Lesser known 1260 AD Shankareshvara Temple, Turuvekere , Tumkur district, Karnataka state, India.

The Shankareshvara temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is located at Turuvekere, a small town in the Tumkur district, Karnataka state, India. Turuvekere is located about 77 miles from the state capital Bangalore. The temple was built around 1260 A.D. during the rule of the Hoysala Empire King Narasimha III.

The temple plan is a Bhumija Nagara style (north Indian) on a semi-stellate base (called mula-prasada). The building material is the standard Soap stone and the hall (mantapa) is a closed one.

The temple has all the basic elements of a standard Hoysala temple and comprises a sanctum (garbhagriha) which is connected to a closed hall by a square vestibule (sukhanasi). The entrance into the hall from the outside is through a porch (mukhamantapa).

The porch consists of an awning supported by two decorative half pillars with two parapets on both sides. The shrine has a tower (shikhara). The vestibule has its own tower (also called sukhanasi) which appears like a low extension of the main tower over the shrine.

From the outside, the walls of the vestibule are inconspicuous and appear like a short extension of the shrine wall. The ceiling of the closed hall is supported by four lathe turned pillars. These pillars divide the ceiling into nine highly decorated bays.

The porch with its half pillars also serves the purpose of an open hall with a single bay ceiling. The outer wall of the hall and shrine are articulated with full pilasters. Between full pilasters, turrets and miniature towers on half-pilasters (aedicula) provide a decorative look. Below these, forming the base of the temple, are the six horizontal moldings.

6. The navaranga is divided into nine equal compartments with its central roof supported on the shining lathe-turned pillars. The designs of each ceiling are different with the central one adorned with ashta-dikpala arrangement

Kedareshwara Temple in Nagalapura is known for its beautiful ornate Ceilings of the navaranga, animated friezes, wall sculptures and lathe-turned pillars of the navaranga, which are typical examples of the art and architecture of the Hoysala style.

This temple belongs to the matured Hoysala architectural phase. This phase is distinguished by the series of the bands of the adhisthana of the temple and the eaves over the external wall images.
Both these features are evident in this temple. The arrangement of bands found here, over the adhishthana (platform), is consisted of six separate horizontal friezes. They are, from top, a band of swans, a frieze of makaras with riders on it, empty band intended for Puranic sculptures, scroll-work ,a frieze of horse-men, and a frieze of elephants.

Some of the images on the external walls of the Kedareshwara temple includes Gajasamharamurti, Arjun aiming for fish, three-legged Bhringi, Bhairava, Shiva as Tripurari, Durga, Nrrtti, Uma-Maheshvara, Kamadeva, Mahishasuramardini and Shiva as Tandaveshvara.

The top portion of the outer walls has ornamental pilasters with canopies bearing variegated shikhara. KACHKAL MUNESHWARA KSHETRA / KAUCHKAL BETTA is one of the lesser known places around Tumkur. The place is located close to the famous Shivagange hills and is an excellent place for trekking, biking and driving alike. Just 70 km from Bangalore, this place is really a wonderful short getaway for a weekend. It's a place of historical and spiritual importance. It houses the lord Muneshwara temple in His simplest glory.

As a continuation of my journey to Kauchkal betta, I also visited another historical Eshwara temple at MUDWIRESHWARA SWAMI BETTA. The temple is an experience, not just another temple, with a brilliant back story.

Kachkal betta and Mudvireshwara betta can be combined together in one trip, along with the visit to Shivagange hills.
