An interesting small town in CA… | Susanville, CA | Ride Along (Best stop for Reno/Tahoe trip?)
Greetings from Susanville, California!
We recently passed through the prison town of Susanville on our way to Reno/Lake Tahoe, and so I pressed record on my dash cam as we drove through. Sorry about the bug splats. Slightly out of my control. :-)
Although we didn't need to stop at the time, it would serve as an ideal pit stop for anyone needing to gas up, or grab some cheap eats as they're driving on CA-36 to or from Reno/Tahoe, as it's one of the larger towns you'll find on that route.
Be sure to watch towards the end as well, because I included what I found to be a pretty crazy fact about the local economy of Susanville.

Buying a house can be hard. If you are thinking about California and don't need to be in one of the major cities, this list is for you.
Nobody wants a giant mortgage but in most of California, that is what you are going to get.
If you enjoy these videos I would love to hear about it. Most of these videos are made to help people who are thinking about relocating, looking for real estate, or just wanting to learn about the United States. We look at the best and worst cities, states, towns, and neighborhoods in the United States. But, most of the time focus on the negative side of locations. If you only want some happy positive information about a city, town, or state, I would suggest looking up local mortgage and real estate companies or maybe the locations website. They are trying to sell you something so it will be nothing but sunshine, rainbows, and a bunch of smoke up your skirt. They won't tell you about crime, poverty, bail bondsmen, or insurance you'll need because of natural disasters. I will. And I will try and make it entertaining.

Susanville
Susanville (formerly known as Rooptown) is a town in and the county seat of Lassen County, California, United States.[4] Susanville is located on the Susan River in the southern part of the county,[5] at an elevation of 4,186 feet (1,276 m).[4] Its population is 16,728 as of the 2020 census, down from 17,947 from the 2010 census.
Susanville, a former logging and mining town, is the site of two state prisons: the California Correctional Center, a minimum-medium security facility, which opened in 1963; and the High Desert State Prison, California (not to be confused with High Desert State Prison, Nevada), which opened in 1995. The Federal Correctional Institution, Herlong is nearby, having opened in 2001.
The prisons and their effects on the community, including the addition of local jobs, were explored in the documentary Prison Town, USA (2007), aired on PBS.[6][7] Nearly half the adult population of Susanville works at the three prisons in the area, where 6,000 people are incarcerated.

Lassen County - Susanville Ranch Hike
This hike climbs uphill to a rocky lookout. The hillside forest includes mountain conifers & dry-land sage. The trails, designed for mountain bikers, include many switchbacks & curve around the hillside so the grade is mild. There are wonderful vistas of Susanville, to the south of the Sierra Nevada, & to the east of The Great Basin Desert & Nevada. All-in-all, its an enjoyable hike.

The 26 mile Bizz Johnson trail is rated as one of the most scenic trails in California. After biking the seven mile single track South Side Trail on the other side of river, this is a great cool down back to the parking lot. You can practically coast the whole way, and the tunnels will provide a cool breeze on hot summer days.
WEED TO SUSANVILLE IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA - SCENIC SUNDAY DRIVE
Today's Scenic Sunday Drive is in Northern California along the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway between Weed and Susanville.
Once leaving Interstate 5 just south of Weed, we travel east and southeast on California Highways 89 and 44.
This drive is on part of the California section of the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway which stretches 500 miles through the Cascade Mountain Range past several volcanoes in Oregon and California.
There is a lot of beautiful scenery to see along the way.
