I am especially excited about this weeks video because we are going to Miyazaki, Japan! We’ve actually been to Miyazaki before but never made it all the way out to the coast. I had plans to go earlier in the summer but the week we had planned to go we saw torrential downpours and decided to reschedule. This trip has been on my list of places to go because of the beautiful dog friendly Airbnb that we found. A friend actually stayed in the Airbnb last spring and also recommended it so I knew I wanted to go.

I wasn’t sure about the city the Airbnb was in (Hyuga, Miyazaki) but we ended up loving the small surf town vibes that it gave off. It wasn’t touristy at all and honestly felt like a local hang out. We let Olive swim on the beach in a huge tide pool and then when all the surfers left for the workweek we let her let loose on the beach and run to her hearts content. It wasn’t crowded at all, but I would say that is more likely due to the time of year. I’m sure during the height of summer Hyuga is a VERY popular place to be.
Hyuga was about a 4.5hr drive from Sasebo and we took the route through Oita on the way there. We stopped at a coffee shop AND a brewery and I definitely recommend both of them! There is something really great about finding these random places out in the middle of nowhere! It made the drive much more enjoyable to have fun stops along the way.

MIYAZAKI, JAPAN: Miyazaki, located in the southern part of Kyushu island in Japan is extremely famous for its chicken, beef, and seafood - including the prized local spiny lobsters. To today we're driving along the coast of Miyzaki to eat some of the ultimate fresher seafood catch - including the freshest ever lobster sashimi and a kaisen don with raw seafood over rice.
Lobster sashimi: - The first place was off the beaten path, a small family run seafood hut on the side of the ocean known for their local lobsters. I chose one of the biggest they had - though not that huge. And in approximately 15 seconds it was lobster sashimi. It was so fresh and so sweet, and the lobster head was made into a delicious miso soup. Highly recommend this amazing little seafood restaurant in Miyazaki.
Price - 6,000 JPY ($45.89) total for lobster meal
Kaisen don at Taikai: - Next up we drove just down the road to the next bay along the coast, headed for an extremely famous seafood restaurant known for their lobster and kaizen dons. A kaizen don included rice topped with a medley of fresh seafood, this bowl included almost a dozen different seafood from abalone to fish. It was ultra fresh and pure. Finally we also ordered a big plate of fresh raw sashimi to complete this incredible day of seafood on the coast of Miyazaki, Japan.

Japan Trip Takanabe Daishi
High on a hill overlooking Takanabe City in Miyazaki Prefecture is Takanabe Daishi, a Buddhist Temple that proves if you get off the beaten path, Japan is often even more strange and more wonderful than you might have first imagined.
We were drawn to this site by the primitive statues created by Yasukichi Iwaoka (1889-1977). His sculptures seem to draw from the tradition of the Tanokami (aka Tanokansa) statues used in Japanese villages to protect rice fields and protect against natural disasters. Some of these can be seen around Ebino City that lies southwest of Miyazaki.
His works reminded of us of naive or “outsider” art here in the USA by the likes of Robert Traylor, MoseT, Howard Finster, St. EOM, and Albert Hodge, among others. Some have noted the similarity of Iwako’s work to the Easter Island statues and Totem Poles of Native Americans.
When he was young, Yasukichi made the Shikoku Pilgrimage of 88 temples (aka the Ohenro Pilgrimage). He was very moved by the experience and vowed to one day re-create it by constructing a miniature version of the pilgrimage near his home. He was also motivated by the looting of the ancient Mochida burial grounds near the site. Yasukichi believed that his mini-pilgrimage would help console the souls of those whose graves had been disturbed by robbers.
At around age 40, he left a successful career as a rice merchant, and with his wife set out to fulfil his vision. First he hired professional stone carvers to make jizos representing each temple in the Shikoku Pilgrimage. (Each is numbered (in Japanese kanji) so carry a guidebook of the Shikoku pilgrimage to add some more depth to your experience of Takanabe Daishi). He learned to sculpt by watching the carvers work. He then began carving statues of Shinto dieties (kami), Buddhist icons, and parishioners of his temple. Some of his parishioners helped him carve the statues.
Several of the statues are monumental in scale and include Inari the god of the rice harvest, Susano no Mikoto the god of storms, and Amaterasu the sun goddess. There are also a Buddhist Temple and a Shinto shrine on-site that Yasukichi built.
Takanabe Daishi has been restored in recent years. Improvements include (thankfully) a clean modern restroom facility. The restrooms are decorated with whimsical wooden self-portraits in the Takanabe Daishi style apparently carved by schoolchildren.
The site was not staffed the day we were there. However, there may be a local volunteer there sometimes. We spent two and half hours there, only leaving then because of our travel schedule. We only saw one other person, apparently a local just passing through.
After our visit to Takenabe Daishi, we went to Akiyama a seafood restaurant on the beach that was recommended by our taxi driver. It is just a 5 minute walk from Takenabe Station. The food, atmosphere and service were wonderful!
We highly recommend a visit to Takenabe Daishi!
To reach Takenabe Daishi, we took a train out of Miyazaki (about a 30 minute ride). From Takenabe Station we took a cab to Takenabe Daishi (about 10 minutes).

We also went to Fukuoka Airport the next day to send off Ryo-san as she flew back to Hokkaido.
