Places to see in ( Ramsbottom - UK )

Places to see in ( Ramsbottom - UK )

Ramsbottom is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, Greater Manchester, England. The population at the 2011 census was 17,872. Historically in Lancashire, it is on the River Irwell in the West Pennine Moors, 3.9 miles (6.3 km) north-northwest of Bury, and 12 miles (19 km) north-northwest of Manchester. Its name is believed to derive from Old English ramm and botm, meaning valley of the ram. Its Victorian architecture, Pennine landscape and industrial heritage, including the East Lancashire Railway, contribute to heritage tourism in the town.

The Ramsbottom parish formed in 1844 was a mile and a quarter in length and about three-quarters of a mile in width in the Lower Tottington township in the valley of the River Irwell that extends from Bury to Rossendale. It is bounded to the south by Holcombe Brook and Summerseat; to the north by Edenfield, Irwell Vale, Stubbins and the hamlets of Chatterton and Strongstry; to the west by Holcombe and to the east by Shuttleworth and Turn Village. The area is characterised by its position on the south side of the West Pennine Moors. The high ground rises sharply on either side of the town with Holcombe Moor, Harcles Hill and Bull Hill to the west and Top O' Th' Hoof, Harden Moor, Scout Moor and Whittle Hill to the east.

The railway arrived in Ramsbottom in 1846 when the Manchester, Bury and Rossendale Railway Company built the railway from Bury to a junction with the Manchester and Bolton Railway and extended the line northwards to Rawtenstall and opened a railway station in the town centre. The line between Bury and Rawtenstall remained open to passengers until 1972 and for goods until 1980. This line is used by the East Lancashire Railway, a modern heritage railway which opened in 1987. The district straddles the A676, A56 and B6214 roads with its centre 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Bury, 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Rawtenstall and 6 miles (9.7 km) north east of Bolton. The M66 motorway runs to the east of the town, linking it north to the M65 motorway and south to the M62 motorway and the Manchester Outer Ring Road.

The skyline is dominated by the Peel Monument which stands on Holcombe Moor, a memorial to Sir Robert Peel, the 19th century British Prime Minister and creator of the modern British police force. The tower stands 128 feet (39.0 m) tall on Holcombe Moor. There are spectacular views over West Yorkshire, North Lancashire, Greater Manchester, North Wales and the Lancashire Plain. From the top of the tower it is possible to see Blackpool Tower on a clear day.

Ramsbottom is on the path of the Irwell Sculpture Trail. The Tilted Vase by Edward Allington, a sculpture both classical in shape to reflect the surrounding buildings but apparently bolted together to reflect the old industries, is located in Market Place. This piece of work, weighing around two tons and locally known as the Urn or Urnie, was funded with £250,000 of National Lottery money. Nuttall Park is a large park with facilities for bowls, tennis, football and public events. The park hosts regular fun fairs and family events, and is a popular attraction with locals and tourists alike.

Abandoned Railway Walk, English Countryside 4K

۞
All support is hugely appreciated and it helps me keep the channel going!

No talking, just walking. Exploring the English Countryside. A nice gentle walk along an old disused railway track. Starting in Stockton Brook, going through the tunnel underneath the main road and following it towards Stoke-on-Trent. The line was opened in 1867 and was in use until 1988 connecting Leek to Stoke. Now nature reclaims the land. Do enjoy :)

About Dave's Walks
Hi there, I‘m Dave! I've lived in the English Countryside all my life, and I love it! I enjoy walking, and couldn’t help but notice just how beautiful the UK can be away from the cities. I found myself inspired and decided to get some camera equipment and make some walking videos so I can share my walks of the beautiful countryside with everyone!
I will mainly focus on small towns, villages, picturesque landscapes, rolling hills and mountains, forests and canals, all along the coastlines in England, Scotland, Wales, and who knows maybe one day further afar!

I upload every Sunday 11.45am GMT (3.45am PST) (6.45am EST) (5.15pm IST) (9.15pm ACST)

RAMSBOTTOM Round - including Holcombe, Mount Pleasant, Summerseat and Holcombe Brook.

My Ramsbottom round is a Lancashire amble along old remote roads connecting a number villages. We capture a fairytale landscape, visit an industrial model village, pass through a pre-industrial village, appreciate the preservation society railway stations and lastly relax at the waters edge of Holcombe waterfall.

The walk begins at Holcombe Bottoms as we head upwards on the cobbled road of Old Holcombe Road. At the top of the road we will come across the village with it's collection of old houses and cottages from the 17th and 18th century. As we head of the village we will view the Primary School that was built in 1846 by local voluntary labour quarrying local stone. This school suffered a Zeppelin raid in 1916 and I will share a story related to the death of a bird.

We then descend a very steep hill to Ramsbottom, but before reaching the centre we visit Old Devils Lodge. Here we admire the ducks who we are informed have their own bank account!

At the centre of Ramsbottom we admire the sculpture 'Tilted Vase' and the surrounding shopping area. Onwards and we appreciation the work of the East Railway Preservation Society, who have invested in the reopening of the Ramsbottom station and 12 miles of railway track.

Passing through Nuttall Park we then head up to the ruins of Grants Tower. We stop and admire the view before moving onwards to the old toll road of Bury to Burnley. From here at Nangreaves we enter Mount Pleasant village. This village in Lancashire, was a model industrial village for the local mill which at its peak was exporting quilts to Canada and USA. In 18888 it was one of the first factories in the UK to have electrical lighting. In the woods near the village, we come across little fairer tale model homes where we read a poem by A A Milne.

We cross over the top of the M66 motorway to achieve our ambition of reaching Summerseat station which is another link of the ELR. Here we walk along the platform and consider the history of this railway. We exit into Sumerseat village and head up Robin Road into Holcombe Brook woods. At the waterfall we spend some time on self reflection and we draw our adventure to a close.

I have provided the main landmarks that I have used but a good OS map should be used to confirm the various footpaths and roads. All the land marks are generally well know by the locals and I found all the people I spoke to were willing to help. Also, I came across a number of Village-Link signs on the footpath and these can be used for quite a bit of this route. If you visit their site you can follow various routes that are local to Ramsbottom and some of the other villages mentioned.

This walk is approximately eight and half miles with about 1,100 feet of ascent. Conditions underfoot are generally good as we are doing a lot of walking on old remote roads including a fair amount of cobbled roads. However, we also cross a number of fields and these tend to be quite muddy, especially in winter.

Enjoy the walk, and I am happy to respond to any question or comments.

UK Tour: Brigid Kaelin & Peter Searcy (Volume 2: Manchester!)

Brigid and Peter slowly become acquainted with life in Manchester, England, enjoying an English Breakfast and meeting new friends. They go to their first gig at Hark 2 Towler in Tottington, Bury.

Bury, Lancashire - bits that I remember.

Bury - a town which expanded and grew rapidly in Victorian times - one of the cotton towns of Lancashire - a look at some of the buildings erected in that time and which are still standing - familiar to the over 50's - but often with a change of use, ownership or identity - blending into the new Bury instead of fighting for dominance and recognition in the old.

Find out more at

The Museum of the British Resistance Organisation is housed in associated Quonset (Nissen) Huts adjacent to the 390th Bombardment Group Memorial Air Museum Control tower at Parham Airfield, Suffolk.

The Museum includes a unique and rare collection of exhibits, It is possible to see photographs of the officers and men of the Auxiliary Units, information of their weaponry and original examples of the time pencils, fuses and crimping mechanism of the explosives with which they were familiar.

Other displays include examples of dead-letter boxes and intelligence instruction dossiers employed by the Special Duties Section; and as far as possible practical details of the radio communications network installed by the Royal Corp of Signals.

In 2004 a replica Operational Base (OB) was officially opened by the Museum's patrons, Lord and Lady Ironside. The reconstruction of the under ground OB is based upon an example known to have been at Stratford St Andrew, Suffolk.

Visitors are able to tour this exhibit, it has been brought up to ground level for ease of access and landscaped over, you can appreciate the cramped and dismal conditions that the Auxiliers had to work in.
