New Slains Castle On Visit To Coast Of Aberdeenshire Scotland

Tour Scotland travel video of New Slains Castle on ancestry visit to Aberdeenshire. The 16th Century castle is thought to have inspired the Irish author, Bram Stoker's, Dracula. The Clan Hay were a powerful family in the area for generations, having possessed the lands of Slains since the 14th century. In 1453 Sir William Hay, the clan chief, was made Earl of Erroll by King James II. At this time the local seat of power was Old Slains Castle, near Collieston some five miles to the South West. Francis Hay, 9th Earl of Erroll, succeeded in 1585, and converted to Roman Catholicism. He conspired with other Catholic nobles, including the Earl of Huntly, with whom he joined in a brief rebellion in 1589. Erroll was declared a traitor in 1594, and Old Slains Castle was destroyed in October on the orders of King James VI. Earlier distinguished visitors to the castle include Samuel Johnson and James Boswell on their tour of the Highlands and Islands

Fyvie Castle With Music On History Visit Near Turriff Aberdeenshire Scotland

Tour Scotland 4K travel video, with Scottish music, of the exterior and interior of castle on ancestry, genealogy, family history visit to Fyvie near Turriff in Aberdeenshire. The castle is a magnificent example of Scottish Baronial or Scots Baronial architecture. Buildings in the Scots Baronial style are characterised by elaborate rooflines embellished with conical roofs, tourelles, and battlements with machicolations, often with an asymmetric plan. Popular during the fashion for Romanticism and the Picturesque, Scots Baronial architecture was equivalent to the Jacobethan Revival of 19th century England, and likewise revived the Late Gothic appearance of the fortified domestic architecture of the elites in the Late Middle Ages and the architecture of the Jacobean era. Among architects of the Scots Baronial style in the Victorian era were William Burn and David Bryce. The earliest parts of Fyvie Castle date from the 13th century, some sources claim it was built in 1211 by King William the Lion. Fyvie was the site of an open air court held by Robert the Bruce, and King Charles I lived there as a child. Following the Battle of Otterburn in 1390, it ceased to be a royal stronghold and instead fell into the possession of five successive families; Preston, Meldrum, Seton, Gordon and Leith, each of whom added a new tower to the castle. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

City Walks - Aberdeen Scotland Walking Tour 02 - Virtual walk and Walking Treadmill Video

Aberdeen is known as the Granite City which implies a bleak and grey city. We found it to be absolutely beautiful with lots of great museums, hotels, restaurants, and leafy parks. This walking treadmill video is the second of two around this port city, known for its wealth due to the oil industry. The first treadmill walk explores the main old town and this explores the harbor. The north sea oil fields have been crucial to the modern development of Aberdeen and it's why many of the museums have free entry.
If you want a guided tours of scotland, there are many companies that do that but this is a free walking tour of this lovely city and a great starter if you want to visit Aberdeen. Aberdeen is the city, Aberdeenshire is the large county.
I hope you enjoy this walk. We had a great time in the city and it would be a wonderful place to launch a tour of Scotland.

Achnacarry Castle On Visit To The Highlands Scotland

Tour Scotland travel video, with Scottish music, of Achnacarry Castle on ancestry visit to the Scottish Highlands. This Scottish castle is the ancestral home of the chiefs of Clan Cameron. The original castle was built around 1655 and destroyed after the Battle of Culloden in 1746; The new house shown in the video constructed in Scottish baronial style was built nearby in 1802. The current building and the surrounding estate gained fame as the Commando Training Depot for the Allied Forces from 1942 to 1945. British Commandos, United States Army Rangers and commandos from France, the Netherlands, Norway, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Belgium trained there. The Clan Cameron Museum is located in a cottage on the castle's grounds. Displays include the clan's legends, chiefs, slogans, history, clan lands in Lochaber, and notable clansmen. Other exhibits include the castle and estate's history, the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, and Prince Charles Edward Stuart, known as Bonnie Prince Charlie. A small selection of my personal photographs shot on small group tours of Scotland.

Clan Cameron is a West Highland Scottish clan, with one main branch Lochiel, and numerous cadet branches such as Erracht, Clunes, Glen Nevis, and Fassifern. The Clan Cameron lands are in Lochaber and within their lands is the mountain Ben Nevis which is the highest mountain in the British Isles. In the 14th Century, during the Wars of Scottish Independence, Clan Cameron fought for King Robert the Bruce, led by Chief VII John de Cameron against the English at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Later, the clan, led by Chief VIII John De Cameron, fought at the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333. Clan Cameron was involved in many clan battles mostly against Clan MacKintosh with whom they had an extensive feud which lasted over 350 years: Battle of Drumlui, 1337, A dispute between the Clan MacKintosh and Clan Cameron over land at Glenlui and Loch Arkaig. The Camerons were defeated but started a 350 year feud. Battle of Invernahoven, 1370. Fought between the Clan Cameron and the Chattan Confederation of Clan MacKintosh, Clan Macpherson and Clan Davidson.

The Clan Cameron fought as Jacobites at the Battle of Sheriffmuir in 1715 during the initial early Jacobite uprisings.. They later fought fought at the Battle of Glen Shiel in 1719. Their chief John Cameron of Lochiel, after hiding for a time in the Highlands, made his way back to exile in France.

The Clan Cameron fought on the side of the Jacobites against the British Army at the Battle of Falkirk in 1746 and on the frontline at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. After the Battle of Culloden the chief, Donald Cameron, also known as ‘ Gentle Locheil ’, took refuge in France, where he died in October 1748.

Castle Stuart With Music On History Visit To Moray Scotland

Tour Scotland short 4K travel video clip, with Scottish music, of Castle Stuart, a restored tower house in Moray Region, about 6.5 miles north east of Inverness on ancestry, genealogy, family history visit to the Scottish Highlands. The land the castle was built on was granted to James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray by his half sister, Mary, Queen of Scots, following her return to Scotland in 1561. The successive murders of Stewart and his son in law, James Stewart, 2nd Earl of Moray, meant that the castle was finally completed by his grandson, James Stuart, 3rd Earl of Moray, in 1625. Though the castle initially flourished, it fell into disuse as the fortunes of the House of Stuart sank during the English Civil War and King Charles I was executed. The castle lay derelict for 300 years before being restored. The surname Stuart was an occupational name for a steward, the official in charge of a noble household and its treasury. One common alternate spelling of the name is a result of the influence of Mary, Queen of Scots, who was educated in France, and consequently spelled the name Steuart or Stuart. King Charles I was born in Fife on 19 November 1600, the second son of James VI of Scotland, from 1603 also James I of England, and Anne of Denmark. He became heir to the throne on the death of his brother, Prince Henry, in 1612. He succeeded, as the second Stuart King of Great Britain, in 1625. Charles was also deeply religious. He favoured the high Anglican form of worship, with much ritual, while many of his subjects, particularly in Scotland, wanted plainer forms. Scotland, which Charles had left at the age of 3, returning only for his Scottish coronation in 1633, proved the catalyst for rebellion. Charles's attempt to impose a High Church liturgy and prayer book in Scotland had prompted a riot in 1637 in Edinburgh which escalated into general unrest. Clan Stuart is a Highland Scottish Clan and is a branch of the larger Clan Stewart. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day. Find things to see and do in Scotland where you are always welcome.
