Kuroshio Market is a maguro theme park where you can sample everything from the famous Wakayama maguro. In the shopping street reminiscent of 1950s Japan, things such as marine products and Wakayama-made sake are sold. You can enjoy sushi, seafood bowls and Wakayama ramen along with a BBQ corner for fresh seafood in the food court. Also very popular are the tuna cutting shows which are held three times a day.

Im ersten Teil unserer #JapanMalAnders Serie zeigt euch Lena
die inspirierendsten Orte fernab der Golden Route in der Präfektur Wakayama.
Erster Stopp der Präfekturen-Reise von Wakayama ist Nachi-Katsuura. Dort findet man nicht nur eine Thunfischauktion, die als Japans einzige mit frischem Thunfisch handelt, sondern auch die bekannte Pilgerroute Kumano Kodo. Um den Pilgertraditionen in Wakayama besonders nahe zu kommen, kann das traditionelle Heian-Kostüm ausgeliehen werden. Die malerische Route ist für jeden traditionsliebenden Reisenden einen Besuch wert und lädt zu einer Auszeit von dem stressigen Alltag ein.
Als Nächstes besucht Lena die heilige Stätte Kumano Nachi-Taisha, wo neben einer der bedeutendsten Shinto-Schreine von Wakayama, der höchste Wasserfall Japans Nashi no Taki bestaunt werden kann. Außerdem befindet sich dort eines der bekanntesten Fotomotive Japans und gehört zu einer der beliebtesten Orte in Wakayama.
Shirahamas Strand in Wakayama ist einer der schönsten Sandstrände Japans und lädt zum Entspannen und Sonnenbaden ein. Nicht weit entfernt befindet sich Sandanbeki, wo eine wunderschöne Aussicht über das Meer erkundet werden kann und beeindruckende Wellen in einer besonderen Höhle bestaunt werden können.
Bei der Umeshu Experience In Minabe kann aus Aprikosen ein leckerer Likör (Umeshu) selbst hergestellt werden. Zusätzlich bietet das Ambiente schmackhafte Aprikosengerichte an, die probiert werden können.
Der Abschluss Lenas Reise durch Wakayama, stellt ein Tempelbesuch und eine Übernachtung in Koyasan dar. Alte Traditionen der Mönche laden zum Verweilen ein und bieten eine ganz außergewöhnliche Erfahrung, die man nicht so schnell vergessen wird.

Continuing our tour in 和歌山県 Wakayama Japan, Will takes a road trip from Osaka and is blown away by its beauty, history, Onsens (Japanese hot spring) and weird and wonderful food. Join him on this 2 part adventure.

Wakayama Prefecture (region) is a four hour stunning drive through beautiful countryside, mountains and long tunnels carved out of the rock. The roads become more narrow and winding as you get further away from the city but are easy and safe to drive. Will hired a car for 4 days from for just over £200.
First stop was at Nachi Falls, with a drop of 133 meters, it is the country's tallest waterfall with single uninterrupted drop. Walking through the primeval forest steeped in spirituality you stand at the bottom of the falls looking up feeling the spray and thundering sound of the water. It's simply stunning! You should also include a short trip to Hiro Shrine, located at the foot of the falls and surrounded by old cedar trees. Built in honor of the waterfall god, it is free to enter the shrine, but you need to pay 300 yen to venture onto the viewing platform.
For those feeling energetic, a 20-minute hike up the steep stone staircase will take you to Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine. From here you can capture the Shrine and Waterfall together for those instagram snaps but also enjoy the amazing views across the valley.
Location of Nachi Falls
Staying in Ryokan and visiting, a traditional Onsen is a must on any Japan trip and Wakayama has them in abundance. WIll, visits a few during his trip. Starting at Iruka Onsen Hotel Seiryuusou where he stayed for 2 nights. Including all meals he paid £206.
Location
Meals are a formal elaborate affair, you can't choose your meals so be prepared for some interesting surprises in your servings. Working out what you have been given is all part of the fun and charm of this type of accommodation.
On site is a cute Mine trolley train. Using the rails that were actually used in the mine in the past, a tunnel about 1km long connects to Hiyu-no-guchi hot spring. There is another Onsen here, and your train ticket includes a dip!

Osa Taiko Drum Performance (the town of Tarui, Gifu prefecture)
For the second Online Japan Folk Festival plus, we are pleased to feature the Osa Taiko Drum Performance from the town of Tarui, Gifu Prefecture, which was appealed at the first Japan Folk Festival at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1995.
This drum performance, which was essential for inviting rain, has become the Japanese traditional performing arts of this region and represents the traditional culture of Gifu prefecture.
Mr. Koji ORITA, advisor of National Theater of Japan introduces the Osa Taiko Drum Performance and its background history.
We hope you will enjoy watching massive drums, Osa Taiko with the powerful sound and the beautiful landscape of the town of Tarui, Gifu prefecture.

2018 Gifu Travel Video (TMV)
Gifu prefecture, north of Nagoya, is situated in a mountainous area of central Japan. The Hida region is surrounded by the both the Hida Mountains, which are referred to as the Northern Alps, and the Kiso Mountains, which are known as the Central Alps in Japan. It’s a gorgeous area far enough from the hustle and bustle of the major cities like Nagoya, Osaka or Tokyo. The prefecture includes the notable cities such as Takayama, Gero, and Shirakawa-go.
In addition, the volcanic activity in the area provides the hot spring water for the Japanese onsens for the Gero, Hirayu, and Okuhida areas. We spent a really long time at the Hirayu-no-mori’s Onsen to take in the hot spring waters and enjoy the local Hida beef. After a long soak in the onsen, it seemed customary to have a glass of Hida milk, plain or COFFEE flavored.
But the mountainous terrain provides some gorgeous scenery in the area. We would have liked to see the Japanese Alps from the Shinhotaka Ropeway. However, Typhoon Jebi knocked out the power to the region. But we got some great drone footage instead.
From Hirayu, you can take a bus to the Kamikochi Chubu Sangaku National Park in Nagano, Japan. People will camp or do a day trip to walk Kamikochi’s many hiking trails that are well maintained. If you come during the right months, you can catch some of the macaque monkeys, snow-capped Hotaka Mountain range from Taisho Pond or Kappa Bridge, or just enjoy the changing colors of the seasons. We would have liked to have seen more but we just didn’t have enough time to take everything in at the park.
We loved the food as well. We stumbled upon a restaurant that only served Unagi (eel) and it was absolutely delicious. Worth a trip but not easy to get to unless you have a car.
There is plenty to do and see in the Hirayu area. We wish we could have seen more but that means we will need to come back again to experience more of what Hirayu has to offer.
Attractions:
Kamikochi Chubu Sangaku National Park in Nagano, Japan
Check out Kappa bridge, Taisho Pond, and go for a hike in the surrounding area. Devote at least half of your day for hiking the area. Or if you prefer, camp at the park. You can’t drive directly to Kamkochi, you need to take a bus or taxi. Park at the Akandana Parking lot. It’s about 600 ￥ and the first bus stop on the Nohi Bus for Kamikochi. You can buy your tickets for Kamikochi there, or if the power is knocked out, they will let you hop on the bus and take you to Hirayu Onsen Bus Terminal so you can buy your tickets there. Just remember that the parking lot closes around 5 pm (17:00) so a lot enough time to get back or your car could be stuck for the evening.
Hirayu Onsen Area
Lots of onsens in the area. Even if you don’t stay in their hotel, many will allow you to use their onsen facilities and they are inexpensive to use. Just follow the rules of using the onsen, shower before going into the onsen, no towels in the onsen pool, get used to naked people around you, enjoy the experience, and your towel will smell like sulfur afterwards (so be warned!).
Hirayu Onsen Bus Terminal (Nohi Bus System)
The bus terminal is one of the launching points to Kamikochi. The terminal has clean restrooms, lockers, onsen, restaurant, souvenir shop, and ticket kiosks. Parking is limited and depending on when you get there, only 1 hour of parking,
Hirayu-no-mori
The onsen we visited on our last trip. Well maintained facilities and you can buy towels from the lobby. In addition, they have a pretty good restaurant inside so you can soak in the onsen and enjoy a bite at one of their restaurants.
Shinhotaka Ropeway
It was down due to no power from Typhoon Jebi hitting the area.
Hirayu Otaki Park (Hirayu falls)
It was raining so hard when we got there and it didn’t let up. We weren’t equipped to handle the 30 min trek from the parking lot to the falls. But maybe next time.

Unagi Restaurant (うな亭)

My mouth waters just thinking about this place. It’s definitely worth getting out there if you can make it. Savory and yet sweet sauce coats the entire unagi (eel) and it’s amazing. When you order, they give you a photo book with their offerings. It’s basically small to supersize me unagi, and you should get the soup as well.

Hirayu Camping Grounds
Whether you’re car camping, pitching a tent or renting a cabin from them, it’s a friendly place to get some sleep. Plus they have discount tickets to use the onsen at Hirayu-no-mori.
