Plan your Washington DC trip around these 10 destinations and then map out other places of interest near these sites, and you will end up seeing between 40 and 50 amazing destinations. Practically all are free but may require a timed entry ticket you can easily get on your smartphone.
Our White House tour pass required us contacting our state representative 90 days in advance. Once we were on the list, we had to provide our Social Security number for security clearance. We were notified about 10 days before our trip that were confirmed. It was well worth the wait.
Our US Senate Chamber pass was obtained by contacting our senator the morning of our Capitol tour. A clerk in our Senator’s office brought the pass to the visitor center lobby.
The library of Congress card was issued to us on site after we scanned a QR code at the information desk. It linked us to a form that we filled out to complete the registration process. By having this library card, we had access to all the books of the library and the reading rooms.
Ulysses S. Grant's Home - Galena, IL
This is a video of a tour of Ulysses S. Grant's Home in Galena, IL. The home is a State Historic Park run by the state of Illinois. Grant lived in Galena for a short time before the Civil War and for three years after the war.
Tours of the home are free but a $5 donation is requested. Galena is a small historic town in NW Illinois.
