Hey guys, welcome back to my channel. In today's video we will be visiting the AWAJI Island in Hyogo Prefecture. A little over 2 hours drive southwest of Osaka, we will cross the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, at almost 4kilometers, considered to be one of the longest suspension bridges in the world to this wonderful and legendary island of Awaji. We will also explore the AWAJI-HANASAJIKI, an open air flower gallery which showcases different flower blooms for every season. Of course, we cannot complete this trip without tasting the Anago, a saltwater eel that is a known special of this Island.

But if you’re into more the local shopping scene then it’s a must to venture into the shopping streets, also known as shotengai.

When Kobe it’s international port in 1868, this foreign settlement was constructed. Designed by British Civil engineers the 126 blocks were auctioned to western foreigners. 70% of the buildings were destroyed after the World War II air raids in 1945. Kobe city decided preserved the remaining buildings as cultural properties.

Q: How long was the trip?
A: Around 18 days. But I would say it's doable in 2 weeks. If you want more time to explore then 3 weeks should be more than adequate.
Q: How many days do I need in each city?
A: I would say 3-5 days in Kyoto and Osaka. Nara 1-2 days. At least 4-6 days in Tokyo but the more the better.
Q: How much did it cost?
A: Excluding hotels + airplane tickets we had a budget of around 2000 USD
Q: Is there vegan restaurant options in Japan?
A: Yes, I found plenty, and most restaurants offer vegan-friendly meals
Q: Which month did you go?
A: We visited in July but I would recommend visiting in either the Autumn or Spring season

Kobe Travel
Kobe, located about 35 kilometers west of Osaka, is Japan’s 7th largest city. Aside from being one of the country’s major international trading ports, Kobe is also well-known for its European-style architecture and well-marbled Wagyu beef.
There are numerous ways to get to Kobe from Osaka, and one efficient option is to take the JR train from Osaka-Umeda Station.
At Osaka-Umeda Station, proceed to the JR Kobe Line platform, and take the Special Rapid Service train. The train ride will take about 40 minutes.
The most convenient way to get around Kobe is by using the CITY LOOP Sightseeing Bus, which stops at all major sightseeing attractions of the city. We recommend to purchase the 1-day or 2-day bus ticket that offers unlimited travel.

Best Places to Visit on Awaji Island Part #2 - Hyogo, Japan [Travel]

Awaji Island is located off the coast of Kobe and lies in between the Shikoku Islands and Osaka. If you like the slow paced life of the countryside, this place is for you. There's lots of amazing nature and attractions to see. Awaji Island is most known for their onions, which are much much sweeter in comparison. Awaji Beef is another famous produce, rivaling the quality of Kobe Beef.

Locations in order:
1) Izanagi Shrine
- Said to be one of the oldest shrines in Japan, Izanagi Jingu worships Izanagi, one of the two gods involved in the creation of Japan. Legend has it that Onokoro Island was the very first land of Japan, followed by Awaji, and eventually the rest of the island masses.
2) Sumoto Castle
- You can either drive up or hike up to see Sumoto Castle. It overseas the town of Sumoto and the ocean, being one of the best views on the island. During spring, the sakura season makes this place a must-go.
3) Awaji Gochiso-kan Miketsukuni
- A local restaurant that serves amazing food with ingredients sourced from local farms and areas.
4) Etoile Cafe at Retro Street
- Retro street is the embodiment of history in present. There's a shopping arcade nearby, and the entire street has a calm, nostalgic feel of Japan from the old times. It's an amazing place to get acquainted with locals to better understand the island.
5) Artisan Square
- Artisan square has interesting sculptures, art monuments, interesting western architecture and a library as well.
6) Sumoto Onsen
- The town of Sumoto is home to many onsen places, and the Hotel New Awaji featured here is one of the popular ones. You get an amazing sea view, 2 types of onsen style (terrace and traditional), and also a few females exclusive onsen which are said to rejuvenate the skin, among other beneficial effects.
7) Nushima Island
- Nushima is closely related in the folklore of the Origins of Japan according to the old literature records of Kojiki and involved the 2 gods Izanagi and Izanami.
8) Onokoro Shrine
- The shrine dedicated to both Izanagi and Izanami which is different from the earlier featured Izanagi Shrine. There's a statue of the 2 gods and the spear which was used to churn the oceans to create Japan.

Places to visit in Japan - Awajishima 淡路島
Awaji Island (淡路島 Awajishima in Japanese) is a not-terribly-large island - about the same size as Singapore - that marks the eastern boundary of the Seto Inland Sea of Japan. Thanks to a set of new bridges and a cross-island expressway, most visitors just zip through on their way from Honshu to Shikoku.

-To see the Naruto whirlpools, stop at the expressway rest area at the southernmost tip of the island near the Onaruto bridge. If you have money to spare, you can take a little boat cruise to see them up close; note that whirlpools only appear when the tide is coming in or out.
- Aside from whirlpools and burial mounds and onions, Awajishima's main claim to fame are its beaches, especially on the more sparsely settled northern coast. They're nothing spectacular by international standards, but a popular nearby summer getaway for Kansai-ites just the same, and Awajishima has many campgrounds that cater to the budget traveller.
-There are also a number of hot springs (onsen), the best known of which are Awaji's largest town Sumoto and the mildly radioactive(!) waters of Iwaya adjacent to the northern bridge.
-The Sumoto Castle [5] requires quite a hike but is a small beautiful castle at the top of a hill and can be seen from all over Sumoto. The view from the top is extraordinary.
-There are two buildings designed by famous Japanese architect Tadao Ando on Awaji Shima: Water Temple [6] and Yume no Butai.
- A section of the Nojima Fault, responsible for the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake, preserved at Nojima Fault Preservation Museum.
- The Kiseki no Hoshi Botanical Museum [7]is a beautiful stop on the bus line. There are numerous exhibits indoor and out. It is connected to the Westin Hotel.

The southern coast, however, is essentially one long semi-urban sprawl filled with the (stink/scent) of ripening onions; the only breaks in the monotony are a fairly hideous (but huge) concrete statue of the Buddhist deity Kannon and the inevitable Onokoro Amusement Park.

This is by far the least touristy of the 3 major monkey parks, due to it being the hardest to get to. I didn't see any other foreigners the whole time in Sumoto or at monkey park. It is the shortest walk to the monkeys, only a 4 minute stroll up a hill. The ladies who run the monkey park were very friendly. Was amazing to see monkeys up close for the first time, so many of them wandering around right through the crowd without a care. Lots of babies were around at the time, and some deer were also in the area.
It's a good idea to take an early bus from Sannomiya to Sumoto Bus Center. Explore the area, have a good meal then jump on the Sumoto community bus. There were lots of great little authentic shops and restaurants near the bus center. The area is pretty devoid of foreigners, so it was the one place I got stared at a little.
Apologies for the walkthrough toward the end having a little video stutter, forgot to change out to my high speed microsd.

Take an Awaji Kotsu bus for Sumoto Bus Center. ~2 per hour Will take you across Akashi Kaikyo, the world's longest span bridge!

You pretty much have to take the 12:10 departure, and catch the return bus at 15:37, which gives you about 3 hours of time there.
