KUMANO KODO: Pilgrimage to Japan's Spiritual Origins

If you are going to watch one video about the KUMANO KODO, this is it!

The Kumano Kodo is a set of ancient pilgrimage routes that crisscross the mountainous Kii peninsula of Japan. They link isolated sacred sites with a unique mixture of Buddhism and native belief systems.

This virtual tour begins on the east coast of the peninsula in Tanabe City and follows the Nakahechi pilgrimage route into the mountains through local villages, introducing the history, culture, and sights, finishing at Nachisan, the site of Japan's tallest waterfall. Places visited include the three Grand Shrines of Kumano called the Kumano Sanzan: Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha. Logistics such as local transport, places to stay, and convenient tools to help plan a trip are highlighted.

Trip to Wakayama ✈️ | Hidden Gems of Japan Ep. 1 | onsen & beaches ♨️ | JAPAN TRAVEL VLOG 4K ????????

Hi Everyone!

This is the first episode of my series, Hidden Gems of Japan. In this vlog, I want to show everyone one of Japan's most underrated prefectures, Wakayama. Join me on a journey through breathtaking scenery, delicious food, and unforgettable experiences. Get ready to fall in love with this off-the-beaten-path destination. #WakayamaWonderland #JapanUnexplored #TravelGoals #DayTripsfromOsaka

Wakayama Quick Takes: Nachikatsuura, Hashiguiiwa Rocks and Tanabe City.

A post-Kumano Kodo hike tour of #Wakayama sights: an overnight in Nachikatsuura, a quick stop to Hashiguiiwa rocks via Kushimoto Station, and Tanabe City.

I stayed the night in a lovely hotel in #Nachikatsuura which offers in-house onsen and also really delicious meals. I had my taste of Kumano beef and it was delicious! My room also had incredible views of the coast and the sea as well!

The next day, on my way to Tanabe City, I made a quick stop at #Kushimoto along the coast to check out the #Hashiguiiwa rock formations. Beautiful andwind-swept, and you can walk to the rocks as long as the tide is low! There are cafes facing the rock formations. I had a local udon specialty whilst enjoying the view.

After Kushimoto, Tanabe City! I stayed in a machiya about 15 minutes from the Kii-Tanabe station there's a river with a boardwalk right behind it. So gorgeous! Also took a walk to Tokei shrine, one of Tanabe City's landmarks as well as an important spot for Kumano Kodo pilgrims. What a way to wrap up my Kumano Kodo journey!

Next --- Koya-san! Which is, interestingly, also plays a role in Kumano Kodo as it connects to the Kumano Grand Shrine in Hongu via the Kohechi trail. But we're not walking this time; in the near future, I hope!

▼Rejuvenate in a Peaceful, Seaside Town: Tanabe in Wakayama Prefecture

Approximately two hours south of Osaka by train along the coast of the Kii Peninsula, Tanabe is Wakayama Prefecture’s second largest city. For well over a millennia Tanabe has been a key junction for the Kumano Kodo, an ancient pilgrimage network granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 2004; even now the city serves as a gateway to one of the three main Kumano shrines, the Kumano Hongu Taisha.

Tanabe’s expansive area provides a diverse geography: dramatic coastlines quickly give way to hills laden with ume (plum) and mandarin orange orchards, while further inland mountains and waterfalls tempt those interested in hiking and trekking. The city is also the birthplace of Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, one of Japan’s most famous martial arts.
