MAPPLETON: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #123 of 172

EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #123: MAPPLETON

Welcome back to the East Yorkshire coast folks! This is the parish of Mappleton which sits 3 miles to the South of Hornsea. As well as Mappleton village the parish includes the hamlets of Rolston, Cowden and Great Cowden, and it all overlooks the North Sea on the fastest eroding cliff in the whole of Europe.

In 1991, sea defences were built in order to protect the village and the B1242 which is the main road through Mappleton. Before that, intense sea erosion that had threatened to swallow up not just the cliff, but also the village itself. Although it’s still eroding away, it’s now slowed to a point where it is no longer a threat to the settlement. The success of the project created a larger higher sandy beach for Mappleton.

Locals and tourists alike can now enjoy the fabulous Mappleton Beach, a popular local attraction at the bottom of the cliff, which has a free car park at the top. You do have to have your wits about you on Mappleton Beach. Coastal erosion often reveals lots of explosive material thanks to a former RAF bombing range located down the coast at Cowden.

As well as the beach, the village itself offers a lot for such a small place. Here you can enjoy the old post office tea rooms and the fabulous Grade II listed church. Mappleton is also one of the best places to visit to see some of the UK’s coastal wartime defences.

So get your Speedos on, it’s time for a paddle in the sea!

We love York and Yorkshire! ????

York is a historic City nestled in North Yorkshire, packed full of incredible local tourist spots, and an easy two hours by train from Leeds, Manchester and Edinburgh.

Voted as Britain's best place to live by the Sunday Times, it's one of the most popular tourist destinations.

Plan a day of culture, history, shopping or simply an enchanting day to get lost in the winding and cobbled snickelways and streets.

York has an outstanding park and ride system meaning a double bonus of no stress driving and a pedestrianised city centre.

This is no ordinary city centre, home to York Minster, the largest of its kind in Europe, York's treasured stone masterpiece which will literally take your breath away.

With the protective walls proudly encasing the city, the modern and the old work together in perfect synergy as visitors enjoy walking around the town centre and soaking up the past, admiring great architecture and dining in excellent restaurants and traditional pubs.

Our places to stay are the perfect retreat at the end of a busy day.

Best things to do in York

York offers an abundance of places to visit, it's a city that breathes animated history, and you will want to know more and more the longer you stay here.

Firstly, you cannot miss the glorious Minster with its elegant presence, with its criss-cross purposeful footsteps walking past it from morning to dusk.

If you enjoy walking as much as scenic views, the York city walls envelope the city in a protective embrace. They originate from Roman times and make York to be Britain's most complete historic wall. You can walk its full length or choose one or two sections if your legs need warming up.

Located in the city centre itself is the famous Shambles street, the preserved Elizabethan buildings blinking like eyelids onto the passing tourists down below. Once a street for butchers, it is now a street peppered with beautiful jewellery stores, chocolate shops and various magical stores.

These are just a few of the wonders in store waiting for you, not to mention a plethora of churches, Clifford's tower, the Merchant Adventurers' Hall and more.

York's biggest attractions, shops and award winning restaurants await...

FULFORD: York Parish #19 of 31

YORK PARISH #19: FULFORD

It took me quite a long time to write the script for this one given how much Fulford has to its name. Located two miles to the south of York City Centre, on the eastern bank of the River Ouse, the ancient parish of Fulford consisted of two townships. In the North was Gate Fulford which was also known as Over Fulford and in the South, Water Fulford which was also known as Nether Fulford.

From the two townships the parish took the name of Fulfords Ambo in the 19th century. The two townships became separate civil parishes in 1866. In 1900, Gate Fulford was abolished and absorbed into the city of York and Water Fulford became what we know as Fulford parish today.

The biggest historical happening in this part of York came in 1066, when its lands were bloodied thanks to a brutal battle, a precursor to Battle of Stamford Bridge. The Battle of Fulford was won by the invading Vikings, and the site of the skirmish will feature in this episode. Also featured here is the site of the former Naburn Hospital, and this place has a few notable sporting facts too. Former England football manager Steve McLaren was born here, and York City once played here as well

Come with me and lets see what else we can find!

QUIENES SOMOS
