Best 10 Places To Visit In Kent 2023, England

Best 10 Places To Visit In Kent 2023, England
Often referred to as the Garden of England due to its endless acres of orchards and lush gardens, the county of Kent offers no end of fun things to do for those willing to wander a little further off the beaten track.

Not only is Kent well-known for its relatively mild climate, it also boasts some of England's oldest and most important historic attractions. It was in Kent that the Romans launched their invasion of England some 55 years before the birth of Christ, and where, over 500 years later, the Christian faith was first introduced to the island nation. As a result of these events, you'll often find Roman ruins brushing up against important religious sites, as is the case in the cathedral city of Canterbury.

Kent also boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in England. Visit the east coast of Kent, and you'll see the famous White Cliffs of Dover looking out towards neighboring France, visible in the distance. This same coastline is home to some 50 or more Kentish beaches, most of them easy day trips from London.

Places to see in ( Tenterden - UK )

Places to see in ( Tenterden - UK )

Tenterden is a town with a large conservation area in the Ashford District of Kent, England. It stands on the edge of the remnant forest The Weald, overlooking the valley of the River Rother. It was a member of the Cinque Ports Confederation.

Its riverside today is not navigable to large vessels and its status as a wool manufacturing centre has been lost. Tenterden has several voluntary organisations, some of which are listed below, seven large or very old public houses within its area and has long distance walking and cycling routes within its boundaries. The town's name is derived from the Old English Tenet Waraden, meaning a den or forest clearing in the forest which belonged to the men of Thanet.

The first record of dwellings in Tenterden can be found in a charter which mentions that it, as 'Heronden', began to grow from the 14th century around the strong local wool industry. Unlike other such centres in the Weald it had the advantage of access to the sea. Much of what is now Romney Marsh was under water, and ships docked at nearby Smallhythe. Timber from the Wealden forests was used to construct ships, and in 1449 Tenterden was incorporated into the Confederation of Cinque Ports as a limb of Rye. Ships built in the town were then used to help Rye fulfil its quota for the Crown.

In 1903, Tenterden Town railway station was opened. It closed in 1954, but half of it reopened in 1974 as the Kent and East Sussex Railway. The route starts at Tenterden Town Station and finishes at Bodiam station, near Bodiam Castle. The main line track is being extended to Robertsbridge (near Hastings) in East Sussex.

Tenterden is a nodal centre with routes radiating to Rolvenden and Hastings (A28), Wittersham and Rye (B2082), Appledore and New Romney (B2080), Woodchurch and Hamstreet (B2067) and Ashford and Maidstone (A28/A262). Tenterden has no mainline railway station, with the nearest being Headcorn (9 miles) and Ashford International (12 miles).

Tenterden's broad, tree-lined High Street offers a selection of shopping facilities, making the town an important destination for a number of smaller towns and villages in the area. It has a busy town centre which is home to many small boutiques and antique shops, as well as craft shops, book shops and various banks, side by side with larger national retailers. There is also a large Tesco which is accessible to pedestrians from the High Street (and by vehicles from Smallhythe Road), and a Waitrose store accessed by pedestrians from Sayers Lane (with vehicular access from Recreation Ground Road).

( Tenterden - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Tenterden . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Tenterden - UK

Places to see in ( Whitstable - UK )

Whitstable is a seaside town on the north coast of Kent in south-east England, 8 kilometres north of Canterbury and 3 kilometres west of Herne Bay. Whitstable was famous for its 'Native Oysters' which were collected from beds beyond the low water mark from Roman times until the mid-20th century. This is celebrated at the annual Whitstable Oyster Festival.

In 1830, one of the earliest passenger railway services was opened by the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway Company. In 1832, the company built a harbour and extended the line to handle coal and other bulk cargos for the City of Canterbury. The railway has since closed but the harbour still plays an important role in the town's economy.

Whitstable is 3 kilometres (2 mi) west of the seaside town of Herne Bay, 8 kilometres (5 mi) north-east of the town of Faversham and 8 kilometres (5 mi) north of the city of Canterbury; several small villages lie in between. The suburbs/villages of Tankerton, Swalecliffe and Chestfield are at the eastern end of the town, Seasalter at the west, and South Street at the south. Chestfield has its own parish council. An area of protected woodland and grassland called Duncan Down lies to the south-east.

Whitstable railway station is on the Chatham Main Line, which runs between Ramsgate in East Kent and London Victoria. Other stations on this line include Broadstairs, Margate, Herne Bay, Faversham, Gillingham, Rochester and Bromley South.

VISITING KENT, ENGLAND BY CAR ◆ UK TRAVEL VLOG ◆ EYNSFORD, ROCHESTER, AYLESFORD, & DOVER!

[Filmed October 5, 2020] In this vlog, Derek and I take the DLR to London City Airport to retrieve our long-term car rental, and then head out for our first day (of two) exploring Kent!

This video documents Derek’s first time driving on the other side of the road since 2018. We slowly eased our way towards Dover with three fun stops along the way. We had such a fantastic time slowly discovering Kent’s charm, and its beauty exceeded our expectations!

To begin, we visited the town of Eynsford, where we used our English Heritage membership for the first time ever at the ruins of Eynsford Castle. Then, we enjoyed lunch in town at the Castle Hotel, visited Eynsford Bridge, walked along the River Darent, and meandered around the town before heading onwards towards Rochester.

In Rochester, we peeked into Rochester Cathedral, walked the grounds of Rochester Castle, and explored Rochester High Street on foot. We next drove to nearby Aylesford to watch the sunset while overlooking its beautiful old bridge. To conclude the day, we checked into our hotel in Dover, and walked to a restaurant near Dover’s harbor.

It was certainly a full day of exploration around Kent, and I hope you enjoy following along on our adventure! Happy travels!

Places to see in ( Biddenden - UK )

Places to see in ( Biddenden - UK )

Biddenden is a large, mostly agricultural and wooded village and civil parish in the Ashford District of Kent, England. The village lies on the Weald of Kent, some 5 miles north of Tenterden. It was a centre for the Wealden iron industry and also of clothmaking.

All Saints Biddenden is the parish church, built mostly in the 13th century. There was likely an earlier Saxon church here. During the half-century reign of Edward III, Flemish clothworkers were settled in the area. The ready availability of raw materials led to the establishment of a flourishing textile industry for the production of broadcloth. Wealth from this industry built many of the fine houses in town.

An important cottage industry has developed to the west, where numerous vineyards and orchards produce varietal wines, ciders and juices. Biddenden is also the trading name of Biddenden's Cider. Biddenden's Cider is made by Biddenden Vineyards Ltd. whose premises are close to the clustered village centre.

The place name of Biddenden is derived from the Kentish dialect of Old English, meaning Bidda's woodland pasture. It is associated with a man called Bida, was originally Biddingden (c993) Bida + ing + denn, eventually evolving into the current spelling.

In 1100, Mary and Eliza Chulkhurst, a pair of conjoined twins, were supposedly born in the village. The origin of the perpetual charity of Biddenden is celebrated in the village signage of the Biddenden Maids, as they became known. The Biddenden Consolidated Charity provides Biddenden pensioners and widows with bread, cheese, and tea at Easter, a cash payment at Christmas, and distribution of Biddenden cakes.

Biddenden was served for nearly five decades by Biddenden railway station, on the Kent and East Sussex Railway. The station opened on 15 May 1905 and closed on 4 January 1954. Bygone Buses was based in Biddenden during the late 1980s and early 1990s. It was sold to Maidstone & District Motor Services.

Tourism South East Familiarisation Trip

Organised by the regional tourist board, Tourism South East, group tour operators can embark on a planned coach tour of destinations in the South East of England. It's a great way to learn where's good to return with their groups.

This particular 2-day tour took in some of the best attractions in Ashford & Tenterden, in Kent.

To book your place on the tour contact the Group Team at Tourism South East on +44 (0) 23 8062 5516.

Join us on a Kent Road Trip (Cyclists welcome too)

Welcome to our tour around the Kent Countryside on a mini road trip, that could easily be a bike ride.

Using Headcorn as our starting point, we take a quick look around the churchyard, the high street before jumping into the car for the next destination.

Pluckley, Kent's most haunted village, and one of the locations for the '90 TV series 'The Darling Buds of May'. When the ghosts are not wreaking havoc, it's thoroughly beautiful. You might even say 'Perfick'

Then a short hop to the quaint little village of Smarden. It seems soaked in history, and somewhere you may want to stop for refreshments.

Next on the lists is High Halden, with its 13th-century church that's worth checking out.

Then we reach Tenterden, another destination you could choose to base yourself at, especially if you plan to visit the Chapel Down Winery, or if you want to take the steam train to Bodiam. The charming little town boasts many fine restaurants, cafes, bars & tea shops. It's also home to a few antique shops should you want to pick up a memento of your trip.

Next on our list is Rolvenden, with its motor museum, windmill and Oast Houses.

Another stopover is at Benenden, with its huge village green, and the St George's Church at the far end.

The next stop is another potential base in Kent's High Weald. With St Dunstan's Church clock a prototype for Big Ben in London, the whole town has more than a touch of history about it.

We take a quick look at Sissinghurst (note, not the castle - That will come later) before heading onto Biddenden.

The village of Biddenden is small but very beautiful, and a great stopover on your trip. Home to the 12th century Biddenden Maids - co-joined twins born in the village. It has a Michelin starred restaurant, coffee shops, tea rooms and a traditional pub.

We return to Headcorn to complete the loop. We hope you enjoyed the trip and look forward to your comments.
