I travelled the South Island, New Zealand back in August 2019, and its only now (7th April 2021) that I'm finally uploading this video.

Timaru is more beautiful than we previously anticipated before coming here, and at first, we weren't going to explore it. Then, we changed our minds and stayed another night, which was an eye-opener! Timaru is a port city in the southern Canterbury Region of New Zealand, located 157 km southwest of Christchurch and about 196 km northeast of Dunedin on the eastern Pacific coast of the South Island.

Timaru - The Seaside City with Little Blue Penguins | Canterbury, New Zealand
Timaru is the second largest city in the Canterbury region of New Zealand. It's located about midway between Christchurch and Dunedin, and it's also a convenient stop over on the way to Mt Cook. We stayed in Timaru for 2 nights with the main intention of hoping to see little blue penguins (the world's smallest penguins) who have a colony at Caroline Bay.
We travelled to Timaru from Akaroa and our first stop after the 3 hour journey was to have some lunch. We were craving Indian cuisine and thankfully came across a Punjab Indian restaurant in Timaru's city centre that had friendly service and great food.

Our accommodation in Timaru was a self-contained, very comfortable, well-equipped flat located only a short drive away from Caroline Bay.

We learnt from our friend @LanaTiare that you could see little blue penguins (kororā) in Timaru. The best month to see the little blue penguins in Timaru is apparently November though so we were pretty lucky to spot the two that we did at Marine Parade over at Caroline Bay. They return ashore a after a long day out in the sea (usually after it gets dark) so dress warmly and wait quietly and patiently on the footpath.

Timaru Heart of the South Island - from the Maori word Te Maru ‘place of shelter’ , is a port city in the southern Canterbury region of New Zealand. It's 2 hours drive from Christchurch and 2.5 hours from Dunedin.

A few hours South of our homebase (Storage Yard) Christchurch, is the small city of Timaru. It is a great little oceanside city with the beautiful Caroline Bay as it's crown jewel. During our visit we played some Frisbee Golf on the beach, watched Little Blue Penguins come ashore and took the Drone for a spin around the Blacketts Lighthouse area.
The Cookie Time Factory shop is a must stop on the main road in Templeton heading South from Christchurch, and has heaps of deals on the world famous in New Zealand Cookies!

The Little Blue Penguins come ashore in Caroline Bay around sunset at the South end of the Bay. It is a free public area, and there are even guides to give you information about the penguins.
Blacketts Lighthouse was erected in 1876 and first lit in 1878. Since then it has had 2 moves, finally ending up in its current home above the Benvenue Cliffs north end of Caroline Bay.
Pro-Tip~ Look up Millierose.nz on Instagram, and see what cupcakes she is selling! She creates some insanely delicious cupcakes which she sells in her beautiful boutique kiwiana shop at 10 Church Street. They would have been in the video, but Jamie ate them all.

Unplanned journey to a quiet city of Timaru
We were going south as we journey to a city named Timaru in South Canterbury. It is believed that this quiet city gives a serene quality living for a resident and it also offers some attractions to the visitor. Even though our trip was unplanned we didn't regret this place because its beautiful.

Blue Penguins - Caroline Bay, Timaru, New Zealand
The Penguins live around the Timaru Port and rock areas. At 40cm they are the smallest penguins in the world.
Marine Parade is 1st left at the bottom of the Loop road and is lit by the Port security lights, travel along the road past the skating rink and camper van park and look for a “penguin crossing” road sign.
It’s a good place to watch. Just remember it is beside the road to the end of the western extension (called the North Mole) so be aware of traffic movement after dark and other penguin watchers.
Now, we have a sign board beside the footpath telling you all about the Penguins. They nest amongst the rocks and come ashore after sunset, so dress warmly and wait quietly on the footpath.
Please do not try to get close to the Penguins or stop them coming ashore.
If you arrive after dark and some have already arrived, you may hear them before you see them as they make a lot of noise. They can be little chatterboxes. Walk, look and talk quietly.
NOTE: Penguins are upset by “Flash” photography.
The little Blue Penguins need your help. Their numbers are declining. You can help by
*Keeping your dog at home during chick raising season.
*Keeping your dog under effective control at all times.
*Staying of the rocks where penguins nest.
*Staying on the footpath, keeping clear of penguins, allowing them to return home for the night.
*Give them space on the sand to land on the beach and walk up to their nests.
A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF A PENGUIN
January to Mid-July

They hang around Caroline Bay nightly, but during the day can swim up to 25km from the coast.

The male arrives early to get the nest burrow ready and attract his mate

Two eggs are laid. They take 5 weeks to hatch. Both parents take turns sitting on the eggs and then feed the babies. Adults swap duties after sunset.

Makeover time
Adults eat lots to gain weight before molting. (Losing their feathers). They cannot go to sea without their waterproof feathers. So they stay on land and don’t feed and look very scruffy. They are vulnerable at this stage.
We expect you to enjoy your time with the Penguins and have lots of fun watching them.

The City of Christchurch is the gateway to the South Island of New Zealand, and two hours south along State Highway 1 is the city of Timaru. On this trip I spent an amazing 48 hours exploring the coast city of the Central South Island, and my suggestion to any visitor … MUST VISIT! South Coast New Zealand Road Trip | Timaru to Dunedin | Our favourite South Island city? | NZ Vlog 6
Hello everyone and welcome back to Putting Down Routes! We're Tom and Emma on a huge journey across New Zealand, and we're so excited to share this part of our road trip with you!
In this Vlog we head down the South East Coast towards Dunedin (which spoiler alert, we LOVED!) from Timaru. We see some gorgeous sights on the way including the Elephant Rocks, Oamaru's Historical Victorian Town, the Moeraki Boulders and Karitane and it's Penisula. We try to inform you of each of the place's history and/or it's geological profile(!) as well as hopefully give you some laughs along the way!
