, a 200 meter photogenic narrow alleyway which runs along temples and residences built in Edo Period style architecture, making a feeling of the past. Parallel to it runs the Haccho Oji Shopping Street, a merchant street with a neighborhood atmosphere, lined by shops selling local specialties, groceries and etc. Walking westwards for about five minutes brings you to Ryugenji, with nice three-storied pagoda.

The Ruins of Usuki Castle
It is located on the eastern side of the district. Currently a neighborhood park is located on the former castle grounds. Unfortunately, most of the castle buildings including the main keep have been destroyed over the years, and today the only prominent structures remaining are a turret and a gate standing along the park's entrance.

Another samurai residence open to public is the Marumo Residence, placed at the southern end of the town center.

Our hosts visited Kani Shoyu Kagiya, Liefde Cafe, Megumi Koubou, and Kabosu Kobo in Usuki City, Oita Prefecture.

Kani Shoyu Kagiya, located in the central Hachooji area near Usuki Castle, is said to be the oldest miso and soy sauce company in Kyushu, boasting a history of over 420 years.

The retro store is imbued with the faint smell of “koji” fermentation mold, and makes one feel like they’ve slipped back in time.
Here you can purchase all kinds of condiments centered around miso and soy sauce.

The store’s flagship Miso Soft Serve Ice Cream flaunts a fantastic combination of fragrant caramel-like miso sauce and miso powder with the mild sweetness of soft serve ice cream, forming an exquisite balance and melts in the mouth.

The crunchy topping adds the finishing touch, ensuring excitement until the very last bite.

Liefde Cafe, which opened in 2021, has a gluten-free menu incorporating plenty of carefully selected local Oita Prefecture vegetables and 100% domestic beef hamburgers.

We also recommend you a glass of refreshing craft kabosu cola, which uses organic, independently grown Usuki kabosu.

At Megumi Koubou, you can enjoy all sorts of products certified as “Usuki no Jimono - Usuki's Local Produce.”

This certification is given to processed food products that strive to be additive-free and use resources and ingredients cultivated as part of the land and natural environment of Usuki, carefully designed with the customer in mind.

Within this lineup is the Summer Kabosu Marmalade, which won the Gold Award at The Dalemain World Marmalade Awards & Festival 2019 in Japan.

Using a rare variety of summer kabosu, it presents a rich fragrance and mellow sourness with little bitterness, making it popular with younger kids.

At Kabosu Kobo, you can relish a variety of sweets made with fully ripe organic Usuki kabosu, which are packed with citric acid and are said to help curb fatigue and aging.

Their original pound cakes made with the juice and every part of the fruit including the skin, and soft serve ice cream using the juice, will invigorate you with pleasant, gentle flavors of kabosu.

We hope this video will inspire you to visit Usuki and taste these amazing bounties that are both good for the body and the planet!

Usuki City, located in southeastern Oita Prefecture, is an old castle town full of evocative streetscapes from the Middle Ages, as well as Stone Age relics, the National Treasure Usuki Stone Buddhas, and other sights. It is easy to reach from neighboring Oita City, making it perfect for a day-trip escapade.

Usukiyaki pottery, which is crafted through traditional techniques in Usuki City, boasts a history stretching back around 200 years to the late Edo Period. It is based on a rare artform that was once lost, and the pieces are lovingly designed as “vessels to frame a meal.” Usukiyaki consists of white porcelain adorned with a “rinka” flower pattern that makes ingredients from the bountiful seas and mountains of Usuki dazzle, while adding flair to the dinner table. Although materials from the past are extremely rare, there is an active effort to promote the appeal of Usukiyaki today.

This time, our host visited Usuki SARAYAMA, a multipurpose complex that offers tableware and food. Our host first had a chat with the owner Mr. Usami to learn more about Usukiyaki.

At Usuki SARAYAMA, visitors can watch the pottery-making process from outside the workshop, and can join Usukiyaki-making experiences using the “katauchi” molding method, as well as “kintsugi” with Usukiyaki. Our host was able to make Usukiyaki pottery using genuine techniques together with a craftsperson in the atelier. His original piece looked fantastic!

While it takes around a month to receive the piece you made, if you opt for the kintsugi experience, you can bring home the pottery you repaired on the day.

The gallery also exhibits new Usukiyaki artworks and more, and you can actually hold the pieces crafted in the workshop and purchase those that catch your eye. Plus, tea and sweets are served in Usukiyaki tableware in the tearoom, offering a full day of fun.

We hope this video inspires you to visit Usuki SARAYAMA to enjoy the beautiful floral creations of Usukiyaki pottery!

Many of the activities promoted by Usuki City align with SDGs*: Sustainable Development Goals, and lots of the businesses based in Usuki City, such as the 100-year-old-plus Fundokin Shoyu Co.,Ltd. and Goto Seika, are striving to achieve SDGs through their own unique initiatives.

*The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

Fundokin Shoyu Co., Ltd. is a long-established soy sauce brewery in Usuki City, which is the prefecture’s largest soy sauce-producing region.*
The soy sauce brewery houses wooden brewing barrels recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest of their kind in the world, which are used to make soy sauce in the traditional way.

They are crafted with wood sourced from Canada, and are better for the environment than stainless steel tanks, while also producing soy sauce with a rich fragrance and mellow flavor thanks to the insulation from outside temperatures through the fine, delicate wood grain.

Our hosts got to try tasting this soy sauce, which has the perfect balance of umami and sweetness, and enjoyed discovering the differences.

Goto Seika, which is celebrating its 103rd anniversary this year, makes confectionery from ingredients with deep roots in the region while incorporating SDGs.

Their most famous item is the Usuki Senbei, which is a cracker made with flour from Oita Prefecture, and a coating of local organic pressed ginger and sugar individually and painstakingly brushed on each cracker by hand using traditional methods.

Moreover, the pomace from the pressed ginger is used to make ginger powder or added to other confections, helping to eliminate food loss.

You can also tour the Goto Seika factory, and watch as the artisans roast the Usuki Senbei and apply the coating individually by hand, making you appreciate just how much effort is going into these creations.

They also hold an Usuki Senbei Making Experience. Your freshly-coated senbei will be put into a box for you to take home as a souvenir - or you can eat it straight away! (Reservation required).

We hope this video will inspire you to visit Usuki City to see how locals protect their traditional manufacturing methods while working towards a sustainable future.
