JAPAN FOOD TRAVEL VLOG - AMAZING FARM LUNCH IN TSURUOKA (YAMAGATA PREFECTURE)

I spent a few weeks on a foodie adventure exploring rural Japan. One of the highlights was a visit to Tsuruoka in Yamagata Prefecture. This city has such unique food, food products and cuisine that Tsuruoka is a UNESCO Cultural City of Gastronomy, the only such city in Japan. I highly recommend food travel to Japan, with their excellent train and public transportation system, it's easy to get around.

This food travel vlog shows my farm to table farm lunch at Naa, a farm restaurant in the city of Tsuruoka. The delicious menu features various foods and products grown locally and on the farm itself. Even the rice is grown on the farm. Naa restaurant is part of Omoya Guesthouse which does farm stay experiences. It's a truly amazing way to experience rural Japan. Tsuruoka is about three hours north of Tokyo near Sendai.

For me, the highlight was the pork shabu shabu, grown on the farm. I also loved the homemade raspberry salad dressing served with the salad made from ingredients grown only a few feet away from our lunch table.

Japan's UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy: Culinary Program in Tsuruoka

Japan’s only UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, Tsuruoka’s diverse climate, varied seasonal ingredients, and active agricultural communities have given rise to the Gastronomy Creative Education Trust (G-CET), which creates specialized experiences to encourage sustainable food, local culinary traditions, and biodiversity.

This 2-day culinary program (4 hours per day) in Tsuruoka is specially designed for professional chefs and food connoisseurs with an interest in developing Japanese culinary skills like preservation, fermentation, and utilizing indigenous plants.

The lessons center around Japan’s rich culinary traditions, with a special focus on the local gastronomy of Tsuruoka. An introduction to the culture of Yamabushi (Japanese mountain ascetics) and Shojin Ryori (Japan’s vegetarian Buddhist cuisine) highlight the special connection between nature, food, and spirituality in the region that’s famous for the Dewasanzan pilgrimage.

The workshops also cover topics like preserving fresh fish (utilizing sake lees, miso, etc.) to maintain freshness and comparing various preservation techniques to European practices. Participants can taste various preparations of seasonal fish (fresh, aged 1 day, and aged 2 or more days), use traditional wild plants, make fresh sesame tofu, and prepare dashi (Japanese soup stock), a foundational skill in Japanese cuisine.

The majority of journalists around the world have chosen to develop their subject on controversial and sensational themes: violence, war, crime. But all these facts represent only 1% of our world and its inhabitants, forgetting the remaining 99% of which we never speak.

Tsuruoka Hachimangu - Kanagawa - Japan

Tsurugaoka Hachimangū (鶴岡八幡宮) is the most important Shinto shrine in the city of Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The shrine is at the geographical and cultural center of the city of Kamakura, which has largely grown around it and its 1.8 km approach. It is the venue of many of its most important festivals, and hosts two museums.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangū was for most of its history not only a Hachiman shrine, but also a Tendai Buddhist temple, a fact which explains its general layout, typical of Japanese Buddhist architecture.

At the left of its great stone stairway stood a 1000-year-old ginkgo tree, which was uprooted by a storm in the early hours of March 10, 2010. The shrine is an Important Cultural Property.
