PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO - Welcome to Port of Spain, the Capital of Trinidad and Tobago islands in the Caribbean! I’m so excited to finally be here. So many of you have written to me over the years inviting me to visit for the amazing food and culture, so it’s really an honor to finally be here and to explore the incredible food. Let’s get started eating, we’re jumping straight into a massive 20 hour day of eating local street food!

Huge thank you to #visitTrinidad for inviting me to Trinidad and Tobago and for making this trip happen!

Friends in the video:
Zaak (Foodie Tales with Zaak):
Baidawi (Eatahfood):
David (D’Market Movers):
Brent (Hungry Belly 868):

And here’s everything we did in the video, and all the food we ate:

Central Market - We started off today at the Central Market in Port of Spain, bright and early in the morning before 7 am. And with Baidawi and David, who go to the market every weekend to do their shopping and have breakfast, we were in the right hands. After exploring the market and the amazing produce and ingredients that go into food in Trinidad and Tobago we then headed to the food court for some local fish broth and cow heel soup.

EatAhFood - Baidawi makes fantastic food videos, especially recipes, and so we bought ingredients and headed back to his house to cook Callaloo, an Afro Caribbean food of simmered down taro leaves and pumpkin and coconut milk. It was so good!

Roti - One of the greatest of all Trinidadian foods is roti - different from anywhere else. The rotis are huge and fresh and then stuffed with pumpkin, potato, and curry of your choice. An afternoon bulging roti with Zaak, was absolutely delicious.

Queens Park Savannah - Port of Spain - To continue on with this street food tour in Trinidad and Tobago, we went to Queens Park Savannah for a coconut and then continued on to the evening street food market to sample a bunch of different local foods - everything from doubles to pholourie and roast fish.

Yousef Gyro ( - Trinidad and Tobago is so diverse and there’s even a local Middle Eastern population including Yousef Gyro, owned by descendants of Syrian immigrants. They make all sorts of wraps and gyros and combinations you won’t find anywhere else. This is the ultimate late night food in Trinidad!

Dass Doubles Factory ( - We did have a quick doubles at the street food night market, but we went to Dass Doubles Factory for the real deal late night doubles. They made the barras fresh and load them up with heavy peppa sauce and delicious curry chickpeas.

Hadco Phase II Pan Groove Orchestra Pan Yard ( - Finally to complete this day we were treated to a panyard lime to see the ultimate instrument of Trinidad and Tobago - steel pan! It was so cool to see and an amazing way to wrap up this ultimate street food tour - and they have delicious food!

Again, thank you to everyone who made this video possible and to #visitTrinidad!

15 Caribbean Countries, How Did They Get Their Names? (Part 1)

Do you ever wonder how Caribbean Countries got their names? The origin of a country’s name can tell a lot about the country’s identity, culture, and history and it is even more interesting how the names of countries evolved over the years as these names were twisted, contorted, translated, and misconstrued. Lands were conquered, handed over, and repopulated. In Part 2 of this series, watch How These 11 Caribbean Territories & Departments Got Their Names (Part 2)

Caribbean Coat of Arms And Their Meanings

The national coat of arms of each Caribbean country is a series of elements, organized in distinct oval places on top of each other with the motto of our country that denotes a rebirth of an independent state.

It forms a heraldic achievement and a national emblem that represents the identity of our land and its people and oftentimes symbolizes our source of power, courage, confidence, pride, willpower, and the source and ultimate wholeness of our existence.

Driving around the east coast of the island - Conaree to Saddlers Things to do in St kitts

The day wasn't the best but driving around the island is always relaxing, listening to some tunes and looking at how lucky and wild the island is.Theres not many places left on earth that are this beautiful, and this is definitely an unknown paradise. On this side of the island you can see another island if the sky is clear. It's a lot more windy on this side of the island, maybe due to the Atlantic Ocean. It's more wild than other parts of the island. There's a few hotels on this side of the island too. The beach is more accessible but more dangerous as well, but if you're into surfing then this is a perfect setting, as it always seems to have waves on this side of the island.

In this driving tour we drive through Conaree, Canada, Ski Academy, Keys village, Scab Hermitage Bay, Canyon church of tent meetings, Mountain view/tap bar, Penny's supermarket Cayon, St Mary's Anglican church, Seventh day Adventist church, Gas station, Windsor University school medicine, Otterleys, Otterleys village, Lodge village, Bourryeau, Calvary Baptist church, Fraites and sons bakery, Molineux, Mills estate, Grange Bay, Nicola Town, Mansion, Belle vue, Blackrocks, Saddlers

Monkey hill apartment rentals review Saint Peters Basseterre Parish St kitts

Here's a apartment I stayed at for a couple of weeks. The is a shop away few doors away which is handy, lots of parking space, washer dryer, hot water, microwave, Internet and there was lots of space. There was enough space for 2 couples if you wanted to. To get to Basseterre Town centre it would take 15-20 minutes on the local transport and 10 minutes in car. The areas a bit noisy especially in the morning, someone's always cutting grass early. You get to see the sun rise over the sea, which is a beautiful sight everyday, I did enjoy looking out in the and seeing all the mountains, the sea, the coconut trees and the wild Goat's and pigs walking around. Monkey Hill is a chilled area out of the way, if you want to be up and down to the town, then this isn't the best location, but if you want to get more in St kitts then this is a good starting point.

The Meaning Behind Independent Caribbean Countries Flags

A national flag is an important symbol for most countries, and to better understand a country and its culture, we must examine what the different features of its flag represent for its land, people, and government.

These Caribbean flags, which are made into national icons are more than just a symbol, but a way for each island nation to portray itself to the rest of the world because their design and colors symbolize the country’s identity, values, beliefs, and history in different ways and Hold much significance in the hearts and soul of citizens with the ability to unify their people around common causes that they hold true to themselves.

So what do the flags of each Caribbean country represent? And what are these Symbols?

Cockelshell Beach St Kitts Horseback riding Jan 2011

Horseback riding on Cockelshell Beach in St Kitts Jan 2011 Our normal saftey practices went out the window, no boot, no helmet, stirrups on saddle were broken, but so much fun and the guys running it really love thier horses. This is shot with a Fuji Finepix XP 10 underwater camera. Not the greatest but not bad for a $120 camera.

Indigenous Names of the Caribbean Islands

The Caribbean islands was inhabited by the Amerindians for some 4000 years before the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492. Therefore, of course, they had their own names for the islands.

There were 2 distinct groups.
1) The Arawak’s – Also known as Taino.
2) The Caribs – Also known as the Kalinago

Cuba – Some authors think it was names after the town of Cuba in the Beja in Portugal, but I am almost sure it is a derivation of the indigenous name, Cubao, its way to close for it to be a coincidence. Although the meaning is not sure Cubao may be translated to “Where the fertile land is abundant”.

Jamaica – This one is easy because I think most persons know that the indigenous name for Jamaica is Xaymaca, which of course, Jamaica is derived from. The meaning of Xaymaca is “land of wood and water or land of Springs”

Hispaniola – for those that don’t know, Hispaniola is the name if the whole Island that includes the nations of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. So, the original names might have been Ayiti or Kiskeya, Ayiti of course became Haiti. Ayiti means rough earth or mountainous land. Kiskeya means Mother of all lands.

Puerto Rico – Which means rich Port in Spanish. Indengous name was Boriken which itself means “land of the Valiant and noble Lord”.

Anguilla – which means eel is some form of early Spanish was named Malliouhana by the Taino natives it means Arrow Shaped Sea Serpent because of its shape.

St. Martin – This refers to the entire island, not the different parts as you know St. Martin is shared by the Netherlands and French. The island is named after Saint Martin of Tours because Christopher Columbus named on St. Martin’s Day. 11 November. The original indigenous names where Soualiga or Oualichi which means “land of Salt”.

St. Kitts – Which has a formal name of Saint Christopher Island, Ingenious name was Liamuiga which means “fertile land”

Nevis – Which is derived for the Spanish phrase “Nuestra Senora d las Nieves” meaning Our lady of the Snow”. The Carib name was Oualie, meaning “land of beautiful waters”.

Montserrat – named after the Virgin of Montserrat of Montserrat mountain near Barcelona in Catalonia in Spain. Its Carib name is Alliouagana, which means “land of prickly Bush”.

Barbuda – Which most lightly means “bearded” original Carib name was Wa’omoni meaning “land of Herons or Large birds”

Antigua – ancient in Spanish – original indigenous name is Waladi which mean “land of Fish Oil”

Guadeloupe – named after the Virgin Mary, venerated in the Spanish town of Guadalupe. With the indigenous name being Karuhera. Means “island of beautiful water”

Dominica – named after the Latin word for Sunday after the day Christopher Columbus spotted the island. The Caribs named it Wai'tukubuli which means “Tall as Her Body”

Martinique – The name evolved from the original name giving to it Martinica to Madinina Which mean “island of flowers”. There are claims that Madinina is the Carib name of the island but there is evidence it was also called Jouanacaëra meaning ‘the island of Iguanas

St. Lucia – names after Saint Lucy of Syracuse. The Carib name was Hewanorra meaning “land of the Iguanas

St. Vincent – so named because it is said Columbo “discovered” it on 22 January, the feast day of Saint Vincent of Saragossa. The Carib name is Hairouna meaning “land of the blessed.”

Grenada – Not totally sure the original of name Grenada, one theory is it names after the town of Granada in Spain. The indigenous name is Chamerhogue, but I could not find the meaning of this word.

Barbados – Derived from the Spanish word Los Barbados, meaning “the bearded ones”. The indigenous name is Ichirouganaim with possible translations meaning Red land with white teeth” or just “teeth” about the coral Reefs.

Tobago – Which has no other recorded name other than that of Tobago which means tobacco pipe. It can be indigenous as the word for Tobacco has roots in native Taino/Carib languages.

Trinidad – So named because the full Spanish name was “Isla de la Trinidad” which means the island of the Trinity”. The original Indigenous name was said to be Iëre meaning “land of the Hummingbird” but it has been accepted that that was a corruption of the Awarak work Kairi which mean simple “island”.
