Would you try THIS too? | How Russians spend winter in the COLDEST places of the country

Well, not everyone swims in ice water, of course. However, lots of people love diving in an ice hole or winter swimming in Russia as it is considered good for your health. This activity becomes especially popular on January 19th on the Epiphany Day. Epiphany is one of the main Orthodox holidays celebrated across Russia. The weather during this time of the year is usually very harsh, but according to tradition, the night before the Epiphany and during the entire day people dive into an ice hole called that is usually made in the form of the Holy Cross. Russians dive in the water 3 times as they believe that the water is holy this day and it washes all their sins away.

Kadykchan - the Largest Ghost Town in Eastern Russia

Kadykchan is a depopulated urban locality of Magadan Region, Russia.
It was built by GULAG prisoners during World War II for the purposes of coal extraction. Coal was used mainly at a local electric power station, which supplied electricity to 2/3 of the Magadan region. In the late eighties, more than 10 thousand people lived there. Life was in full swing: shops, restaurants, a cinema, a House of Culture, a bathhouse worked. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, coal mining in the area became increasingly unprofitable.
Discover this abandoned ghost town in Kolyma region on the border of the famous Road of Bones, Magadan Oblast, in the far east of Russia!

Exploring Vorkuta - Russian Ghost Town in Arctic | The Most Depressing Town in Russia

Despite the richest coal deposits that gave boost to the development of the city, Vorkuta and the adjacent settlements are rapidly emptying today. The mega project of the Soviet machine was not in demand among the heirs of the empire. Today, some districts of Vorkuta and surrounding villages are abandoned or are about to be completely deserted. How is Vorkuta living today? What's going on around her? What are the prospects for the main coal mining region in the north of Russia? I personally went to the Arctic to answer these questions.

Journey from Yakutsk, The Coldest City in The World, to Lena Pillars

The next episode of the journey around Far East of Russia in 2021 is devoted to Yakutsk, the coldest city in the world, and Lena Pillars - one of the greatest landmark of the Yakutia, which is also known to be the largest country subdivision with the square of 3083523 km² (1190555 mi²). Everything seems to be the most in this remote part of Russia. The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) has dozens of incredible landmarks, and one of the most recognizable place of interest is Lena Pillars - rock formation on the bank of the Lena River. Having explored Yakutsk, I hitchhiked all the way to Lena Pillars, using boats at some stretches. Enjoy!

A trip up the Lena River from the Tiksi to Yakutsk.

Our trip up the river Lena was held from 20 to 25 September 2015. The motor ship «Mechanic Kulibin is the only passenger ship that comes to Tiksi from Yakutsk. During the summer navigation, the ship does about 4-5 voyages to Tiksi and is a vital means of transportation for the residents of the small Arctic villages scattered along the banks of the great river.
Our team of marine scientists has undertook this trip after finalising the expedition in the Laptev and Kara Seas. This could happen thanks to the lucky coincidence of completion of our marine expedition with the arrival of the motor ship Mechanic Kulibin to the Tiksi port, where we also completed our oceanographic expeditions Kara-Laptev summer 2015 on board of r/v Victor Buynitsky.

The most wonderful place in the Arctic. Lena River.

On the edge - this short video is an invitation to watch the film The Land of the Disappearing Islands, which I shot with my Estonian friends in 2010. Then we climbed into one of the most amazing places in the north of Siberia, which has no analogues in the entire Arctic. To get a little idea of what the Lena River Delta is like, open Google maps and look at this wonderful creation of nature. This ideally flat world, like a giant web, is woven with hundreds of islands separated by intricate labyrinths of water channels. Wherever you look to the horizon, a perfectly flat tundra stretches, there is not a soul around, no roads, no villages, wild animals are everywhere and a constant wind, from which there is no shelter anywhere. Here is the realm of wild nature and the best place for survival is not found.
