Vancouver Island combines large forests, rugged landscapes, rocky mountain peaks, and mysterious coastlines. After living in this beautiful place for a combined 10 years, we’ll break down the 10 MOST INCREDIBLE places you have to visit on Vancouver Island (footage accumulated over the years):
10. Cameron Lake & Cathedral Grove
These are located near each other in central Vancouver Island, sitting between Parksville and Port Alberni. Cameron lake is a tranquil spot on the island with many other natural attractions in the area. Witness the old-growth giant trees at Cathedral Grove and more.
9. Goldstream Provincial Park
Located right outside of Victoria, Goldstream Provincial Park is a great spot for hiking, camping and connecting with nature. Explore the beautiful “Niagara” waterfall or do a challenging hike to the neighboring peak of Mount Finlayson.

8. Victoria
Sitting on the southern end, Victoria is the most popular and accessible destination on Vancouver Island. Within a 20-minute driving radius of the city, there are tons of things to do in Victoria. You can choose to explore the British colonial Downtown on foot, take a tour to the magnificent Butchart Gardens, see the stunning Hatley Castle, or explore the wildlife on a whale watching tour.

The fishing village of Port Renfrew is another place you cannot miss on Vancouver Island! Also called Wild Renfrew, this area is known for its ancient rainforest, world-class hiking trails, and its stunning beaches.

Cowichan Valley is another unique place to visit on Vancouver Island. Activities to enjoy here include hiking or biking Mount Tzouhalem, sipping wine at one of the idyllic vineyards, exploring the largest totem pole collection in Duncan, and seeing the sea lions in Cowichan Bay.
5. Lake Cowichan
Lake Cowichan is another amazing travel destination worth mentioning on its own. This freshwater lake is about 30 km or 18.6mi long and sits to the west of Duncan, in the Cowichan Valley.
4. Shawnigan Lake
Located about 40km north of Victoria at the southern edge of the Cowichan Valley, Shawnigan Lake is a popular place to vacation. The lake is 7km long and great for fishing, swimming, and sunbathing in the summer. But what we like the most in this area is hiking.

3. Sombrio & Mystic Beach
Mystic Beach has a beautiful waterfall that Cascades into the ocean, whereas Sombrio Beach has the best vibe for beach camping. Sombrio is a popular weekend getaway with friends or family during the summer and also offers some hidden waterfalls of its own.
2. Tofino & Ucluelet
Tofino and Ucluelet are both great destinations to get away and relax in nature on Vancouver Island! There is amazing hiking and surfing, and you will find the sandiest beaches on the island here! Our top pick of beaches include Cox Bay, Mackenzie Beach, Chesterman Beach, Long Beach, and Wickaninnish.

Canada's Top 10 Backpacking Trails!
After digging into the Canadian trail data, here is my top 10 backpacking trips I’m looking at in Canada for my next potential adventure to the great white north. From the lush forests of the West Coast, to the rugged peaks of the Rockies, and the remote wilderness of Atlantic, these trails seem to check every box I’m looking for my next trip.

Here’s my formula used for this list:
Hike-ability – To ensure I have the ideal amount of time to get lost in nature and escape reality, I prefer backpacking trips that last between 3 to 5 days, with 4 being the optimal length. While rating the trails, I considered this timeframe, and the trail that received the highest score was one I could complete in 4 days. Although I primarily used mileage and elevation to determine my ratings, some trails required me to adjust my metric, which made this process a bit time-consuming.
Route Type - Loop trails were ranked the highest because they offer constantly changing scenery and are more convenient logistically. Point-to-point routes were the second-highest, as they also provide a variety of views. Lastly, out and back trails received the lowest marks. While this factor did not carry a lot of weight, it still played a minor role in the rating.
Challenge – I favored a challenging hiking experience over a leisurely stroll, so I gave higher ratings to trails with a higher elevation gain per mile.
Beauty & Accessibility – The beauty of a trail should play a significant factor in my scoring. But how does one measure this? Well, I tried a rather unscientific method: counting the number of photos attached to each trail and comparing them to the others. It's not perfect, but it's a start. In a way, it also reflects how accessible a trail is, which is another important consideration. Since I'm aware of the limitations of this approach, I didn't give it a high weight in my ranking.
Rating – I devised a rating system for each trail by starting with the AllTrails rating score as a baseline. To make it more comprehensive, I scoured the internet for lists of top backpacking destinations, and incorporated their recommendations into my final rating. I want to extend a big thank you to everyone out there who provided such helpful lists.
The Mule Score – For a final rating, I took the top 20 list and started my own digging. And why not? It's not like I have anything better to do. After all, there are only 24 hours in a day, and I'm sure I could spend all of them researching hiking trails. Now, from that research, I added my own subjective score. Afterall, I've hiked a few trails in my day, so that makes me an authority, doesn't it? My score didn't really change the list all that much, but I still feel like I made a valuable contribution to the world of backpacking. Of course, if I had more time, I could have dug even deeper and uncovered some real hidden gems. But, let's be real here, I have a life outside of hiking, you know? I can't spend all my time traipsing through the virtual wilderness doing research. There are important things to do, like binge-watching TV shows and scrolling through social media.

Top 10 Scenic Lookouts near Toronto Ontario | Travel Canada 4K
We know that this might be a little subjective, but this is our top 10 scenic lookouts near Toronto (we consider 4 hours drive a maximum to be considered near).
If you are considering to travel to Canada and visit Ontario or if you are already living here, this list is a must-do.
10. French River Provincial Park. Located 3 hours and a half from Toronto, this lookout offers an amazing view of the Historical French River from a suspension bridge.
9. Dundas Peak. This is the closest to Toronto from this list, located only 1 hour away. Make sure you stop by the charming town of Dundas and also visit Tews Falls.
8. Scenic Caves Suspension Bridge. This lookout offers a magnificent view of Blue Mountain and Georgia Bay.
7. Lookout Trail. Located in Algonquin Park, this is probably the most easily accessible lookouts of the park; it looks spectacular all year round.
6. Track and Tower Trail. Also located in Algonquin Park, this trail is more challenging and requires going uphill for a while, but the view of Cache Lake t the top will leave you speechless.
5. Fire Tower Trail. This one is located in one of the most underrated and beautiful parks in Ontario: Restoule Provincial Park. We have only visited it during the winter, but I can imagine that it must be incredible during the autumn.
4. Indian Head Cove. Located in the Bruce Peninsula, Known erroneously by many as Tobermory, here you will be able to admire many scenic lookouts all around you. Lions Head is a must, but you have to drive 40 minutes from The Grotto.
3. Clifftop Trail. This one is only accessible by boat during the summer, but the yearly wait is worth it to be able to appreciate the beauty of Mazinaw Lake from above. Located inside Bon Echo Provincial Park.
2. Booth's Rock Trail. Located in Algonquin Park, this is our favourite lookout inside this majestic park. It requires a 5.5km hike in total, but you will never forget the view at the top.
1. The Crack. Located inside Killarney Provincial Park, this is our favourite lookout in southern Ontario. The view of La Cloche Mountain Range in the distance and OSA lake are something else. This is not an easy hike and requires sturdy shoes.
The Muskoka region is one of the places to visit in Ontario; here you will also find countless beautiful scenic lookouts. Hiking in Ontario is amazing.
You can go camping in most of these destinations in Canada.

You don't have to be an avid hiker to join our adventures... we take it easy so you can enjoy your surroundings as much as possible!
