Thurmont Maryland more than a gateway
Thurmont is a historic town that was was founded in 1751 as the Town of Mechanicstown. It is located in the north of Frederick County, only a few minutes from the Pennsylvania border. It has earned the nickname of “Gateway to the Mountains” because it is so close to the Appalachian mountains. Thurmont is close to Catoctin Mountain Park, which contains Camp David, and Cunningham Falls State Park. Thurmont is also home to Catoctin Colorfest, an arts and crafts festival that draws in about 125,000 people each autumn.

This short tour will take you to the two towns in North Central Maryland. Includes some of the interesting things in the area, like the two shrines, the Mount St. Mary's campus, the NETC campus, and the covered bridge. All shots are from New Years Eve of 2021.

Cunningham Falls, Covered Bridge, and BBQ ... an adventure in Thurmont, Maryland
In this episode of Cool Places Across America with C&L, Chuck and Lori along with their rescue dog Leroy go on a roadtrip to Thurmont, Maryland.
First stop is at Cunningham Falls State Park for a hike to Cunningham Falls and then a visit to Hunting Creek Lake. Entry feel into the state park was $5 since we were out-of-state, but there are special rates for military and Maryland residents.
The hike to the falls begins on an easy half-mile long trail called Lower Trail. At the end of this trail are the falls, which are described as the largest cascading waterfall in Maryland. We return from the falls on a more challenging 3/4 mile rocky trail called Cliff Trail.
There are quite a few other trails for hikers in this state park. We only did the waterfall hike, but driving by trailheads for other hikes gave us the impression that there are several popular hikes in the park.

Thurmont is also home to covered bridges, and during our visit to the area we had a chance to find the Roddy Road Covered Bridge. Built in 1856, according to one website this bridge rests just north of Thurmont off of US 15, where Roddy Creek Road meets Roddy Road at Owens Creek. The smallest of the county's covered bridges, Roddy Road is a single-span Kingpost design bridge measuring 40 feet long. Relax with a picnic, go fishing or explore the natural beauty at this park and bridge.

Maybe the highlight of the day was having lunch at Chubby's Barbeque in nearby Emmitsburg. We found this local small business through our Bring Fido app, and as promised, dogs can join guests at picnic tables outside. There are even dog bones and water dishes provided to furry friends. This establishment might not look like much from the outside, and with U.S. Route 15 adjacent to their building, it's easy to speed by. But don't! This is worth a stop. The beef, beans, and cornbread were very good. The BBQ sauce and french fries were excellent.
If barbeque foods are your thing, make sure you stop. Whether you like chicken, pulled pork, or beef, they have it all.

Shortly later we made our final planned stop for Leroy at the Biglerville Dog Park in the Oakside Community Park. Leroy really enjoyed this dog park and was quite playful with other dogs. Frankly, this entire park has a lot to offer. There are plenty of ball fields, trails, and even a pond. Cunningham Falls - McAfee Falls | Thurmont, Maryland | Cunningham Falls State Park
Known locally, as McAfee Falls, after a family of early settlers,[9] 78-foot (24 m) Cunningham Falls was apparently named after a photographer from Pen Mar Park who frequently photographed the falls.
An old homestead can be seen above the falls. There is an abandoned iron mine located in the park in addition to the ruins of the third Catoctin iron furnace, owned and constructed by Jacob Kinkel, in the 1850s-1860s.
