You CAN walk from US to Russia! The Diomedes, in the Bering Straight Alaska is rarely talked about.

Original vid posted to TikTok: @map_nerd - 20M liked it so figured I'd share with you too!...

You probably know that Alaska and Russia are relatively close – with just the Bering Sea between them, they’re only about 55 miles apart.

But there’s an American town that is much closer, just a couple miles from Russia. And In winter, they can actually walk there, but they don’t… I don’t think.

Diomede is an American town of about 100 people on a small island in the Bering Sea called Little Diomede Island.

It is one of the two Diomede Islands that sit about halfway between mainland Alaska and mainland Russia.

The western island – Big Diomede – is Russian. The eastern island – Little Diomede – is American. They are 2.5 miles apart. The only thing between them is water. In winter, the notoriously cold water freezes up, creating a 2.5 mile ice bridge that’s walkable. (I’m told it takes about a half hour). So technically you CAN walk from the US to Russia.

If you do, you also instantaneously step into the future bc Big Diomede is 21 hours ahead of Little Diomede. The international date line falls right smack between them so you can literally step a whole day ahead.

I like finding interesting things on maps. Hope you do too.

A Glass of Water Saved a Plane And 72 Passengers

The plane had been used for 20 years, but it had never suffered a single accident before, so the cabin crew had no doubts the flight would be easy. Passengers got on board the plane; flight attendants nonchalantly checked their boarding passes; everything went as usual.

But what happened after that was really scary. No electricity onboard, all equipment down, no airport in sight, and only a half-forgotten runway deep in the Siberian snow forest. It’s hard to imagine a worse scenario for a passenger plane landing, so it’s a real miracle that everyone ended up safe and sound. And all of it thanks to… a glass of water.

SUMMARY:
- The plane had been used for 20 years, but it had never suffered a single accident before, so the cabin crew had no doubts the flight would be easy.
- The electronic equipment started acting abnormally, but the pilots shrugged it off as a nuisance and continued the flight. Air traffic control also neglected the problem.
- Just 8 minutes after the announcement, the lights in the cabin went off. Only the flight attendants paid any attention to it, believing everything was alright. In the cockpit, though, the situation immediately became desperate.
- Without the equipment, the plane became crippled. It was still operable, but all the navigational systems refused to work, the radio went offline, and the fuel transfer pumps were also lost.
- Without any means to control the angle at which they descended, they used an old and almost forgotten trick: a glass of water put on the control panel.
- As Captain Novosyolov later said in an interview, it was a pure stroke of luck that they saw a landing strip near the town of Izhma. It was an old airport that had been abandoned for a long time and closed for any aircraft except helicopters.
- Despite the abandonment of the airport, airport supervisor Sergey Sotnikov, of his own will, kept the runway in a good condition for all those years. He cut down the emerging brush, swept away garbage, and even drew the runway marking when it faded.
- Before the last attempt at landing, all passengers and the cabin crew were transferred to the front of the plane to be ready for an emergency evacuation.
- The emergency escape slides were dispatched. And all 72 passengers along with all 9 crew members safely went down to the ground. None of them were even slightly injured.
- The lucky passengers and crew were transported by helicopters to nearby Ukhta, from where they went on to Moscow by another plane, and only one family decided they’d had enough air travel for a lifetime and took a train instead.
- Sergey Novosyolov and his co-pilot Andrey Lamanov were made Heroes of the Russian Federation, while the rest of the cabin crew received the Orders of Courage.
- After that, the aircraft continued performing flights for another 7 years. It received its own nickname, Izhma, and in September 2018 it flew for the last time.

*RARE* Russian Helicopter landing at KDTS

This is the first time I have seen this type of helicopter in person. I'm sorry I do not for sure know the name of this helicopter... This was shot on my iPhone 5 so I apologize about the quality! This helicopter belongs to a contracting company down in Florida. This airport was KDTS, Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport located in the panhandle of Florida. I was very shocked to see this aircraft:) Very cool sight thought. I have a video of flying over the beach and surrounding area coming soon:) So stay tuned!!!! Thanks for watching!

Folgende Termine stehen bereits:
23.09.2022 * Flims (CH) * Discovery Days

11.11.2022 * Dresden * Bergsichten Berg+Outdoor Filmfestival

[EN] Chukotka is the northeasternmost tip of Russia, just across from Alaska. Completely cut off from the rest of the country's road network and under the strict regime of Russian border guards, this part of the planet is harder to travel to than almost any other (well... probably even harder now). For four years I fought for a special permit to finally cross the uninhabited interior of the country from the Kolyma swamps to the Bering Sea with a fatbike and packraft in the summer of 2018. A privilege that was only granted to a few western individual travelers...
Two and a half years ago I had worked out a multimedia presentation for this adventure, which I wanted to present to a wide audience with live lectures, but then Corona came and there were no performances... But now it seems finally time to be able to tell this story - perhaps even more so now, so that people don't forget that behind the political facade of Russia there are still completely normal and likeable crazy people with big hearts!
