Lanterman's Mill in Mill Creek Park with PANICd Paranormal History - Park Travel Review

We visited Lanterman's Mill in Mill Creek Metropark in September of 2019 with PANICd Paranormal History. We had seen the mill in several of their videos and wanted to visit. They thought that this would be the perfect introduction to their area and a great place to start our visit together!
PANICd Paranormal History:
Lanterman's Mill was built in 18-45-46 by German Lanterman. It is the third mill to stand in this location. It is still operational and they mill meal and flour. The mill was restored in 1982-84. It is in the National Register of Historic Places. We enjoyed exploring and getting to see the water wheel start up.

YOUNGSTOWN 4K - Driving Downtown - OHIO

YOUNGSTOWN 4K - Driving Downtown - OHIO

Youngstown is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, and the largest city and county seat of Mahoning County. According to the 2020 United States Census, Youngstown had a city population of 60,068.[3] The Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area, with a population of 541,243 is the 107th-largest metropolitan area in the United States.[6]

Youngstown is on the Mahoning River, approximately 58 miles (93 km) southeast of Cleveland and 61 miles (100 km) northwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In addition to having its own media market, Youngstown is often classified as part of both Northeast Ohio and the Greater Pittsburgh Region due to these proximities. Youngstown is midway between Chicago and New York City via Interstate 80.

The city was named for John Young, an early settler from Whitestown, New York, who established the community's first sawmill and gristmill. Youngstown is called a midwestern city, but is less than 400 miles (640 km) from the Atlantic Ocean. It was an early industrial city of the late 19th and early 20th centuries; with restructuring of heavy industry and movement of jobs offshore, it has been classified as part of the Rust Belt. Traditionally known as a center of steel production, Youngstown has been forced to adapt after the steel industry in the United States fell into decline in the 1970s, leaving communities throughout the region without any major industry. There has been a decline in population of more than 60% since 1959. Youngstown falls within the Appalachian Ohio region, among the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

Downtown Youngstown has seen tremendous change since 2010. It has become a center of culture, entertainment, and innovation. It is now home to bars, restaurants, and the recently completed Youngstown Foundation Amphitheater. Youngstown's first new downtown hotel since 1974—the DoubleTree by Hilton—opened in 2018 in the historic Stambaugh Building, adapted for this use. First floor commercial space includes a restaurant.[7] Several businesses, such as Turning Technologies, an education technology company, are headquartered in Downtown Youngstown.
oungstown was named for New York native John Young, who surveyed the area in 1796 and settled there soon afterward.[8] On February 9, 1797, Young purchased the township of 15,560 acres (6,300 ha) from the Western Reserve Land Company for $16,085.[9] The 1797 establishment of Youngstown was officially recorded on August 19, 1802.[10]

The area that includes present-day Youngstown was part of the Connecticut Western Reserve, a section of the Northwest Territory that Connecticut initially did not cede to the Federal government.[11][12] Upon cession, Connecticut retained the title to the land in the Western Reserve, which it sold to the Connecticut Land Company for $1,200,000.[11][12][13] While many of the area's early settlers came from Connecticut, Youngstown attracted many Scots-Irish settlers from neighboring Pennsylvania.[14] The first European Americans to settle permanently in the area were Pittsburgh native James Hillman and wife Catherine Dougherty.[15] By 1798, Youngstown was the home of several families who were concentrated near where Mill Creek meets the Mahoning River.[16] Boardman Township was founded in 1798 by Elijah Boardman, a member of the Connecticut Land Company. Also founded in 1798 was Austintown by John McCollum who was a settler from New Jersey.[17]

As the Western Reserve's population grew, the need for administrative districts became apparent. In 1800, territorial governor Arthur St. Clair established Trumbull County (named in honor of Connecticut Governor Jonathan Trumbull), and designated the smaller settlement of Warren as its administrative center, or county seat.[18] In 1813, Trumbull County was divided into townships, with Youngstown Township comprising much of what became Mahoning County.[19] The village of Youngstown was incorporated in 1848, and in 1867 Youngstown was chartered as a city. It became the county seat in 1876, when the administrative center of Mahoning County was moved from neighboring Canfield.[20] Youngstown has been Mahoning County's county seat to this day

Ohio's Strongest Ghoul Strongman Competition [4K] | Struthers, Ohio

Ohio’s Strongest Ghoul is the 2nd annual USS sanctioned strongman event held by Iron Fit Crew. Held in a unique, industrial park setting, the atmosphere screamed grit, strength, and every essence of the sport of strongman. With 88 competitors, handful of local sponsors, Cerberus Strength, Nia Grant Volleyball Academy, and a multitude of volunteers, the event was successful and helped a local family. This year's benefactor was Peyton, a 17 year old who is battling a rare form of cancer known as Ewing Sarcoma. For more information about the competition, visit Ironfitcrew.com. Wolfgang Wengler - Tyler History Center - May 25, 2022

Wolfgang Wengler introduces his contributions to the Cultural Connections exhibit at the Tyler History Center in Youngstown, Ohio. Wolfgang has collected and archived German contributions to the Mahoning Valley for over 50 years.

Leetonia, Ohio

Leetonia is a village in Columbiana County, Ohio. The village was founded in 1869 following the American Civil War. This small village was founded as a company town associated with the Leetonia Iron and Coal Company. The Cherry Valley Coke Ovens constructed around 1866. One of the largest facilities in the nation, these ovens were designed to transform coal into coke to manufacture iron and steel. Financial troubles hit the company during the Great Depression and the ovens were closed permanently. It is a great piece of history that is still around to see.

360º Driving Tour of Mahoning Avenue Mahoning County Ohio

With the sun casting a warm glow onto the remains of the fall foliage, a recent trip to Ohio gave us a day and a half to ride around the greater Youngstown Ohio area and get some videoing in.

We came in from Columbus in the late afternoon and started videoing on Mahoning Avenue where North Jackson turns into Austintown. The colors were beautiful, and it was fun to cruise down Mahoning Avenue once again.

We crossed over Meander Reservoir and into Austintown. We continued driving east through Austintown into Youngstown's West Side. From the West Side, we followed Mahoning until arriving at the entrance to downtown Youngstown, Ohio.

We hope former and current resident will enjoy this opportunity to explore the changes along this familiar main stretch.

If you don't have a VR headset, you can use the screen on your smartphone or computer to move around this 360º video. If you are watching on your phone, turn it to the horizontal (landscape) position for the best view and then turn side to side as if you are looking out of the windows of the car.

The Republic Steel Company was founded in 1899 in Youngstown Ohio This location is Lorain Ohio

The Republic Steel Company was founded in 1899 in Youngstown, Ohio. The firm was originally known as Republic Iron and Steel Company. For the company's first three decades of existence, it prospered, as Ohio was one of the leading industrialist states of the period.
In 1927, Cyrus Eaton purchased a majority of the stock in the Republic Steel Company. At the same time, Eaton also purchased stock in other companies. He hoped to unite these companies together to compete with the U.S. Steel Company—the largest steel manufacturer in the United States. Under Eaton's leadership, the Republic Steel Company expanded its manufacturing holdings to include plants in Massillon, Elyria, Canton, Cleveland, and Warren, Ohio. Thanks to Eaton's efforts, the Republic Steel Company emerged as the third largest steel producer in the United States.
The Republic Steel Company, like many other businesses, faced an economic downturn during the Great Depression. The firm, unlikely many others, remained in operation and actually expanded its holdings by purchasing smaller steel companies as they went bankrupt. Tom Girdler now headed the company, and under his leadership, the firm's corporate headquarters moved to Cleveland. During the 1930s, the Republic Steel Company also faced tensions with its steel workers. The company's workers sought to unionize, but Girdler and his subordinates did all in their power to prevent this from occurring. In 1937, workers at the Republic Steel Company, the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, and several other steel companies went on strike over low wages and poor working conditions. Collectively these steel companies were known as “Little Steel.” The strikers belonged to the Congress of Industrial Organizations, a union established in 1935. The workers used sit-down strikes and picket lines to attain their goals of better wages and improved working conditions. In the past, when workers went on strike they would leave the factory to join picket lines. Company owners often hired “scab” laborers to cross the picket lines and continue production. The practice of using scab labor made it difficult for striking workers to obtain their demands. In contrast, in a sit-down strike, workers quit working but still occupied their places within the factory. This process made it difficult for the factory owners to send in additional workers to continue the job. In addition, factory management was more reluctant to use private security forces or other strike breakers to intimidate the striking workers, as that approach threatened destruction to plant property.
People sympathetic to the workers used airplanes to drop food inside of the plants. They also attempted to mail food into the businesses, but the post office refused to deliver the packages to the strikers. To prevent the strike from occurring in the first place the Little Steel companies had hired their own police forces to intimidate workers. During the strikes, the companies lobbied local residents to put pressure on the strikers and their families. Numerous citizens formed committees, including the Mahoning Valley, Ohio Citizens Committee, the Citizens Law and Order League of Canton, Ohio, and the John Q. Public League of Warren, Ohio, to protest the striker's actions. Little Steel brought in scab laborers to work the machines, while the sit-down strikers remained in the plants. The employers even used tear gas to drive the strikers out of the businesses. The governor of Ohio, Martin L. Davey, eventually sent troops in to break up the strike.
While Republic Steel proved successful in the “Little Steel Strike of 1937,” with the outbreak of World War II, the firm quickly permitted unions in its mills so that the firm could acquire lucrative government contracts. The company prospered throughout the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, but competition from foreign steel, higher wages, and new environmental codes began to hurt the firm. The situation continued to worsen for the Republic Steel Company during the 1980s, and in 1984, the company merged with Jones and Laughlin to create LTV Steel.
