Sydney Nova Scotia has so many things to see and do. These are the top 15 things to see and do when visiting Sydney Nova Scotia. Sydney is such a historical town where the largest Fiddle in the World resides. There are also so many old churches and old buildings to tour. Or just walk through downtown Sydney for some great shopping. If you are coming by cruise ship as we did there are plenty of things to see and do at the port as well. Some great restaurants along the water and the Boardwalk and all of it is within walking distance from the port.

Things To Do In Sydney NS

--~--
Things to do in Sydney, NS gives some suggestion how to spend the day in Sydney while your cruise ship is in port. Sydney, Nova Scotia has become a very popular stop on most cruise ship itineraries on Canada Cruises from New York and Cruises from Boston.

Nova Scotia means New Scotland, and the sound of bagpipes is not uncommon here. Early Scottish settlers felt the land resembled home. The most popular excursion is a trip to the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Park, an amazing re-creation of a 1744 French fortress. Bird-watchers will want to venture out to Bird Islands to spot the Atlantic puffin and bald eagle. The sinuous Cabot Trail along the coast offers one of the most dramatic drives in North America.

A day in Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia

A day trip to Sydney on Cape Breton in Nova Scotia is sure to be a memorable adventure, with every stop on the itinerary being a unique experience and a destination to remember. Home to about 30,000 people, Sydney is a popular port of call on North Atlantic cruises and the city transforms on those days – there's so much dynamics around the downtown, restaurants are booked with waiting lines, souvenir shops run out of maple syrup and all that jazz.
Sydney is convenient to base your Cape Breton adventures from, due to the size of the island it is easy to run several day trips from Sydney to different destinations. And of course Cabot Trail is right nearby, Cabot Trail is a magnificent scenic route showing Cape Breton in all its minimalistic northern beauty. I hope this video will help you get the look and feel of Sydney! Thanks for watching.

CAPE BRETON Travel Guide ???? | Things to do in Cape Breton, NOVA SCOTIA, Canada ????????

Hello and greetings from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia where in this travel guide we plan to highlight some of the top things to do for visitors! We recently spent a week road-tripping the island and what an adventure that was! This was our fourth summer exploring Nova Scotia, and this time around we focused on southern Cape Breton, specifically the area between St. Peter’s and Port Hastings. Here is our Cape Breton Travel Guide covering some fascinating things to do in Nova Scotia, Canada.

I think this is a really interesting area to visit because it is very accessible. Port Hastings is the first town you hit if you’re crossing via the Canso Causeway (the only land access point to the island!), so it’s a logical starting point, and it makes a lot of sense for travellers who want to see a bit of Cape Breton without having to drive too far.

We spent our week in southern Cape Breton doing an iconic sail from lake to sea, feasting on seafood at every meal, tackling different hiking trails, and enjoying the warm hospitality the island is known for.

So hit that subscribe button and join us as we explore Cape Breton, Nova Scotia!

Places we visited in southern Cape Breton:

St Peter’s Canal Sailing Tour
The Island Nest
LeNoir Forge
Lennox Passage Provincial Park
The Groundswell Inn
Battery Provincial Park
St Peter’s Coastal Trail
Lockmaster’s Pub
Miller's
Port Hawkesbury Community Trails
The Country Kitchen
Celtic Shores Coastal Trail
Canso Causeway
The Cove
Dundee Resort and Golf Club
MacRae’s Dining Room

Cape Breton Travel Guide | Cabot Trail Road Trip in Nova Scotia, Canada

In this video, we continue our road trip through the Canadian Maritimes, this time visiting Cape Breton, a large island in Nova Scotia that is separated from the mainland by the Strait of Canso. During our visit, we stayed in a converted barn, hiked the trails of the Cape Breton Highlands, and drove around 300 kilometres on the world-famous Cabot Trail that borders the island.

Our first day kicked off early with a drive up to Cape Breton Highlands National Park. We spent 2 days hiking the various trails and searching for the elusive moose. The funniest moment of that hike: there were signs with bear warnings throughout the park so I think that was on the back of everyone’s mind, and of course Togo was walking upfront because he insists on leading the pack. Well, there was a group of hikers coming from the opposite direction and when Togo was the first one to round the bend all by his lonesome self, the hikers saw his black furry face and thought he was a bear! Poor Togo looked really confused - he just wanted to greet the group of hikers.

Of course, no trip to Cape Breton would have been complete without driving the world-famous Cabot Trail, which is named after John Cabot, or Giovanni Caboto, an Italian navigator and explorer, who was one of the first Europeans of modern times to reach North America in 1497. Cabot had been denied support for his expedition in Spain and Portugal, so he went to England, where he received financial support from Henry the Seventh. Cabot's plan was to reach Asia by sailing west along the North Atlantic and he estimated that this route could be shorter and faster than the one recently discovered by Columbus. The exact location of his arrival in North America is unknown, but today the route that borders Cape Breton is named after him.

During our trip to Cape Breton, we also visited the Alexander Graham Bell Historic Site in Baddeck. Alexander Graham Bell is best known as the inventor of the telephone, but he also invented the photophone, the metal detector, the hydrofoil, and he designed the Silver Dart which made the first aircraft flight in Canada. Perhaps more interesting is that apart from all these great inventions, Bell devoted most of his life to teaching the deaf, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. We really enjoyed this museum and would highly recommend it if you’re in the area.

That's a little taste of our trip to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia! We hope you enjoyed this video and we'll see you in the next episode where we continue our road trip through the Canadian Maritimes. Next up: Prince Edward Island!

North Sydney And Sydney Mines Cape Breton Nova Scotia (June 16/09)

North Sydney And Sydney Mines Cape Breton Nova Scotia (Music By Dave Matthews Band You And Me)

North Sydney (2001 pop.: 6,775) is a community in Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

Located on the north side of Sydney Harbour, along the eastern coast of Cape Breton Island, North Sydney is an important port in Atlantic Canada as it is the western terminus of the Marine Atlantic ferry service. It acts as the marine link for the Trans-Canada Highway to the island of Newfoundland, which is why North Sydney's nickname is called The Gateway To Newfoundland.

Marine Atlantic ferries currently operate from North Sydney's terminal to the ports of Port aux Basques and Argentia. The company is one of the largest employers in the area.

History
North Sydney emerged as a major shipbuilding centre in the early 1800s building many brigs and brigantines for the English market and later moving on to larger Barques and, in 1851, the full rigged ship Lord Clarendon, the largest wooden ship ever built in Cape Breton. Wooden shipbuilding declined in the 1860s but the same decade saw the arrival of increasing numbers of steamships drawn to North Sydney for bunker coal. By 1870 it was the fourth largest port in Canada dealing in ocean-going vessels, drawn for coal and due to the fact that The Western Union cable office had been established here in 1875. The railroad came to Cape Breton Island in 1891. At this time there were 2,513 people in North Sydney, compared to 2,417 in Sydney.

In 1898 North Sydney was chosen by the Reid-Newfoundland Company as the Canadian mainland terminal for a ferry service to Newfoundland; in June of that year the SS Bruce sailed from Port Aux Basques, it was the first ship to make that run.

World Wars
During the first and second World wars, North Sydney played an important role in the relay of information from Europe to both Ottawa and Washington. North Sydney was home to a Western Union Cable office. It was here where coded messages were sent from overseas then relayed on to the rest of North America.

On the morning of November 10, 1918, the office received a top-secret coded message from Europe. It stated that effective at 11 am the next day (November 11, 1918) all fighting would cease on land, sea and in the air.

Therefore the people of North Sydney, in particular Mrs. Annie Butler Smith, were the first to know about the end of the Great War. It is reported that on the night on November 10, 1918, over 200 servicemen celebrated by marching through the streets of the town to celebrate the end of the war, one day before the rest of the world knew.

Sydney Mines (2001 population: 7,312) is a former town in Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

Sydney Mines Founded in 1784 and incorporated as a town in 1889, has a rich history in coal production, although mining activity has now ceased.

Geography

Sydney Mines in Nova ScotiaSydney Mines lies immediately northeast of North Sydney and faces Sydney across Sydney Harbour. Sydney Mines was once a major coal-producing community. Mining began locally in 1766, and in 1830 systematic operations were undertaken. One of the area mines extended about 5 miles (8 km) out under the sea. The last mine was closed in 1975.

As of 1991, the population was 7,551. The current demographics map Sydney Mines at 95% caucasian (White), and 5% Jamaican (Black).

Sydney Mines is on the northern side of Sydney Harbor, near the mouth. It was earlier known as the Mines due to the coal mines abundant nearby. Although mining has been carried on since 1724, the first shaft for the General Mining Association in Sydney Mines was sunk in 1830. Manufacturing enterprises included corrugated steel culverts and the British Canadian Co-operative Society Limited, operating a dairy and a bakery.

Arriving in Sydney, Canada

Arriving in Sydney, Canada at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion.

Sydney, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada

Sydney is a Canadian community in Nova Scotia. Situated on Cape Breton Island's east coast. Sydney was founded in 1785 and named in honour of Thomas Townsend, 1st Viscount Sydney, Britain's Home Secretary at the time, a few years later, Sydney, Australia would also be named after him.

Sydney has recently witnessed a tourism revival with cruise ship facilities and a waterfront revitalization plan which has seen a boardwalk and marinas constructed, and the world's largest fiddle.

Sydney's tourism draw is increasingly linked to its cultural asset as being the urban heart of Cape Breton Island. Its population is a diverse mixture of nationalities which contributes to various Scottish, Acadian, African Canadian and eastern European cultural events being held throughout the year.
