This time around, I boarded a train towards Inverness, the capital city of the Highlands. Inverness is actually one of seven cities in Scotland and is Scotland's most northern city.
I then continued my train for 360 miles from Inverness to the northernmost train station in the UK, Thurso. This scenic Far North Line journey took me along the northeast coast of Scotland, along towns and villages, lochs and castles.
I then took another ferry crossing the Pentland Firth, a strait lying between mainland Scotland and the Orkney archipelago, which has some of the fastest tides in the world. The ferry was heading towards Stromness, where the coast of Norway is closer than London.

ABOUT ME:
I started solo travelling in 2013 and left Indonesia in 2016 to pursue full-time travelling while at the same time documenting my journey as I explore different cultures as a solo female traveller.

Having initially travelled for 5 months throughout Asia, I moved to China in January 2017 for an English teaching job, which was my first experience living abroad.

Since leaving China in 2018, I have taken the move to become a full-time YouTube creator and traveller. I strive to create unique, culture-driven content and capture authentic interactions as I travel.

Thurso Train Trip Pt 1 England Scotland border to Glasgow

I like my longer duration train trips especially in Scotland due to the dramatic scenery the lines pass through. On Tuesday 14th of august 2012, late in the evening, I started out on a journey from North Wales to Thurso, the most northernly town and railway terminus in Scotland.

I was meant to use the overnight sleeper service from London to Inverness, picking it up at Crewe, but Arriva Trains Wales managed to lose me a connection (they'd previously tried to overcharge me £60 too so I bought my tickets direct via Scotrail), so I eventually ended up going via Glasgow to arrive at Thurso three hours later than planned. I returned home on the 18th Aug'.

Thurso, Caithness (Travel Guide): Explore Scotland's Vibrant North Coast Capital #nc500

Thurso is the northernmost town on the British mainland, sitting at the same latitude as Juneau, Alaska. It marks the end of the British rail network and ferries set sail for Orkney from the adjacent harbour at Scrabster. The popularity of the NC 500 route is also attracting more visitors to this friendly town. There are plenty of accommodation options with both historic and chain hotels as well as a large camp site overlooking the beach.

Visitors will find an array of independent shops and cafes. In this film I visit the studio and workshop of Lindsey Gallacher as well as the first arts and crafts market promoted by the Thurso Community Development Trust. Visit the Trust's facebook page to catch up on their programme of events.

The town's name derives from Thor’s river or Bull’s river, depending on which historian you listen to. It lies in the historic county of Caithness, which was settled by the Vikings and has strong ties with Orkney across the Pentland Firth.

The oldest surviving building in the town is St Peters church (1125) which is wait for it, almost 900 years old. A truly Viking relic, even older than St Magnus cathedral in Kirkwall, Orkney. It remained in operation until 1832 when it was replaced by the handsome form of the church of St Peter and St Andrew. The grid pattern of central Thurso was laid out in the 19th century and the town then changed little until its population nearly doubled in the 1950s when the nearby Dounreay poor station was opened. It is now in the decommissioning process but remains an important local employer.

The swells of the Pentland Firth have made Thurso the Surfing capital of Scotland, holding the Scottish, British and European surfing championships. The views from the town beach, towards Dunnet Head and Hoy are stunning.

The adjacent village of Scrabster is the embarkation point for the Northlink ferry to Orkney as well as being a busy commercial link with the distant Faroe Islands and Iceland and a thriving fishing harbour. Not surprising you can be very well fed in Scrabster (I go there regularly)!

Is Thurso worth visiting? A popular Google question. Answer: Yes (watch the film!)

Please subscribe to the channel. I'm going to enjoy a dram of Wolfburn!

Thurso (northernmost city of Scotland)

Thurso is Scotland's most northerly town, and home to the country's most northerly railway station. Located on the north coast of Caithness, its seaward views are dominated by the distant cliffs of Dunnet Head to the north east, and those of the island of Hoy, one of the Orkney Islands, to the north.

Modern Thurso tends to be seen as a stepping stone en route to somewhere else rather than as a destination in its own right, although in recent years the sometimes turbulent seas of the Pentland Firth have led to the town becoming an unlikely focus for fans of surfing from all over the world.

Thurso's origins are revealed in its name, which comes from the Norse for Thor's River. The Vikings were well established here from as early as the 900s, using the river mouth as a port and a fishing base. After Caithness became more securely part of Scotland in medieval times, Thurso continued to grow around its fishing and trade, in a triangular area formed by the River Thurso to the south east and the shore of Thurso Bay to the north. This area is still known as Old Thurso or the old town.

Thurso is an ancient town. The name comes from the Norse, Thorsa, meaning Thor's River and in Viking times it was an important gateway to the mainland. Much of the economy of Thurso today is tied up with the presence of the Dounreay Nuclear Power Development Establishment, located on the coast eight miles west of the town. Thurso itself has plenty of character, as well as a beach and a castle. In the oldest part of town are the ruins of Old St Peter's Church which dates back to 1220.

Thurso's history stretches back to at least the era of Norse Orcadian rule in Caithness, which ended conclusively in 1266. The town was an important Norse port, and has a later history of trade with ports throughout northern Europe until the 19th century. In 1330 Scotland's standard unit of weight was brought in line with that of Thurso at the decree of King David II, a measure of the town's economic importance. Old St Peter's Kirk is said to date from circa 1220 and the time of Caithness Bishop Gilbert Murray, who died in 1245. Much of the town, however, is a planned 19th-century development. A major expansion occurred in the mid-20th century when the Dounreay nuclear power plant was established at Dounreay,[4] 9 miles (14.5 km) to the west of the town. Within a period of about five years, Thurso's population expanded rapidly, from around 2,500 to about 12,000 between 1955-58, as the nuclear plant attracted skilled migrants from all parts of the United Kingdom. By 1960, it dropped back to around 9,000, after a lot of the initial Dounreay construction crew left the area. Thurso is also the name of the viscountcy held by the Sinclair family in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. The present Viscount Thurso is also the local MP.

Inverness to Thurso - My Unforgettable Trip on the Far North Line with Scotrail.

This has to be right up there with my most memorable rail journeys anywhere. Join me as I take the train from Inverness all the way up to Thurso via the stunning Far North Line. Scotrail really have one of the most scenic, beautiful rail journeys here on the east coast of Scotland with the line skirting lochs, beaches and mountains whilst passing through some of the most remote areas of the British Isles.

I'll show you lots of views from the window, we'll have a look at the train itself, the facilities onboard and, of course, I'll tell you how much it costs and how you can do it yourself. Believe me, it's a trip you'll want to take and I think everyone should do it at least once in their lifetime. It's taken me 55 years!!

Thanks as always guys for taking the time to watch my videos. All likes, comments, subs are massively appreciated and help me along on this journey to bring you everyday travel experiences everyone can have a go at.

Cheers for now.

We FINALLY Became End To Enders: Visiting John O' Groats, Thurso, & More ◆ NORTH COAST 500 [DAY 4]

[Filmed November 19, 2020]

Today’s vlog is the next up in our NC500 Scotland road trip series! It’s Day FOUR!

On this day, we became OFFICIALLY end-to-enders, having finally finished the longest possible drive across Britain from Lands’ End in Cornwall to John O Groats in Scotland!!!

It was so much fun achieving this goal, despite some truly rough weather!

It was also great on this day to go to the most northerly point in Britain (Dunnet Head lighthouse), and also see the coastal town of Thurso!

Hope you enjoy tagging along and braving the 30mph wind gusts with us on this journey! So sorry for the unavoidably windy audio from this day!

Cheers, and happy travels!
